Washington won seven games in 2021, and they went 7-9-1 ATS. While they failed to live up to expectations, the fact that they won seven games and kept quarterback Taylor Heinicke upright for an entire season was a considerable achievement.
Unfortunately for Washington, seven wins wasn’t enough to clinch the NFC East for a second consecutive season. Bettors were high on Washington last season, and the early money suggests they are backing the Commanders again in 2022.
Carson Wentz
Tayor Heinicke threw for 3,419 yards with 20 TDs and 15 INTs on 65 percent passing last year. He played just well enough to give them a chance to win games, but not well enough to push them out of mediocrity. He wasn’t really the problem, but he also wasn’t the answer.
The Colts decided that Carson Wentz wasn’t the answer for them, so they shipped him to Washington. You can argue that Wentz is an upgrade, but the numbers don’t really suggest that he was significantly better than Heinicke last season.
He threw for roughly the same amount of yards, with a slightly lower completion percentage. He will step behind an inferior offensive line, with a team that is significantly less talented than the Colts. He won’t have the luxury of handing off to the league’s leading rusher. I am not convinced that Wentz can be a difference maker on a below average team.
Soft Schedule
According to the data, the Commanders will have the easiest schedule in the NFL in 2022. They get a break in their season opener facing the Jacksonville Jaguars at home. Games against the Lions, Bears, Giants, Texans and Falcons all before the Bye Week appear to be possible wins.
Of course you can’t count your chickens before they hatch, and even though the NFC East has been the laughing stock of the league in recent seasons, we are expecting the Giants and the Eagles to be significantly better in 2022. Dallas is still the favorite to win the division, and the Commanders have to face the Cowboys twice.
Leadership Issues
Few organizations in professional sports have been as chaotic as the Washington Football Team. Team owner Daniel Snyder and the entire organization remain embroiled in multiple ongoing investigations into the Commanders practices and day-to-day operations. Congress is probing allegations of a toxic workplace environment, and there is speculation that Snyder will be removed as the team owner.
Committee chair Carolyn Maloney (D-New York) seems to be serious about holding Snyder accountable: “The NFL is unwilling or unable to hold Mr. Snyder accountable,” Maloney said. “That is why I am announcing now my intent to issue a subpoena for Mr. Snyder for a deposition next week. The committee will not be deterred in its investigation into the Washington Commanders.”
