PREVIEW: The San Jose State Spartans will host the Portland State Vikings in a non-conference game in Week 2. The Spartans are coming off a blowout loss in Week 1, falling 45-10 to Tulsa. Senior quarterback Kenny Potter connected on just 16-of-28 pass attempts, throwing for 234 yards and a touchdown along with one interception. He might find life a little easier against the defense of Portland State. The Vikings allowed Central Washington’s quarterback Justin Lane to throw for 321 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort last week. San Jose State has been a good bet when coming off a loss, covering the spread in each of their last four such situations. The Spartans have failed to reach the total in each of their last four non-conference games, but they’ve gone over in seven straight home games against teams that are above .500. The Vikings have made bettors money when playing on the road, covering the spread in four of their last five away from Portland. In order to be successful here in San Jose, they will need to be effective running the football. They ran for 286 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-26 win over Central Washington last Saturday.
