The Giants were 4-13 in 2021, and they battled injuries all season long. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones missed the final six games, and running back Saquon Barkley missed time, and wasn’t effective when he was on the field. Barkley is set to become a free agent in 2023, and players have been known to have breakout seasons when they are playing for a contract.
Jones has been a turnover machine since entering the league, but his completion percentage has improved every year, and he threw a career low seven INTs in 2021. The Giants used a first round pick in the 2022 draft to select right tackle Evan Neal out of Alabama. An improved offensive line could go a long way in helping Jones limit the turnovers in 2022.
Soft Schedule
If you use a simple method of calculating last year’s records to determine strength of schedule for the upcoming season, there are only three teams who have an easier schedule than the Giants. The four easiest schedules belong to the four teams that make up the NFC East. Playing in the weakest division in the league allows plenty of opportunity for the Giants to improve on last season’s record.
Coaching Change
The Joe Judge era is over in New York, and former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll steps in at head coach with an impressive resume. While Mike Kafka is the Giants offensive coordinator, Daboll is sure to have his hands all over this offense. “There is a constant line of communication between Coach Daboll, Kafka, (quarterbacks coach) Shea (Tierney), me–I think all the quarterbacks,” Jones said at the team’s mandatory minicamp last week.”We’re always communicating what we like, what we don’t like, if we would rather do it out of a certain look or if there is a tweak we want to make.”
2022 NFL Draft
The #5 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft Kayvon Thibodeaux comes highly touted out of Oregon. He had been projected to go even higher, and the Giants were lucky to get him with their 5th pick. Playing opposite Azeez Ojulari the duo should terrorize opposing quarterbacks in the coming season. The Giants haven’t had a player with at least 12 sacks since 2014, but that is expected to change here in 2022.
Projected record: 8-9 Overall
