Vancouver has five fewer road wins than Arizona has at home, and when you consider that several of Vancouver's wins and several of Arizona's losses came in games decided by one goal, the puckline looks good even at a high price. The Canucks are 4-11 in their last 15 road games, while the Coyotes have won four straight at home." This is a 10* play on Seattle. The Kraken have lost three straight on home ice, but they head out on the road where they have actually have a much better record. In fact Seattle has a Western Conference best 21 wins on the road, and the San Jose Sharks have the worst home record in the entire NHL. San Jose has just a half dozen home wins, the only team in the league that doesn't have 10+ wins on home ice. The Sharks are 13-41 in their last 54 home games. This is a big game for Seattle as they need to snap out of a slump to stay in a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Sharks on the other hand are polishing their golf clubs. GL, Jesse Schule

This is a 10* play on MIN. The Wild are coming off a 5-4 loss at Arizona on Sunday, and they have had a few days to prepare for tonight's game in St. Louis. Backup goaltender Filip Gustavsson allowed five goal on 23 shots in the loss. We will see Marc Andre Fluery back between the pipes tonight, and he's 3-0 with a 1.68 GAA so far in March. The Wild are 10-3 in their last 13 overall, and they have won four of their last five road games. The Blues are just 3-9 in their last 12 overall, and they are 1-5 in their last six home games. The Panthers probably have a far better chance of clinching a playoff spot, and the Predators intentions look pretty clear as they dealt a bunch of their top players at the trade deadline. They come into tonight's game against LA as losers of five of their last six, but they have won four of their last five versus LA. This is a tough spot for the Kings who are the end of a long road trip. The Kings have lost seven of their last 10 versus teams with a winning record, and they are 3-8 in their last 11 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. These two teams are obviously trending in opposite directions, as Vancouver is coming off back to back 5-1 home losses, and the Canucks are rumored to be shopping team captain Bo Horvat and star defenseman Quinn Hughes. The Kraken are coming off back to back home wins, but they actually have a better road record than they do at home. Keep in mind that Tampa was down 0-2 to the Rangers in the East Finals, and went on to win four straight. Andrei Vasilevskij allowed just three goals in the final three games of that series. I said this prior to Game 4: "The Leafs looked like the best team in the NHL in Game 3, but I am not ready to discount two decades of playoff futility after just 60 minutes of hockey. The Lightning are defending champions two years running, with a Vezina winner and Conn Smythe winner in goal. It would be naive not to expect some push back from the Lightning in Game 4." Tampa went on to win Game 4 by a score of 7-3. Tampa appeared to be in the driver's seat in Game 5 in Toronto, leading 2-0 after the first period. They made some big moves at the trade deadline, adding a veteran netminder with three Stanley Cup rings and a Vezina Trophy. Fleury is 9-2 with a 2.74 GAA since joining the Wild. While Minnesota has a proven playoff performer, the Blues turn to Ville Husso, who had an outstanding regular season. The 27 year old lacks Playoff experience. The Blues are 0-6 in their last six playoff games as an underdog, and the Wild are 51-16 in their last 67 home games. GL, Jesse Schule

It was just three years ago that the St. Louis Blues replaced head coach Mike Yeo, and went from last place to first place and on to win the Stanley Cup. We've seen Bruce Boudreau inspire the Vancouver Canucks to a record of 20-8-4, putting them back in the hunt for the playoffs. Montreal has also turned things around with seven wins in their last nine games under new head coach Martin St. Louis. The Flames are 10-1 in their last 11 home games, while the Wild have lost four of their last five on the road. The Islanders are 4-10 in the last 14 meetings in Tampa Bay, and the Lightning are 47-19 in their last 66 home games. The officiating has been well below average in the 2021 playoffs, and the missed call favored the home team in Game 6. Nikita Kucherov suffered a serious injury from a crosscheck that went unpunished. As much as the Bolts will miss Kucherov, they have plenty of depth on offense. A convincing win for Montreal was overshadowed by an injury to rookie Jake Evans, which resulted in a suspension for Mark Scheifele. The Jets could have a hard time replacing their leading scorer. The Jets are 0-6 in their last six playoff games as a favorite, while the Habs have won four straight as an underdog. I think the bookmakers have the wrong team favored here in Game 2." Michael Hutchison is the third string goalie, a 30 year old veteran with experience playing for Toronto and Columbus. His play has turned this series on it's head, and now the Stars are on the ropes. This is a 10* play on TB. The Lightning fell behind by a score of 3-0 early in Game 1, and then they dominated the rest of the game. Their rally fell short, losing by a score of 3-2. History favors the Lightning, as the Bruins are 3-11 in the last 14 meetings. "When you shrink the game to 40 minutes, it's going to be tough on you," coach Jon Cooper said. "I liked a lot of the way our game progressed, but if we're not going to manage the puck the way we did for much of the Columbus series, it'll be tough for us. You can't start games the way we did. It put us on our heels and shortened the game." These teams met in the playoffs two years ago, and Boston won Game 1 of that series. They are coming off back to back shutout wins over Dallas in a home and home series. The Habs have lost back to back games by a combined score of 8-1 in Florida versus the Panthers and the Lightning. It won't come easy in Winnipeg, where the Jets have won three straight. The Sabres are 5-13 in the last 18 meetings in Winnipeg, and they have lost six of their last seven versus Western Conference teams. This is a must win game for the Jets who are involved in a crowded race for the final playoff spot in the West. They beat the league worst Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Tuesday, and Corey Schneider picked up his first win of the season. Schneider is now 1-6-1 with a 4.61 GAA in eight starts, and any confidence gained would be lost if he lets in an early goal in his next start. This sets up for a let down spot for the Devils as they travel across the country for a very meaningless game against the Sharks. For San Jose they are looking to snap a four game losing skid, and team leader Logan Couture will be playing in his second game back since recovering from an ankle injury. This is a 10* play on the Edmonton Oilers. The Kings have lost two of three since trading their leading scorer to the Vancouver Canucks. Tonight they will play their second game of a back to back at home against the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton has gone 3-2-1 without their leading scorer Connor McDavid, but he is expected to return to the lineup soon. The Oilers are just three points back of division leaders Las Vegas, but they are only three points up on ninth place Nashville. They find themselves (like most teams in the Western Conference) on the playoff bubble. With Crosby nearing a return, the Pens have been dealt a cruel blow. Leading scorer Jake Guentzel will be done for the season after suffering a shoulder injury at the end of December. The Penguins have since lost two of three games. Vegas is looking for a fifth consecutive home victory, and they are 14-7-3 overall at home this season. I like the enthusiasm they bring. They've got to keep working at it so it becomes who we are, it becomes second nature." So far in 2019 they are 3-0, and they rank 4th in the NHL in scoring averaging 4.33 goals per game. They host Arizona tonight, and the Coyotes have lost two of three games so far. This is a 10* play on the Las Vegas Golden Knights. This is the mother of all revenge spots for Vegas, after they were eliminated from the playoffs in a Game 7 versus the Sharks last year. Leading 3-0 in the third period, it looked like the Sharks would be eliminated. San Jose was gifted a 5-minute power-play after Joe Pavelski suffered a serious injury in what replays showed was a fall after light contact, and San Jose scored four times to take the lead. They went on to win by a score of 5-4 in overtime. "It's so disappointing," Marchessault said afterward. "It's a joke. That's what it is. It's embarrassing." Vegas will have a chance to get a little revenge in their season opener on home ice. Joe Pavelski is now playing in Dallas, and Evander Kane is serving a suspension for contact with an official. This is a 10* play on St. Louis. Boston faces elimination tonight, and with all the injuries on the back end I don't like their chances of stopping the Blues. Here is what I said prior to Gsme 5: "The Blues took advantage of Boston's banged up blueline in Game 4, and they have now out-shot the Bruins in three of the four games in these Finals. Boston could be without team captain Zedno Chara for Game 5, and that could make life difficult for Tukka Rask." This is a 10* play on the St. Louis Blues. The Blues head home with the series tied 1-1, and their Game 2 win came in overtime by a score of 3-2. As much as it looks like there isn't much separation between these two teams, the fact is that St. Louis had dominated so far. They opened up a 2-0 lead in Game 1, and after outplaying the Bruins through two periods they came out a little flat in the third. They have been punishing the Bruins with their physical play, and it's taken it's toll. Boston has lost a key defenseman, and Patrice Bergeron appears to be suffering from a groin injury. This is a 10* play on Dallas. I took Dallas to win this series, and they look good heading home with a split after two games in St. Louis. The Blues beat the Winnipeg Jets in the first round mostly as a result of Jordan Binnington out-playing Connor Hellebuck. They face the Dallas Stars in the second round, and I don't think they can count on superior goaltending in this series. Ben Bishop ranked 1st in the NHL in save percentage and second in GAA during the regular season. Here in the playoffs he ranks second in both categories behind Robyn Lehner of the Islanders. The Stars top line has also been hot, and I think Dallas matches up really well versus this Blues team. Take DAL. GL, Jesse Schule

This is a 10* play on the Colorado Avalanche. I bet on Colorado to win this series, and heading home with a split after two games in San Jose, I love the Avs in Game 3 in Denver. Here is what I said prior to Game 1: "The Sharks are the better team on paper, but you have to think the seven game series versus Vegas took it's toll on this team. Martin Jones had a a few good games, but more often than not he was terrible. Joe Pavelski is hurt, and you can bet that the bench is full of veteran players that are playing hurt. Colorado is younger, faster, and very talented. They have the more consistent goaltending with Philip Grubauer. I'll take the Avs." The older Sharks appear to have run out of gas, and they are really struggling to match the speed and intensity of the younger Avalanche. Take COL. GL, Jesse Schule

The Blue Jackets showed the Tampa Bay Lightning that playoff hockey is a whole different ball game than the regular season. Their strategy worked perfect against the talented lightning, but they better go back to the drawing board. If they think they are going to out-work, and push around the big bad Bruins, they are kidding themselves. This Boston team is battle tested, with legendary playoff performers such as Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and Zedno Chara. Take BOS. GL, Jesse Schule

It might be a stretch to say that Dallas has the better goaltender, but Ben Bishop has better numbers. He led the NHL with a .934 save percentage, and his GAA of 1.98 was second to only Jordan Binnington, who started 15 fewer games. The Stars have arguably more high end talent on their top line with Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Alelander Radulov. This series isn't likely to be easy for Nashville." This is a 10* play on the Washington Capitals. The first thing I look at in any best of seven series is the goaltending. If I am going to consider the underdog, they damn well have the better goaltender. Now Petr Mrazek has had a fine season, going 23-14-3 with a 2.39 GAA. Do you remember that time Mrazek stole a series for his team in the playoffs? No, neither do I. But I do remember Braden Holtby stealing plenty of games for Washington during last year's Stanley Cup run. The Caps have the better goaltender and the best pure goal scorer of his generation (Alex Ovechkin). At this price it's not at all tempting to bet against the champs. Take WAS. GL, Jesse Schule

They have a game in hand, which allows them to occupy the final Wild Card spot in the West. They host Carolina tonight, and the Canes are just two points ahead in the standings. The Blue Jackets picked up Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel from Ottawa at the trade deadline, and after a slow start, both players scored in the win over Boston. Alex Ovechkin is the best pure goal scorer of his generation, but he and the Capitals have played second fiddle to Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins for the last decade. Washington's path to the Finals is far more impressive than the Knight's in my opinion. They overcame a 2-0 series deficit in the first round, and then won consecutive Game 7s against the defending champion Penguins and a Lightning team that finished first in the East. That brings me back to my description of Vegas as a "Cinderella Story". You know what happens to Cinderella when the clock strikes midnight? Goaltending has been an issue for Washington lately, with starter Braden Holtby losing four of his last five starts, giving up 16 goals in those games. They rank 29th in the NHL in goals scored, and they are brutal on special teams. The Devils are battling for a playoff spot in the East, currently holding a Wild Card spot. New Jersey comes into tonight's home game against Montreal off three straight losses, but this looks like an ideal spot for the Devils to get back on track. While they have lost five of their last seven overall, they were without starting goaltender Corey Schneider in six of those games. Schneider returned to action on Sunday, allowing three goals on 27 shots in a 3-2 loss to the Las Vegas Golden Knights. This game might have a bit of a revenge angle, as one of the Penguins few home losses this season came against Toronto back in December. The Leafs have lost eight of their last 11 visits to Steel Town though, and they face a red hot goaltender here tonight. Matt Murray is 14-4-1 at home this season, and he's 5-0-1 in his last six starts overall. He stopped 35 of 36 shots in a 4-1 win over Toronto the last time he faced them. LA has won three of it's last four overall, and Darcy Kuemper was between the pipes in all three of those wins. With just one regulation loss in 15 appearances, I see no reason why the Kings won't ride the hot hand here tonight. The Oilers are one of the worst defensive teams in the league, and the absolute worst on special teams. Their power play ranks 30th, and their penalty kill ranks dead last. The Oilers have lost five straight at LA, and going back even further they are just 3-13 in their last 16 visits to LA LA Land. They are 19-7-1 in Steel Town, and no team in the league has more home wins. Former Penguins goaltender Marc Andre Fleury will try no to let his emotions get the best of him in his first game back in Pittsburgh. "You always want to win, but I don't want to block everything out either," Fleury said. "It's going to be a special moment for me, playing the first game back here. Their last game was a road win at Las Vegas, beating the top team in the NHL by a score of 2-1. The Isles can certainly put the puck in the net, ranking second in the NHL in scoring averaging 3.4 goals per game. Florida comes in as losers of three straight, and seven of their last nine overall. They have lost seven of their last eight road games against teams with a winning record, and they are 10-25 in their last 35 road games. With both their top two goaltenders battling injury, 28 year old third string netminder Harri Sateri has lost three straight starts, surrendering a whopping 14 goals in those games. The former MVP and Vezina Trophy winner has pedestrian numbers this season, going 10-10-2 with a 3.09 GAA. He allowed three goals on 37 shots in a 3-2 home loss to Calgary earlier this month. The Flames are coming off back to back wins over Vancouver and St. Louis, and they out-scored the opposition 8-2 in those games. The Habs have lost eight of their last 10 at Calgary, and the Flames have won 11 of the last 16 meetings overall in this series. Montreal has lost seven of it's last eight versus Western Conference teams, and there are rumors of teammates fighting each other during practice during the week. They haven't had much success in recent trips to the Music City, losing three straight and six of their last seven at Nashville. Pekka Rinne is expected to start for the Preds, and he's 10-1 with a 2.52 GAA on home ice this season. The Predators should have a big advantage on special teams. Boston is excellent on the penalty kill, but below average on the power-play. The Preds rank in the Top 10 in both categories, and they have the league's third best power play converting on almost 27 percent of their opportunities." The Knights are 11-2 at home, and they have a favorable matchup in tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. This will be the third game in four nights, and second game of a back to back for Carolina. They have lost six straight road games, and they wrap up this current road trip on Friday in Buffalo. This game will have added significance for the home team, as they welcome back starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who hasn't played since October. The veteran and three time Stanley Cup champion won his first three starts of the season before suffering a concussion in a loss to Detroit. The Canes have alternated goaltenders and should go with Cam Ward after Scott Darling took his fifth consecutive loss last night in Anaheim. Ward was lit up for five goals in a loss at San Jose in his last start. Already without Ryan Kesler, Ryan Getzlaf and Patrick Eaves, leading scorer Rickard Rakell is now sidelined indefinitely with an upper body injury. The Ducks rank 27th in the league in scoring, and they face a Chicago team that has been very solid defensively. Chicago has scored 14 goals while winning three of it's last four overall. "I think we're starting to settle in as a team," said captain Jonathan Toews. "We're starting to see what it takes for us to be a good team and what it's going to take to win games the rest of the season (with) how tight our conference and division (are)." Chicago's starting goaltender Corey Crawford is 12-6-2 with a 1.92 GAA and .930 save percentage in 21 career games against Anaheim. Here is what I said about the Golden Knights before there were blown out in an 8-2 loss at Edmonton: "The Las Vegas Golden Knights shocked the hockey world by winning eight of their first nine games. That had never been done before by an expansion team, but the Knights were fortunate to have a pretty solid roster in their first season. Perhaps their most valuable asset is their starting goaltender Marc Andre Fleury, a veteran with multiple Stanley Cup rings as a starter with the Pittsburgh Penguins. When Fleury went out with an injury, backup Malcom Subban won back-to-back starts. When he went down with an injury, third stringer Oscar Dansk won three straight. Dansk was also lost to injury, leaving the Knights with their fourth string goaltender Maxime Lagace. It's perhaps no surprise that they have lost five of their last seven games, and Lagace's 3.58 GAA ranks 37th in the league." Lagace allowed just two goals on 29 shots in a home win over LA his last time out, but he's 2-5 with a 4.12 GAA in seven starts on the road. The Ducks have won three straight, and starter John Gibson stopped 50 shots in a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers in his last start. Anaheim is getting healthier, welcoming back defenseman Cam Fowler who played over 23 minutes in Monday's win over the Sharks. Fowler had missed the past month with a leg injury, and his return should help the power-play that ranks just 22nd in the league. This is a 10* play on the Nashville Predators. I had the Preds in a 5-2 home win over Colorado on Saturday, and here is what I said prior to the opening faceoff: "The Predators have been one of the best home teams in the NHL in recent seasons, and not much has changed in that department this year. Nashville is 5-1 at home, and starting goaltender Pekka Rinne is 5-0-1 with a 2.61 GAA and a .908 save percentage in six home starts." Rinne stopped 29-of-31 shots in the victory, as Colorado scored twice in the final five minutes in a game that Nashville led 5-0 halfway through the third period. The Jets are flying high, coming into tonight's game with the second best record in the Central Division. It's quite the turnaround for a team that missed the playoffs last year. While Winnipeg is surely improved, I am skeptical about the Jets hot start. Their last six wins have come against teams that also missed the playoffs last season. They have always had a tough time winning games in Nashville, losing nine of their last 12 at Bridgeston Arena. San Jose has won four of their last five home games, and the one loss during that span came to the league leading Lightning. The Bruins are also expected to rest starting goaltender Tuukka Rask tonight, allowing him to be fresh for tomorrow night's game in Boston. The Bruins have just one win in five road games this season, and they are 1-5 in their last six versus the Leafs. Toronto swept the season series last year, winning both home games by a combined score of 8-3. The Detroit Red Wings on the other hand missed the playoffs for the first time in 25 years, and they are a team that is still in a rebuilding mode. Calgary is coming to the end of a seven game home-stand, and has won three of five games. Mike Smith started all five of those games, and the veteran netminder was on top of his game, posting a .913 save percentage. Detroit is at the end of a long road trip, during a stretch where seven of their last eight games have been on the road. These teams played twice last year, and the Flames won both games by an identical 3-2 score. The Flames have had plenty of success against Eastern Conference teams, winning 12 of their last 16. Steven Stamkos leads the league in points, and another Tampa player Nikita Kucherov leads the league in scoring with 12 goals in his first 12 games played. They scored eight goals in a blowout win over the Panthers, but then returned home to lose to the New York Rangers. The Blue Jackets are coming off a 7-3 win at Florida, but I don't like their chances of taking two points away from this game in Tampa. This is a 10* play on the Buffalo Sabres. It's been a disappointing start to the season for the Sabres, but they have a favorable matchup here at home against the Vancouver Canucks. Buffalo has played five of it's first seven games on the road, but return home to catch the Canucks playing their second game in as many nights. Injuries have taken their toll on Vancouver, with top defenseman Alex Edler and star winger Louie Eriksson both on the shelf. Their blue line could get even thinner, with Erik Gudbranson scheduled to have a hearing with the league to discuss a possible suspension Friday morning. It would be a huge loss for Vancouver, as Gudbranson is among the team leaders in ice time. The Canucks have lost five straight when playing a third game in three nights, and they are 2-5 in their last seven at Buffalo. The home team is 16-5-1 in the last 22 meetings between the two teams. This is a 10* play on the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers won all four meetings versus the Flames last season, out-scoring their Provincial rivals 21-11 in those games. These teams played twice in the pre-season, and Edmonton won both of those games as well. Edmonton finished last season with 104 points, good enough for second place in the Pacific Division. Team Captain Connor McDavid led the league in scoring, and at 20 years old, he's expected to be even better this season. One key to the Oilers success has been a Top 5 power play unit, and this is something that should prove to be a huge advantage early in the season. The league often gives officials a mandate to crack down on minor infractions early in the season, and the result is an increase in the overall number of penalties called. This is a 10* play on the Nashville Predators. The home team has won all five games in the Stanley Cup Finals so far, and I like the Predators chance of forcing a Game 7. Pekka Rinne was pulled after the first period of Game 5, but he's been dominant on home ice all season long. He held the Penguins to just two goals on 52 shots in two home games in this series, and he was 21-6 with a 2.23 GAA at home during the regular season. "He's the same every day," said Nashville's head coach Peter Laviolette. "He works hard every day. His demeanor seems the same to me. We've got to do a better job in front of him. I know there's things we can do that can support our goaltender better." Given that he's won nine of 10 home starts in these playoffs, I expect him to respond here in tonight's do or die Game 6. This is a 10* play on the Nashville Predators. Nashville had outplayed the Penguins for the majority of the first two games, but they were down 2-0 in the series heading into Game 3. They seized all the momentum in the series by blowing out the Penguins on home ice in Game 3. Here is what I said prior to the game: "Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals was one of the strangest hockey games we've seen in a while. The Predators played well, and looked like they had jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. The goal was overturned after a lengthy video review, despite what appeared to be inconclusive evidence. Then a controversial 5-3 power play led to the game's opening goal, and after a lucky bounce in the final 16 seconds of the first period, the Penguins were up 3-0. Pekka Rinne wasn't nearly as sharp as expected in Game 1, but perhaps a 37 minute stretch without facing a single shot was enough to throw him off his game. The Predators simply have to come into Game 2 focused on playing their game, trusting it will yield a different result." I expect Nashville to come out like gangbusters again here in Game 4, and with Rinne coming off a huge game, it's Murray who might be struggling with his confidence. Take NAS. GL, Jesse Schule
