The Cowboys won a dozen games last season, finishing first in the NFC East. They were 6-0 straight up against Philly, New York and Washington, but repeating that this season seems like a tough ask. All three of their division rivals have made moves in the off-season that should see them improve.
Washington picked up Carson Wentz, the Giants had a pair of high picks in the first round of the draft, and the Eagles are projected to have the best offensive line in the league. The Cowboys were are always a fan favorite, and last season they rewarded bettors with the best ATS record in the NFL going 13-5 against the number.
The 2nd Highest Paid Offense
Only the Detroit Lions are paying more ($123 Million) to their offense in 2022 than the Cowboys ($122 Million). Perhaps the Cowboys are getting better value for their money, as they did lead the league in scoring in 2021, and finished 2nd in passing averaging 282 yards per game.
Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott stayed healthy, and both players bounced back from a tough 2020 season. The Cowboys have had one of the best offensive lines in football over the last decade, and that hasn’t changed in 2022. The only question mark heading into this season is: ‘who is going to step up to replace Amari Cooper?”.
Mike McCarthy
The Mike McCarthy era got off to a rocky start in Dallas, going 6-10 and finishing third in the division in 2020. Of Course expectations were low after Dak Prescott went down in just the fifth game of the season. Winning the NFC East and making the playoffs last year was certainly a step in the right direction, but the early exit in the playoffs raised some of the same old questions that were asked of Jason Garrett.
Poor clock management, questionable decision making and overall predictable and conservative play calls may have been to blame for the loss to San Francisco. McCarthy has been known to struggle with clock management throughout his career.
Always Overrated
When they call you “America’s Team”, and you come into every season mentioned as a Super Bowl contender despite only four winning seasons over the last 12 years, you might be overrated. The fact that they not only won the division last year, but also had the best ATS record in the NFL is going to influence bettors as well as bookmakers.
Projected Record: 9-8 overall
