08-25-23 | Cubs -114 v. Pirates | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -114 | 7 h 28 m | Show |
On Friday, Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 3.83 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller (10-8, 4.22). Hendricks has gone 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA over his past three starts. On Sunday, he limited the Kansas City Royals to one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and one walk, en route to a 4-3 win. Keller might be rounding back into the early-season form that established him as Pittsburgh's ace. The All-Star lost five decisions in a row from July 3-Aug. 3. Since then, he had two no-decisions followed by a win his last time out, on Saturday at Minnesota. He has a 3.18 ERA over those three games. Against the Twins, he gave up two runs and seven hits while striking out 12 and walking one in six innings for his first win since June 28. He finished one strikeout shy of his career best. Keller is 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA in nine career games, eight of them starts, against the Cubs. He has not faced them this year.
08-25-23 | Astros v. Tigers OVER 8.5 | Top | 1-4 | Loss | -122 | 7 h 52 m | Show |
In his past three outings, Framber Valdez hasn't come close to recreating the magic of the no-hitter he threw on Aug. 1. Following that gem against the Cleveland Guardians, Valdez has allowed 16 runs, 15 earned, and five home runs while going 0-2 with a 6.86 ERA in three starts. Valdez (9-9, 3.55 ERA) has allowed at least four runs in six of his past seven starts, the lone exception being the no-hitter. During his latest outing, on Saturday against the Seattle Mariners, he surrendered six runs and 10 hits in five innings. Matt Manning (5-4, 4.31 ERA) has overcome a rough patch and produced two straight solid outings. He limited Boston to one unearned run over 5 1/3 innings on Aug. 12, then held Cleveland to two runs (one earned) in six innings on Saturday. Manning, who was the winning pitcher in both games, had yielded 19 runs, 17 earned, in his previous three outings. He settled in against the Guardians after serving up a first-inning homer to Kole Calhoun.
08-24-23 | Dodgers v. Guardians OVER 8.5 | Top | 9-3 | Win | 100 | 8 h 51 m | Show |
Ryan Pepiot (0-0, 1.80 ERA) of the Dodgers will face Gavin Williams (1-4, 3.02) of the Guardians in a battle of rookie right-handers during the regularly scheduled contest. Pepiot, 26, put his best foot forward after being added to the roster as the 27th man for the Saturday doubleheader against the Miami Marlins. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings in during a no-decision.
08-24-23 | Rockies v. Rays -1.5 | Top | 3-5 | Win | 100 | 4 h 29 m | Show |
The Rays did not announce a Thursday starter, but multiple reports stated right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 1.00 ERA) would serve as the opener of a bullpen game. He has made four starts among his 24 appearances this season and seven in his 227 career outings. Three of his four starts in 2023 consisted of two scoreless innings. In the other start, Armstrong went a season-high three innings and didn't yield a run against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. He pitched one shutout inning in the series opener on Tuesday. Colorado's Peter Lambert will make the start in Florida before the club stays in the AL East and heads to Baltimore for a series beginning Friday. The right-handed Lambert (3-4, 5.02) will be seeking to follow up his last start, an outstanding seven-inning stint in a 14-1 win over the White Sox.
08-23-23 | Reds -110 v. Angels | Top | 7-3 | Win | 100 | 12 h 20 m | Show |
The Reds will go with with their most consistent pitcher this season, rookie Andrew Abbott (8-3, 2.99 ERA). The left-hander allowed six hits and two runs over five innings in his most recent start, a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 16. The Angels will give the ball to lefty Reid Detmers (3-9, 4.93 ERA) in the second game. On Aug. 16 at Texas, Detmers had the strongest outing of his season when he carried a no-hitter through 7 1/3 innings before Marcus Semien doubled.
08-23-23 | Twins v. Brewers -133 | Top | 7-8 | Win | 100 | 5 h 2 m | Show |
The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to ace right-hander Corbin Burnes to extend their winning streak when they host the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a two-game interleague series between division leaders. Burnes (9-6, 3.43 ERA) will be opposed by right-hander Kenta Maeda (3-7, 4.13). Milwaukee took the opener 7-3 on Tuesday night, bunching six singles for a five-run rally in the sixth inning. The Brewers, returning home after a 6-3 road trip, won their fourth straight to move a season-high 12 games above .500.
08-22-23 | Cardinals v. Pirates -130 | Top | 3-6 | Win | 100 | 7 h 51 m | Show |
On Tuesday, right-handers Adam Wainwright (3-8, 8.42 ERA) of St. Louis and Johan Oviedo (6-13, 4.55) of Pittsburgh are scheduled to start. Wainwright is coming off a quality start - three runs allowed in six innings Thursday against the New York Mets - on the heels of his shortest career start, when he lasted just one inning. In fact, he had given up 15 earned runs in four-plus innings over two outings before the Mets game. So the veteran, who is expected to retire at the end of the season, had a frank talk before his most recent outing -- with himself.
08-22-23 | Cubs v. Tigers +1.5 | Top | 6-8 | Win | 100 | 7 h 37 m | Show |
Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly has looked good this month in a relief role, but he will try to get back on track as a starter on Tuesday when Chicago faces the host Detroit Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game series. Smyly has tossed an inning of scoreless relief in each of his last three appearances. He'll be making his first start since Aug. 7, when he allowed seven runs in five innings against the New York Mets. Smyly (9-8, 4.92 ERA) began his career with Detroit. In three career starts against the Tigers, he is 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA. Smyly will be opposed by rookie right-hander Reese Olson (2-5, 4.83) on Tuesday. In his most recent outing last Wednesday, Olson lasted just 2 2/3 innings while giving up four runs and eight hits to Minnesota.
08-21-23 | Cardinals v. Pirates +1.5 | Top | 1-11 | Win | 100 | 7 h 16 m | Show |
The Pirates will look to get their offense going on Monday against left-hander Drew Rom, who is expected to be summoned from Triple-A Memphis to make his major league debut. Rom was the primary pitching prospect acquired from Baltimore in an Aug. 1 trade deadline deal that sent right-hander Jack Flaherty to the Orioles. In two starts at Memphis, Rom recorded a pair of victories, allowing just two runs (one earned) in 11 innings -- good for an 0.82 ERA. He also made 19 appearances (18 starts) for Triple-A Norfolk this season while in the Orioles' organization. During his time there, Rom went 7-6 with a 5.34 ERA.
08-21-23 | Cubs -1.5 v. Tigers | Top | 7-6 | Loss | -100 | 7 h 59 m | Show |
Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo (2-4, 5.16 ERA) will start the series opener. His WHIP (0.99) is a lot more impressive than his ERA, thanks to his last three outings. He has had a pair of scoreless, one-hit performances, first against San Diego over six innings on July 23 and most recently in a five-inning stint against the Twins on Tuesday. Former reliever Javier Assad (2-2, 3.11), Faedo's mound opponent, has posted two quality starts this month. He held Toronto to one run and four hits in seven innings on Aug. 11. In his last outing on Wednesday, the Cubs right-hander gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox.
08-20-23 | Pirates v. Twins -127 | Top | 0-2 | Win | 100 | 3 h 41 m | Show |
The Minnesota Twins will turn to left-hander Dallas Keuchel in the rubber match of their three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. It will be just the third start of the season for the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner, who signed a minor league contract with the Twins on June 22. Keuchel (0-1, 9.45 ERA) was solid in his first start, a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 6 at Target Field. He allowed one run on eight hits over five innings. Ryan Borucki (1-0, 4.07) will make his second start of the season on Sunday. Borucki is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA in five career games (one start) against the Twins. He allowed one run on one hit in one inning of relief in Friday's 5-1 series opening loss.
08-20-23 | Red Sox v. Yankees -103 | Top | 6-5 | Loss | -103 | 2 h 20 m | Show |
New York's Clarke Schmidt (8-7, 4.76 ERA) will attempt to rebound from a loss after allowing a career-worst eight runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings during Monday's 11-3 loss at Atlanta. Before his rough start against the Braves, Schmidt had allowed three runs or less in 15 straight starts dating to May 19. Schmidt is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA in six career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox. He started against Boston in consecutive outings on June 11 and 18 when he allowed a combined three runs on nine hits in 10 innings. Fellow right-hander Josh Winckowski (3-1, 3.20) will serve as the opener for the first time before Nick Pivetta follows as a bulk reliever. Pivetta is 4-3 with a 5.88 ERA in 11 starts and 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA in 18 relief appearances this season. He is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 11 career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. Pivetta is 1-0 and has yet to allow a run in three relief appearances spanning 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees this year
08-19-23 | Marlins v. Dodgers UNDER 9.5 | Top | 1-3 | Win | 100 | 5 h 36 m | Show |
Right-hander Eury Perez (5-4, 3.19 ERA) and left-hander Braxton Garrett (7-3, 3.91) will look to help Miami secure a more favorable position in the postseason chase. Perez will get the nod for Game 1 on Saturday, while Braxton is scheduled to start the nightcap. In his most recent outing, Perez escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on four hits in four innings against the New York Yankees on Sunday. The rookie has never faced Los Angeles. Garrett worked five scoreless innings against the Houston Astros on Monday, surrendering just four hits to earn the win. He has faced the Dodgers once in his career, allowing three runs on three hits in three innings of relief on May 15, 2021. Left-hander Caleb Ferguson (7-3, 2.38 ERA) is set to go up against Perez to begin the twin bill. Ferguson, who will be serving as an opener, has made 51 appearances this season, but only one was a start. In seven career appearances (zero starts) against the Marlins, Ferguson has never earned a decision while recording a 4.76 ERA. Fellow southpaw Julio Urias (10-6, 4.35 ERA) is expected to take the mound for Game 2 after permitting three runs on four hits in seven innings against the Rockies on Sunday. Urias matched his career high with 12 strikeouts against Colorado and has picked up three consecutive wins. He has also logged three quality starts over his past four outings, giving up six runs in 24 innings during that span, good for a 2.25 ERA.
08-19-23 | Royals v. Cubs -185 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 4 h 3 m | Show |
The Chicago Cubs are undefeated in five straight games with ace Justin Steele on the mound. Amid a tight postseason race, the host Cubs need that trend to continue while trying to avoid a second straight loss to the pesky Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Scoring hasn't been a problem in Steele's past five starts. The Cubs have totaled 45 runs during that stretch, as he has gone 4-0. However, the left-hander has yielded three earned runs in each of his last three starts. Steele (13-3, 2.79 ERA) has also failed to complete six innings in two consecutive outings. Most recently, in a no-decision on Aug. 12 at Toronto, he yielded six hits and struck out seven over five innings during Chicago's 5-4 victory. In his third big-league season, Steele ranked among the major league leaders in wins, ERA and WHIP (1.17), and he has already thrown a career-high 126 innings.
08-18-23 | Diamondbacks +155 v. Padres | Top | 0-4 | Loss | -100 | 10 h 7 m | Show |
Brandon Pfaadt is considered the Arizona Diamondbacks' No. 1 pitching prospect, but it hasn't been an easy season for the 24-year-old rookie. The 6-foot-4 right-hander is in his third tour with the Diamondbacks this year, and he is still looking for his first major league win after 11 starts. Pfaadt is 0-6 with a 6.91 ERA. However, if Pfaadt breaks through on Friday in a rematch against San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo, the Diamondbacks would have their first four-game winning streak since they won six straight games from June 6-12. The Padres have lost each of the last four games started by Lugo, the former Mets swingman who is 0-2 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.209 WHIP during that stretch. A large part of the problem is that Lugo has given up five homers in that span and at least one home run in six straight starts after allowing just six homers in his first 12 starts. The Padres are just 6-12 in Lugo's starts this year. Arizona is 5-6 when Pfaadt starts.
08-18-23 | Tigers v. Guardians OVER 7 | Top | 4-2 | Loss | -125 | 6 h 18 m | Show |
Detroit will send left-hander Tarik Skubal (2-2, 4.18 ERA) to the mound in Game 1. He allowed five runs (four earned) over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox last Friday. Skubal, 26, has posted a 36-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in seven starts this season since returning from flexor tendon surgery in his left elbow last August. Jose Ramirez is 5-for-14 against Skubal, who is 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA in six career starts versus Cleveland. The Guardians will counter with right-hander Gavin Williams (1-3, 2.80), who has recorded a total of 22 strikeouts over his last two starts covering 12 innings. The rookie allowed one run over five frames in a no-decision against the Tampa Bay Rays last Saturday.
08-17-23 | Mets v. Cardinals +118 | Top | 4-2 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 20 m | Show |
In his past two starts, Wainwright (3-7, 8.78 ERA) retired just 12 batters while allowing 15 runs on 18 hits. The Cardinals will start him Thursday against the visiting New York Mets in the opener of a four-game series. However, this is the last opportunity team management is promising him. The Mets will counter Wainwright with former Cardinals hurler Jose Quintana (0-4, 3.03 ERA), who will make his sixth start since recovering from rib surgery. He allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of five starts this season. Quintana is 5-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 12 career starts against the Cardinals.
08-17-23 | Red Sox v. Nationals +167 | Top | 7-10 | Win | 167 | 4 h 49 m | Show |
Chris Sale makes his second start since returning from the injured list when the Boston Red Sox meet the host Washington Nationals in the rubber game of their series on Thursday. Sale (5-2, 4.52 ERA), who had been out since early June because of a stress reaction in his shoulder, returned last Friday and allowed two runs on one hit -- a home run -- in 4 2/3 innings against the Tigers. He struck out seven without a walk and retired the first 14 Tigers he faced. The Nationals will counter with veteran left-hander Patrick Corbin (7-11, 4.85 ERA). Corbin allowed an unearned run on one hit and seven walks in five-plus innings during his last start, a no-decision against the Phillies last Thursday.
08-16-23 | Brewers +1.5 v. Dodgers | Top | 1-7 | Loss | -104 | 13 h 13 m | Show |
Wade Miley allowed one run on two hits and three walks in 6.0 innings as the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Colorado Rockies 7-3 on Tuesday. Miley struck out two, ending the game with a 2.90 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season.
08-16-23 | Diamondbacks v. Rockies UNDER 12.5 | Top | 9-7 | Loss | -110 | 6 h 18 m | Show |
It might help that the Rockies are sending a revitalized Austin Gomber (9-9, 5.33 ERA) to the mound in the finale while the Diamondbacks will counter with rookie Slade Cecconi (0-0, 2.84). Gomber has been Colorado's best pitcher since June 25, going 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA in nine starts. He took a road loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday despite allowing just two runs in five innings. He has been especially effective at home, where he has posted a 3.60 ERA in his past five starts -- tossing at least five innings in each of those outings. Part of Gomber's turnaround -- he was 0-4 with a 12.12 ERA in mid-April -- was acknowledging the weight of being a key piece in the Nolan Arenado trade in 2021 was impacting his performance. That proved cathartic for him.
08-15-23 | Phillies v. Blue Jays UNDER 8 | Top | 1-2 | Win | 100 | 6 h 14 m | Show |
Blue Jays hitters will be challenged Tuesday by Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler (9-5, 3.74 ERA). Wheeler held the Blue Jays to one run and three hits over seven innings May 10 but did not factor in the decision as the Phillies completed a two-game sweep at Philadelphia. In five career starts against Toronto, he is 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA. Toronto is scheduled to start left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (9-4, 3.53), who will be facing the Phillies for the first time. The Phillies completed a 6-4 homestand. losing 8-1 on Saturday and 3-0 on Sunday to the Twins in the final two games.
08-15-23 | Red Sox v. Nationals OVER 9 | Top | 5-4 | Push | 0 | 6 h 20 m | Show |
Washington's Josiah Gray (7-9, 3.69 ERA) is set to pitch the opener against Boston's Nick Pivetta (8-6, 4.16). Gray is 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA over his past two starts. In his most recent outing, Gray gave up four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Phillies. He left the game one batter after surrendering a two-run homer to Bryce Harper. Gray allowed one run over six innings of a no-decision in his only previous start against Boston in 2021. Pivetta will be making his third start in his last four appearances. In the previous two starts, he went 1-1 while allowing five runs on nine hits over 12 1/3 innings. He struck out 18 batters and walked two. Overall, Pivetta has been on an extended roll, compiling a 2.53 ERA over his past 14 outings while holding opponents to a .155 batting average.
08-14-23 | Rays v. Giants +1.5 | Top | 10-2 | Loss | -135 | 13 h 57 m | Show |

08-14-23 | A's v. Cardinals -199 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 100 | 11 h 6 m | Show |
Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.20 ERA) will continue his quest for a strong finish to the season when he draws the start Monday as the Cardinals host the Oakland Athletics to open a three-game series. Oakland will start left-hander JP Sears (2-9, 4.23) in the series opener. This will be his first career start against the Cardinals. Sears took a 6-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in his previous start after allowing four runs on nine hits in four innings. Before that start, he had surrendered two runs or fewer in four of his previous six outings.
08-13-23 | Braves v. Mets +118 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 118 | 19 h 30 m | Show |

He struck out eight and walked none for his second straight victory.
08-12-23 | Guardians v. Rays -146 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 100 | 6 h 41 m | Show |
Rookie right-hander Gavin Williams (1-3, 2.90 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Guardians. The 24-year-old aims to follow up a dominating effort. Williams struck out a season-best 12 and gave up one hit and one walk in seven innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. He received a no-decision. It marks the second time in nine big league starts that Williams gave up just one hit over seven shutout innings. The other was against the Kansas City Royals on June 27. He also received a no-decision in that outing. Right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 1.15) will serve as the Rays' opener for the fourth time this season. Tampa Bay was hoping to start right-hander Tyler Glasnow (back) but decided to push him back to Monday. Armstrong has allowed just 20 hits in 31 1/3 innings this season. He has struck out 34 and walked six. Armstrong, 32, is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in six career relief outings against Cleveland, a franchise he pitched for from 2015-17.
08-11-23 | Twins +170 v. Phillies | Top | 2-13 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 8 m | Show |

Sanchez has never faced the Twins. The struggling Twins will look to snap a three-game losing streak. After winning the opener of a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers, the Twins fell flat and dropped the final three, including a 3-0 loss on Thursday. Dallas Keuchel is scheduled to start for Minnesota. It will be Keuchel's second start since being signed to a minor league deal by the Twins. In his Twins debut last Sunday, he held the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to one run in five innings.
08-11-23 | Reds v. Pirates +1.5 | Top | 9-2 | Loss | -165 | 7 h 16 m | Show |
In the opener, Cincinnati left-hander Andrew Abbott (6-3, 2.93 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Johan Oviedo (6-11, 4.18). Abbott, who has not faced the Pirates, will be making his 12th major-league start in a strong rookie season. On Saturday against Washington, Abbott had one of his biggest hiccups. He took his first loss since July 15, allowing six runs, nine hits and a career-high five walks in 5 2/3 innings. Oviedo is on a roll. He is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA over his past three games, all quality starts. He also has been a boon to the bullpen - he has reached seven innings six times. That includes his last time out when he pitched seven shutout innings Sunday in a win at Milwaukee.

Syndergaard is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three career meetings (two starts) against Toronto.

Kremer, 27, has received a no-decision in each of his past four starts. He allowed two runs and two hits in 5 1/3 against the New York Mets on Friday in his last outing. Kremer tossed his only career shutout against the Astros when he allowed four hits on Sept. 23, 2022. Overall, he is 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in two career outings versus Houston, both coming last season. Right-hander Hunter Brown (8-7, 4.07) will be on the mound for Houston and aiming for a third straight victorious start. Brown gave up two runs and struck out four in six innings while beating both the Rays (July 29) and New York Yankees (last Friday) in his last two turns. He gave up four hits to the Rays and five versus the Yankees. Brown, 24, has never started against the Orioles. He pitched one scoreless inning of relief in Baltimore last Sept. 24, giving up three hits and striking out one.

The Phillies will hand the ball to right-hander Michael Lorenzen (6-7, 3.48 ERA) on Wednesday. Lorenzen, a former All-Star, was acquired by the Phillies before the trade deadline. In his debut with his new team, Lorenzen allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings in a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday. Left-hander MacKenzie Gore (6-8, 4.34) is expected to start for the Nationals. In Gore's last start, he gave up two runs on three hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Milwaukee Brewers last Wednesday.
08-09-23 | Rockies v. Brewers UNDER 9.5 | Top | 6-7 | Loss | -120 | 2 h 7 m | Show |
The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to right-hander Adrian Houser for the rubber game of their three-game series against the visiting Colorado Rockies on Wednesday afternoon. Coming off one of his best starts of the season, Houser (4-3, 4.19 ERA) will be opposed by right-hander Chris Flexen (1-5, 7.82). Houser picked up the win in his most recent start, allowing one run on four hits in six innings in a 14-1 victory over Pittsburgh last Thursday. Houser is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in four career starts against the Rockies. Flexen will be making his third start for the Rockies since being acquired off waivers from the Mets on July 13. In his last start, he got his first win with Colorado, giving up three runs on 10 hits over five innings in a 9-4 win over the Cardinals last Friday. Flexen began the season with Seattle, going 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA, before being traded to the Mets, who designated him for assignment the same day. Both teams were off on Monday, and on Tuesday, St. Louis sends Miles Mikolas (6-7, 4.29 ERA) to the mound, while Tampa Bay counters with Zach Eflin (12-6, 3.46). Mikolas was lined up to start on Sunday, but instead opted to drop his appeal on a five-game suspension levied by MLB after the right-hander intentionally plunked Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ with a pitch. With Mikolas not getting the starting nod against Colorado, the Cardinals used left-hander Zack Thompson (2-4) as an opener. Four relievers were used to close out the one-run loss, which made Monday's day off more beneficial to rest some arms. Mikolas is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in two career starts against Tampa Bay. In 14 innings, the veteran has yielded four home runs. Eflin is 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA in three starts (18 1/3 innings) against the Cardinals. At home, Eflin has been especially effective this season, posting a 10-2 record with a 2.60 ERA. However, in his last outing at Tropicana Field, the 29-year-old gave up five runs in four innings in a loss to the Miami Marlins on July 26. But in Eflin's last start, on the road at the New York Yankees, the right-hander tossed six shutout innings in a win.
08-08-23 | Nationals v. Phillies -1.5 | Top | 4-8 | Win | 100 | 13 h 40 m | Show |
Zack Wheeler (8-5, 3.71 ERA) and Ranger Suarez (2-5, 4.01) are scheduled to start in the doubleheader for the Phillies. Wheeler will pitch in the opener. Wheeler is 10-14 with a 4.66 ERA in 30 career starts against the Nationals, while Suarez is 6-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 13 career games (six starts) versus Washington. The surging Nationals have won four straight heading into this doubleheader. After a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last Wednesday, the Nationals swept the Cincinnati Reds, outscoring them 19-9 during the three-game set. Washington is also 11-5 over its last 16 games.

08-07-23 | Blue Jays v. Guardians UNDER 9 | Top | 3-1 | Win | 100 | 18 h 3 m | Show |
Gavin Williams fell to 1-3, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks in 5.0 innings, as the Cleveland Guardians lost to the Houston Astros 2-0 on Tuesday. Williams struck out six, ending the game with a 3.38 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season. That will be good enough to get us under in this one.
08-06-23 | White Sox v. Guardians OVER 9 | Top | 5-3 | Loss | -110 | 1 h 57 m | Show |
Jesse Scholtens, a 29-year-old rookie right-hander, is scheduled to start the series finale for the White Sox. Just three of his 17 appearances this season have come as a starter. Scholtens (1-4, 3.07 ERA) went six innings in his most recent appearance on Tuesday. He held the American League West-leading Texas Rangers to one run and three hits with six strikeouts and one walk, but took the loss in the 2-0 defeat. Cleveland plans to start Xzavion Curry, who has also been used predominantly in a relief role this season, making 25 of his 28 appearances out of the bullpen. Curry (3-1, 2.90) made his last start on July 28, holding the White Sox to one run and two hits in three innings, but the Guardians did not provide any run support, and he took the loss in the 3-0 defeat. Curry has made four appearances (one start) against the White Sox in his career and is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA.
08-05-23 | White Sox v. Guardians OVER 9 | Top | 7-4 | Win | 100 | 7 h 14 m | Show |
After having his Guardians debut cut short, right-hander Noah Syndergaard will look to fully display his talents on Saturday night when Cleveland faces the visiting Chicago White Sox in the second contest of a three-game series. Syndergaard (1-4, 6.68 ERA) struggled in his first 12 starts this season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before looking revitalized for Cleveland against the Houston Astros on Monday, allowing just one run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings. However, Syndergaard was forced to leave after just 68 pitches when he was hit in the leg by a line drive in the sixth. Right-hander Michael Kopech (4-10, 4.49) will attempt to help Chicago snap its skid when he makes his 21st start of the season on Saturday. Kopech also faced the Guardians in his most recent outing, taking a loss last Sunday after allowing three runs on four hits in five innings. Kopech again struggled to keep the ball in the park, giving up a pair of homers. He has surrendered a home run in each of his last six starts, going 1-5 with a 6.29 ERA during that span. In eight career appearances (four starts) against Cleveland, Kopech is 1-2 with a 3.51 ERA.
08-05-23 | Astros v. Yankees +126 | Top | 1-3 | Win | 126 | 1 h 20 m | Show |
A week ago, Justin Verlander was preparing for his first attempt at earning his 250th career win while still a member of the underachieving New York Mets. Verlander posted a 6-5 record and a 3.16 ERA for the Mets in the first year of a two-year, $86.7 million contract he signed in December after helping the Astros capture their second World Series title in team history. He joined a team that was coming off a 101-win season and was considered among the majors' preseason favorites. Verlander will be opposed by left-hander Nestor Cortes (5-2, 5.16 ERA), who is returning from a left rotator cuff strain for his first start since allowing two runs in five innings on May 30 in Seattle. Cortes initially hoped to miss just a few starts but wound up being transferred to the 60-day injured list. He allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings over two rehab starts for Double-A Somerset. "I've been on the shelf too long," Cortes said on Wednesday. "I want to come back and obviously show who I am and be back to the same form I was. So excited for this weekend." Cortes is 1-1 with an 8.04 ERA in six regular-season appearances (three starts) against Houston. He also faced them in Game 4 of last year's American League Championship Series but exited after two-plus innings with a groin injury.
08-04-23 | Astros v. Yankees +133 | Top | 7-3 | Loss | -100 | 5 h 54 m | Show |
After facing Shane McClanahan and Cristian Javier the previous two days, the Yankees will oppose Hunter Brown (7-7, 4.12 ERA), who leads AL rookies in innings (111 1/3) and strikeouts (126). Brown went 1-3 with a 5.92 ERA in five July outings and got the win on Saturday when he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings against Tampa Bay. Brown will be making his first career start against the Yankees. His only appearance against them was in a relief role when he walked two and got two outs in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the ALCS on Oct. 22. Luis Severino (2-5, 7.49 ERA) will attempt to rebound from another rough outing for the Yankees. Severino last pitched Sunday in Baltimore, where he allowed seven of his nine runs in the opening inning and tied a season high by yielding 10 hits. He was out after 3 1/3 innings. Severino had allowed four runs in 11 2/3 innings over his two previous starts, but Sunday marked the fourth time he allowed at least seven runs in his 12 starts this season. Severino is 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA in seven regular-season appearances (six starts) against the Astros. He last faced them in Game 2 of the ALCS at Houston on Oct. 20, when he allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings and took the loss.
08-04-23 | Rays -1.5 v. Tigers | Top | 8-0 | Win | 120 | 5 h 37 m | Show |
Zack Littell (1-2, 4.85 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Rays on Friday. The 27-year-old right-hander has been a reliever most of his career. He collected his first victory in eight career starts when he pitched five innings in an 8-2 win against Houston on Sunday. He gave up two runs and eight hits but didn't issue a walk. Tigers Rookie Reese Olson (1-4, 4.71) will start the series opener. Olson gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings last Friday in Miami but didn't figure into the decision in the 6-5 loss. He allowed the four runs during the first three innings.
08-03-23 | Diamondbacks v. Giants UNDER 9 | Top | 0-1 | Win | 100 | 4 h 4 m | Show |
The Diamondbacks hope for a reset when they send rookie Brandon Pfaadt to the mound to face the host San Francisco Giants in the finale of a four-game series on Thursday. Pfaadt (0-4, 8.20 ERA), a fifth-round pick by Arizona in 2020, aims for his first big-league victory as he starts for the ninth time this season. The 24-year-old right-hander went five innings on May 14 against the Giants in his third start, allowing only one run and one hit -- a home run by Michael Conforto. He threw 86 pitches, struck out five and walked three. The Giants are planning to go with a bullpen day on Thursday, with left-hander Scott Alexander (6-1, 3.13 ERA) serving as the opener. Alexander is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 22 career appearances (three starts) vs. the Diamondbacks, 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three outings, all in relief, this year. After a series-opening win, Arizona has dropped the past two games, scoring a total of five runs in the two contests to slide a game outside of an NL wild-card position.
08-03-23 | Orioles v. Blue Jays -1.5 | Top | 6-1 | Loss | -100 | 4 h 37 m | Show |
Right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his first start for the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon as they try to clinch their four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Baltimore obtained Flaherty before the trade deadline Tuesday from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for three prospects. The Orioles wanted his experience and innings-eating capability down the stretch to bolster a young staff as they try to hold on to first place in the American League East. Toronto's starter on Thursday will be right-hander Kevin Gausman (8-5, 3.10 ERA). Gausman pitched the first five-plus seasons of his 11-year career for the Orioles. In three career starts against them, he is 1-1 with a 4.76. Gausman threw eight innings of two-run ball against Baltimore in a no-decision on May 21.
08-02-23 | Angels +158 v. Braves | Top | 5-12 | Loss | -100 | 1 h 34 m | Show |
The pitching matchup for the series finale features a pair of right-handers, Atlanta's Yonny Chirinos (4-4, 4.34 ERA) vs. Los Angeles' Lucas Giolito (6-7, 3.85). Giolito will be making his 23rd start of the season and second for the Angels since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox on July 26. He took the loss in his club debut on Friday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays.
08-01-23 | Brewers -1.5 v. Nationals | Top | 6-4 | Win | 108 | 8 h 38 m | Show |
Right-hander Freddy Peralta (6-8, 4.46 ERA) will try to snap Milwaukee's losing streak. Peralta's last three starts have included two outings in which he tossed six shutout innings against the Reds sandwiched around a drubbing by the Braves in which he gave up six runs on six hits over five innings. Peralta, who matched his career high on Wednesday with 13 strikeouts against Cincinnati, is 2-2 with a 7.29 ERA in five career games (three starts) vs. Washington. The Nationals also were busy on the trade front Monday, sending veteran infielder Jeimer Candelario, 29, to the Chicago Cubs for a pair of minor-leaguers -- left-handed pitcher DJ Herz and shortstop Kevin Made. Right-hander Josiah Gray (7-8, 3.27 ERA) will start for Washington on Tuesday. Over his past two starts, Gray is 1-0 and has allowed a total of just one run on six hits and six walks over 13 innings. Gray has never faced the Brewers.
08-01-23 | Tigers +1.5 v. Pirates | Top | 1-4 | Loss | -185 | 7 h 26 m | Show |
In the series opener on Tuesday, Detroit's Matt Manning (3-2, 4.32 ERA) and Pittsburgh's Johan Oviedo (4-11, 4.60) are scheduled to start in a battle of right-handers. Oviedo is second to Pirates ace Mitch Keller with 10 quality starts, but those haven't translated to wins often enough. Oviedo snapped an eight-game losing skid after allowing one run on three hits in six innings Wednesday at San Diego.
07-31-23 | Orioles +1.5 v. Blue Jays | Top | 4-2 | Win | 100 | 9 h 16 m | Show |
The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Chris Bassitt (10-5, 3.91 ERA) on Monday. Over five career starts against the Orioles, Bassitt is 3-1 with a 4.55 ERA. The Orioles are scheduled to start right-hander Kyle Gibson (9-6, 4.68). Gibson is 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 12 career starts against Toronto. The Orioles have also made changes to their pitching staff. They selected the contract of right-hander Joey Krehbiel from Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday and optioned struggling right-hander Tyler Wells to Double-A Bowie. In his start against the Yankees on Saturday, Wells lasted only 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on home runs by Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge in the Orioles' 8-3 loss. It was the third straight start in which Wells did not complete five innings. In his past three starts, Wells has allowed 11 runs over nine innings.
07-31-23 | Brewers v. Nationals OVER 8.5 | Top | 3-5 | Loss | -115 | 9 h 24 m | Show |
Milwaukee ace Corbin Burnes (9-6, 3.46 ERA) will take the mound in the series opener. Over his last five starts, the right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.64 ERA. He has struck out 42 batters and walked 10 in 33 innings during that span. Last time out, Burnes took the loss despite allowing two runs on three hits over six innings against the Reds on Tuesday. Rookie right-hander Jake Irvin (3-5, 4.96) opens the series for Washington. Irvin has struggled as of late, going 1-0 with a 6.32 ERA over his past three starts. In his most recent outing, he gave up four runs on six hits in six innings of a no-decision against the visiting Rockies. He has never faced the Brewers. The Brewers placed right-hander Julio Teheran on the 15-day injured list on Sunday with a right hip impingement, a day after he allowed nine runs on 11 hits in five innings in an 11-5 loss to the Braves. Teheran has lost his last three decisions.
07-30-23 | Brewers v. Braves OVER 11 | Top | 6-8 | Win | 100 | 3 h 34 m | Show |
Colin Rea (5-4, 4.53 ERA) will start for Milwaukee on Sunday, looking to cool Atlanta's hot bats. Sunday will mark his first appearance opposite Atlanta since June 2016, when Rea started for the San Diego Padres, and just the right-hander's third time facing the Braves in his career. Rea is 1-0 against Atlanta, with an August 2015 win as a member of the San Diego Padres. He has a 3.55 ERA in his two career starts against Atlanta. Rea is 5-1 in his past six starts that have resulted in decisions, though he didn't factor into the decision in his last three starts. The most recent came July 24 against Cincinnati when he struck out five and allowed two runs -- both earned -- over six innings in a 3-2 Milwaukee win. AJ Smith-Shawver (1-0, 4.32 ERA) was a late announcement as Atlanta's Sunday starter. The rookie right-hander made four appearances for the Braves in June with three starts, the most recent of which came June 23 at Cincinnati. Smith-Shawver pitched 3 1/3 innings against the Reds and gave up five runs, all earned, in the outing. He most recently pitched for Triple-A Gwinnett on July 23. He picked up the win, allowing two hits and no runs with six strikeouts. Sunday will mark Smith-Shawver's first time pitching against Milwaukee.
07-30-23 | Angels +1.5 v. Blue Jays | Top | 3-2 | Win | 100 | 1 h 15 m | Show |
The Angels are scheduled to start left-hander Tyler Anderson (5-2, 5.23 ERA) on Sunday. In two career starts against Toronto covering 10 2/3 innings, he is 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA. The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Jose Berrios (8-7, 3.40). In eight career starts against the Angels, he is 2-5 with a 7.03 ERA. Toronto put closer Jordan Romano (lower back inflammation) on the injured list Saturday. He was removed from the 4-1 win Friday with two out in the ninth, and the final out was left to Yimi Garcia. Right-hander Nate Pearson was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. The Blue Jays appear set to use a closer committee in Romano's absence.
07-29-23 | Nationals +1.5 v. Mets | Top | 11-6 | Win | 100 | 10 h 2 m | Show |
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco (3-4, 5.82 ERA) is slated to start for the Mets against left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-11, 5.01). Carrasco took a loss in his latest start when he gave up five runs on a season-high 10 hits over a season-low 2 1/3 innings as the Mets fell 6-1 to the host Boston Red Sox on Sunday. He is 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in eight career games (seven starts) against the Nationals. Corbin took a defeat Monday after allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings during the Nationals' 10-6 loss to the visiting Colorado Rockies. He is 7-10 with a 4.41 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) against the Mets. Corbin beat New York on May 15 after yielding two runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out one and walked one in a 10-3 home victory.
07-29-23 | Guardians v. White Sox UNDER 9.5 | Top | 2-7 | Win | 100 | 9 h 32 m | Show |
Cleveland will send Logan Allen to the mound on Saturday. Allen (4-3, 3.39 ERA) is coming off a Monday home loss to the Kansas City Royals. He allowed five runs, four earned, and seven hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and no walks. The rookie left-hander went 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA in back-to-back May starts against Chicago, logging nine strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings. Chicago had yet to announce its pitcher but is expected to activate right-hander Mike Clevinger from the injured list to make the start. Clevinger (3-4, 3.88 ERA) has not pitched June 14. He landed on the IL with right biceps inflammation two days later. Clevinger, who spent his first four-plus seasons with Cleveland, is 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA in three starts against his former club. He beat the Guardians on May 17, when he gave up two runs on six hits in six-plus innings. He struck out five and walked four.
07-28-23 | Yankees -119 v. Orioles | Top | 0-1 | Loss | -119 | 9 h 51 m | Show |
Orioles rookie right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (2-2, 6.91 ERA) will make his 13th career start and first appearance against the Yankees. In two starts since returning to the majors following nearly two months with Triple-A Norfolk, Rodriguez has allowed six runs in 10 2/3 innings in a pair of no-decisions, but the game at Tampa Bay was encouraging on several fronts.
07-28-23 | Angels v. Blue Jays -1.5 | Top | 1-4 | Win | 108 | 6 h 18 m | Show |
Right-hander Lucas Giolito is set to make his Los Angeles Angels debut on Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the host Toronto Blue Jays. The Angels acquired Giolito and right-handed reliever Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for two prospects. The Angels also confirmed that they would not trade two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who can become a free agent at the end of the season, so the Blue Jays will be facing a team that is hoping to make a playoff run. Giolito is 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 21 starts this season. His 131 strikeouts rank 10th in the American League, and he has limited opponents to a .211 average in his past nine starts. Giolito spent 6 1/2 seasons in Chicago's rotation, winning 59 games. He was an All-Star selection in 2019, and threw a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 25, 2020. He is 2-2 with a 5.45 ERA in seven career starts against Toronto. Kevin Gausman (7-5, 3.18 ERA) is slated to start for the Blue Jays on Friday. He is 3-3 with a 4.78 ERA in eight career starts against the Angels.
07-27-23 | Cubs v. Cardinals -109 | Top | 10-3 | Loss | -109 | 8 h 24 m | Show |
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele has enjoyed more success against the St. Louis Cardinals than against any other opponent this season. He will get another crack at them Thursday when the Cubs face the Cardinals to open a four-game series in St. Louis. Steele (10-3, 2.95 ERA) is 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts against the Cardinals in 2023. In his latest outing, the left-hander allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Cubs beat St. Louis 4-3 on Friday. St. Louis will counter Steele with Miles Mikolas (6-5, 4.33 ERA), who will try to rebound from one of his worst starts of the season. The right-hander allowed the Cubs five runs on 11 hits and a walk in five innings during a no-decision on Saturday.
07-27-23 | Angels v. Tigers UNDER 9 | Top | 11-4 | Loss | -110 | 5 h 41 m | Show |
Patrick Sandoval (5-7, 4.16) will start Game 2 for Los Angeles. The left-hander is coming off a strong performance on July 18, when he held the New York Yankees to one run and two hits in 7 1/3 innings. Matt Manning (3-1, 3.19 ERA) had his latest outing interrupted by a rain delay. The 25-year-old righty pitched two scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres on Saturday, but manager A.J. Hinch opted to remove him after the delay lasted more than an hour.
07-26-23 | A's v. Giants UNDER 9.5 | Top | 3-8 | Loss | -110 | 12 h 51 m | Show |
Looking to duplicate Alex Cobb's starting effort will be left-hander Alex Wood (4-4, 4.99 ERA), who would require a reversal of recent form to do so. Wood, 32, pitched twice on the Giants' just-completed trip and never saw the fifth inning, allowing a total of six runs and 10 hits over 7 2/3 innings in his team's 8-4 win at Pittsburgh and 5-3 loss at Washington. He is 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA in five career starts against the Athletics. The A's received 4 2/3 strong innings from Waldichuk in a bulk-innings reliever role in Tuesday's loss. He added to the Giants' recent struggles against left-handers with two of their top right-handed bats -- Thairo Estrada (hand) and Mitch Haniger (forearm) -- out of the lineup with injuries. Oakland will send another lefty, Hogan Harris (2-4, 6.11), to the mound as the club attempts to put some runs on the scoreboard. The A's have been outscored 15-12 while losing four of their past five games. Harris pitched one of the best games of his young career last time out, limiting the Houston Astros to two runs and four hits over six innings in a 3-1 home loss on Thursday. He has yet to face the Giants in his career.
07-26-23 | Marlins v. Rays -164 | Top | 7-1 | Loss | -164 | 2 h 24 m | Show |
Tampa Bay is going with Zach Eflin (11-5, 3.36 ERA), its most reliable starter. At home, especially, the right-hander has impressed, with a 10-1 record and 2.10 ERA. The Marlins counter with Sandy Alcantara (3-9, 4.70). The 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner, Alcantara has provided innings, logging 126 1/3 in 20 starts, but has lacked consistency. On the road, the 27-year-old is 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 starts. A telling statistic from a year ago: He had a 2.63 ERA in day game starts. This season, the 6-foot-5 right-hander is 0-5 with a 4.98 ERA in matinees. Eflin has quite a bit of history facing the Marlins, dating to when he pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies. In 16 games (15 starts) against Miami, he is 5-7 with a 4.97 ERA in 88 2/3 innings. Eflin pitched a gem in his last start, tossing seven shutout innings and scattering two hits and a walk while striking out eight in a 3-0 win over the visiting Baltimore Orioles.
07-25-23 | Rockies v. Nationals -130 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 100 | 10 h 38 m | Show |
Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (8-8, 6.18 ERA) will look to eat some innings when he makes his 21st start of the season on Tuesday. He took the loss in an April 8 matchup with Washington, dropping his career record against the Nationals to 2-2 with a 7.23 ERA in four starts. Gomber won four consecutive starts before suffering a loss against the Houston Astros last Wednesday. On Tuesday, Gomber will be trying to reach the nine-win mark for just the second time in his five seasons in the majors. Right-hander Trevor Williams (5-5, 4.38) is set to oppose Gomber. He was the winning pitcher in the April 8 meeting in Denver, giving up two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings for his first win of the season. Williams is 3-2 with a 4.97 ERA in five career starts against the Rockies. In his most recent outing, Williams allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings against the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday. He settled for a no-decision and hasn't picked up a win since July 2, when he beat the Phillies.
07-25-23 | Marlins v. Rays -190 | Top | 1-4 | Win | 100 | 8 h 56 m | Show |
In the opener on Tuesday, Miami will go with Edward Cabrera (5-5, 4.50 ERA), while Tampa Bay counters with Tyler Glasnow (3-3, 3.62). Cabrera has faced Tampa Bay just once in his career, allowing three earned runs in three innings (9.00 ERA) of a loss in 2021. Glasnow has an 0-1 mark and 5.28 ERA in three starts against Miami. Both pitchers possess powerful stuff, and putting the ball in play will be a challenge for both offenses. Cabrera has struck out 90 in 72 innings for 11.25 strikeouts per nine innings. Glasnow has been even more overpowering, boasting a 13.17 K/9 after fanning 80 in 54 2/3 innings. The Rays are just 4-14 in July, and the Marlins present a formidable team with their hard-throwing staff.
07-24-23 | Cardinals v. Diamondbacks -105 | Top | 10-6 | Loss | -105 | 16 h 58 m | Show |
Adam Wainwright has looked like a pitcher approaching the end of the line. The 41-year-old Cardinals legend gets the chance to show that there's still life in his right arm when St. Louis visits the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night at Phoenix. Wainwright (3-4, 7.66 ERA) will come off the injured list to make the start against Arizona in the opener of a three-game series. He has been sidelined due to shoulder irritation and will be making his first appearance since July 4. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Wainwright will throw approximately 65 pitches. Right-hander Ryne Nelson (6-5, 4.82) will be on the mound for Arizona. Nelson, 25, has allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of his past four starts. That includes giving up two runs and three hits in seven innings while defeating the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Nelson had one rough outing during the stretch, giving up seven runs and nine hits over three innings of a loss to the visiting New York Mets on July 6.
07-24-23 | Giants v. Tigers UNDER 8.5 | Top | 1-5 | Win | 100 | 8 h 37 m | Show |
While the Giants and MLB's websites did not immediately list a starter for Monday's game, numerous Detroit and San Francisco media reports indicated that right-hander Ross Stripling would get the nod. It is his 10th this season and 15th overall appearance. He's coming off his longest outing this season, a six-inning start against Cincinnati on Wednesday. Stripling (0-3, 5.92 ERA) gave up three runs and four hits that day. He gave up a three-run homer in the third but hung around for another three innings. He'll be opposed by lefty Tarik Skubal (0-1, 5.25 ERA), who will make his fourth start after recovering from flexor tendon surgery last August. Skubal pitched four scoreless innings in each of his first two outings, then got hammered for seven runs and eight hits in four innings at Kansas City on Tuesday. Skubal gave up two runs in the third and five more in the fourth.

Alek Manoah fell to 2-8, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks in 3.0 innings, as the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the San Diego Padres 9-1 on Tuesday. Manoah did not strike out a batter, ending the game with a 6.18 ERA and 1.84 WHIP on the season.
07-23-23 | Royals +180 v. Yankees | Top | 5-8 | Loss | -100 | 4 h 10 m | Show |
New York's Luis Severino (1-4, 6.66 ERA) will pitch at home for the first time since enduring one of the worst starts of his career. On July 5, in his final start before the All-Star break, Severino was shelled for seven runs and 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles, marking the fourth time this season he allowed at least five runs. The Yankees want to see the version of Severino from his last start, when he allowed one run and six hits in six innings during a no-decision Monday against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. Severino is 2-1 with a 4.63 ERA in four career starts against the Royals covering 23 1/3 innings. He last faced them May 1, 2022, in Kansas City, when he surrendered four runs (three earned) and seven hits in five innings in a no-decision. The Royals are going with Jordan Lyles (1-11, 6.05), who has shown better results since losing his first 11 decisions. The losses came in his first 14 starts, when he posted a 6.89 ERA. Since then, he is 1-0 with a 3.13 ERA in four outings, and he has allowed just two homers in that span after giving up 18 during his winless skid. Lyles is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. Last year, while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles, he was 2-2 with a 4.04 ERA in six starts.
07-22-23 | Diamondbacks v. Reds OVER 10.5 | Top | 2-4 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 8 m | Show |
The Diamondbacks had not formally announced their starting pitcher for Saturday, but it is expected to rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (0-3, 9.82 ERA), who is with the team. Pfaadt would be making his seventh major league start of the season but first since June 29 against Tampa Bay, a 6-1 loss. In two-plus innings, he allowed six runs and seven hits. Before that start, he last appeared for Arizona in late May. The Reds will counter with another rookie, left-hander Brandon Williamson (1-2, 4.96 ERA). Three of the past four starts he pitched in were impacted by rain. He lasted just two innings in Baltimore on June 26 before the game was interrupted by a rain delay. On July 6, Williamson came out of the game after just three innings at Washington following a long delay. On Monday, he delivered his second quality start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings before the game against the visiting San Francisco Giants was suspended in the eighth inning due to storms.
07-22-23 | Dodgers -1.5 v. Rangers | Top | 16-3 | Win | 130 | 4 h 47 m | Show |
Dodgers rookie right-hander Bobby Miller (5-1, 4.25 ERA) is scheduled to start against the Rangers for the first time. Miller experienced right knee discomfort in his last start vs. the Mets on Sunday, but he told MLB.com he's "all good." Against New York, Miller allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.
07-21-23 | Astros -1.5 v. A's | Top | 6-4 | Win | 100 | 11 h 28 m | Show |
A couple of hard-luck left-handers go head-to-head Friday night when the visiting Houston Astros aim for their eighth consecutive win without a loss against the Oakland Athletics this season. Houston's Framber Valdez (7-6, 2.76 ERA) and Oakland's JP Sears (1-6, 3.99), a pair of six-game losers despite respectable ERAs, are scheduled to duel one night after J.P. France and Hogan Harris put on a nice show on the mound. The Astros' France prevailed in the series-opening pitchers' duel, getting a two-run, go-ahead double from Kyle Tucker and a solo home run from Alex Bregman in a 3-1 win. Valdez will try to give the Astros a third straight win overall after having been a bit questionable following his last start, a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. He left that contest in the seventh inning with a calf issue. Sears is winless in his past six starts, going 0-3 despite a respectable 3.68 ERA. He has been especially snake-bitten in July, as he has yet to pick up a decision despite producing a 1.93 ERA in three starts against the Detroit, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. Overall this season, he has just one win to show for 10 starts in which he allowed two or fewer runs.
07-21-23 | Padres -136 v. Tigers | Top | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 9 h 39 m | Show |
Reese Olson (1-3, 3.96 ERA) will start for Detroit on Friday. The rookie right-hander will be making his 10th appearance and seventh start of the season. Olson pitched well in his latest outing but didn't get any run support in a 2-0 loss at Seattle on Sunday. He lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs and six hits while recording five strikeouts. Seattle scored a run in the first and another in the fourth on a solo homer. Olson will be opposed by right-hander Seth Lugo (3-4, 3.78 ERA). After being a reliever for the majority of his first seven major league seasons with the New York Mets, Lugo has appeared exclusively as a starter for the Padres this year. He is set to make his 14th start of the season. He has also been stingy with base on balls, allowing just 13 in 69 innings compared with 64 strikeouts. He got roughed up on Sunday, surrendering five runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 5 1/3 innings at Philadelphia.
07-20-23 | Cardinals +1.5 v. Cubs | Top | 7-2 | Win | 100 | 9 h 23 m | Show |
The St. Louis Cardinals are not playing like a club that reportedly could be a seller at the upcoming trade deadline. Meanwhile, Marcus Stroman might be making one of his final few starts for the Chicago Cubs. Riding a season-high five-game winning streak, the visiting Cardinals look to again get the best of Stroman during series opener against the rival Cubs on Thursday night. One of the major leagues' biggest disappointments, St. Louis entered the All-Star break 38-52. Earlier this week, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak hinted the club could deal veteran players for prospects by the Aug. 1 deadline. However, after losing 7-5 in 10 innings against the Washington Nationals on Friday, the Cardinals have totaled 34 runs and batted .330 while winning five straight, highlighted by this week's home sweep of the Miami Marlins. Though St. Louis is 10 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, the Cardinals are winners of seven of their past eight.
07-20-23 | Brewers v. Phillies +1.5 | Top | 4-0 | Loss | -190 | 2 h 2 m | Show |
The Phillies will hand the ball Thursday to right-hander Taijuan Walker (11-3, 4.00 ERA), who has won seven consecutive starts. Walker signed a four-year, $72 million deal in the offseason. After some rough early outings, he has proven to be one of the most reliable starters in the National League. In Walker's latest start, against the Padres on Saturday, he allowed four hits and two runs in five innings. Walker lost his lone career start against the Brewers when he gave up four runs on six hits in six-plus innings at Milwaukee last September while pitching for the New York Mets. Right-hander Corbin Burnes (8-5, 3.73 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Brewers on Thursday. In his most recent start, Burnes gave up two hits and two walks while striking out 13 in six scoreless innings against the Reds on Friday. Even more impressive was how he competed in the sweltering 90-plus degree conditions at Cincinnati. "He was getting better as we gave him time," Counsell said. "To strike out the side in the sixth was impressive." Burnes added, "The curveball was really good tonight." Burnes is 0-1 with a 1.08 ERA in three career games (one start) against the Phillies.
07-19-23 | Guardians v. Pirates OVER 8.5 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 100 | 1 h 48 m | Show |
In the series finale, Cleveland right-hander Aaron Civale (3-2, 2.65 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh left-hander Rich Hill (7-9, 4.76). Civale did not get a decision on Friday when he gave up two runs and five hits in five innings at Texas. The Rangers came back against the Guardians' bullpen for a 12-4 win. Even with a fresh bullpen after the All-Star break, in hindsight, there might have been questions regarding whether Civale was pulled too quickly. He had an eight-pitch fifth and left with a 4-2 lead after throwing 79 pitches.
07-18-23 | Padres -1.5 v. Blue Jays | Top | 9-1 | Win | 130 | 8 h 50 m | Show |
The Padres will send right-hander Joe Musgrove (8-2, 3.29 ERA) to the mound Tuesday. Musgrove is 7-0 with a 1.79 ERA in his last nine starts, allowing one run or fewer six times during the stretch. Musgrove defeated the New York Mets in his final start before the All-Star break. He gave up three hits over six scoreless innings. Musgrove, 30, is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in three career appearances (one start) against Toronto, the organization that drafted him in the first round in 2011 before trading him to the Houston Astros one year later. Right-hander Alek Manoah (2-7, 5.91) will start for Toronto and aims to follow up on an encouraging start against the Detroit Tigers on July 7. He gave up one run, five hits and no walks and struck out eight for his first victory since April 5. It was Manoah's first major league outing since June 5, when he gave up six runs and recorded just one out against the Astros. Manoah, a 2022 All-Star, even was torched for 11 runs in 2 2/3 innings in a rookie-level game on June 27 after being demoted.
07-18-23 | Guardians v. Pirates OVER 8.5 | Top | 10-1 | Win | 100 | 8 h 57 m | Show |
On Tuesday, Cleveland left-hander Logan Allen (3-2, 3.47 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller (9-4, 3.31). Keller, a first-time All-Star after establishing himself as the Pirates' ace this season, pitched one inning in the Midsummer Classic last week. He will have gone a week without pitching since that appearance as Pittsburgh chose not to use him in its first four games following the All-Star break.
07-17-23 | Marlins v. Cardinals OVER 8 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 8 h 34 m | Show |
Jesus Luzardo (8-5, 3.29 ERA) has allowed four runs in 31 2/3 innings over his past five appearances, all quality starts. He has already set career highs for innings pitched (109 1/3) and strikeouts (129). The Cardinals originally scheduled Monday to be a bullpen game with starter Adam Wainwright on the injured list due to a sore shoulder and Jordan Montgomery needing another day to recover from a mild hamstring strain. However, Miles Mikolas (5-5, 4.12 ERA) threw just three quick innings against the Nationals on Friday before the game was suspended due to rain. Mikolas held Washington hitless, and Marmol elected to plug him into the Monday start.
07-16-23 | Astros -124 v. Angels | Top | 9-8 | Win | 100 | 9 h 36 m | Show |
The Astros plan to start right-hander Cristian Javier on the mound in the series finale. They're hoping the sight of Los Angeles hitters in the batters box will help turn things around for Javier, who has recorded five straight no-decisions after winning five starts in a row. Javier (7-1, 4.34) is 5-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 career appearances (six starts) against the Angels. His five-game winning streak earlier this season began and ended versus Los Angeles. Javier allowed one run and six hits in six innings of a 9-6 win over the Angels on June 3. He also beat Los Angeles on May 10, permitting two runs and three hits in six innings while striking out a season-high 11 batters in the 5-4 win. Javier has struggled in his past three starts, however, posting a 15.19 ERA. Houston, however, won all three games.
07-16-23 | Giants -138 v. Pirates | Top | 8-4 | Win | 100 | 2 h 41 m | Show |
San Francisco did not name a starter for the series finale until after Saturday's game -- left-hander Alex Wood (4-3, 4.68 ERA) -- while Pittsburgh is scheduled to go with right-hander Osvaldo Bido (1-1, 4.44). Wood is 6-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 15 career games against the Pirates, 14 of them starts. Bido, who has never faced San Francisco, is coming off his first career win. That was July 9 when he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings over the fourth and fifth innings in relief at Arizona as the Pirates went with a bullpen game on the eve of the All-Star break. The rookie had made five starts before that lone relief appearance since being recalled and worked Sunday on three days' rest.
07-15-23 | Tigers v. Mariners UNDER 7.5 | Top | 6-0 | Win | 100 | 10 h 42 m | Show |
The series continues Saturday, with All-Star right-handers Michael Lorenzen (3-6, 4.03 ERA) of Detroit and George Kirby (8-7, 3.09) of Seattle scheduled to take the mound. Kirby has won his past two starts -- against Tampa Bay and Houston -- allowing just three earned runs over 13 2/3 innings in the process. Kirby is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two previous starts against Detroit. Lorenzen snapped a four-game losing streak in his most recent start, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory against visiting Oakland. He is 1-2 with an 8.16 ERA in four career appearances against Seattle, including three starts.
07-15-23 | Giants v. Pirates OVER 8.5 | Top | 3-1 | Loss | -115 | 7 h 11 m | Show |
In the middle game of the series, San Francisco right-hander Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.91 ERA) and Pittsburgh right-hander Johan Oviedo (3-10, 4.75) are scheduled to start. In his last game before the All-Star break, Cobb turned in a gem. On July 5 against the visiting Seattle Mariners, he pitched six scoreless innings, scattering six hits, striking out seven and walking none in the Giants' 2-0 win. The result also ending San Francisco's four-game losing streak. Oviedo, meanwhile, has lost his past seven decisions, and he took defeats in each of his past six starts. Most recently, he gave up five runs in 6 2/3 innings on July 6 as the Pirates lost 5-2 to the host Los Angeles Dodgers. Of the six hits he allowed, two were two-run homers.
07-15-23 | Padres v. Phillies +1.5 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 1 h 19 m | Show |
Suarez is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in four career games (one start) against the Padres.
07-14-23 | Dodgers v. Mets +115 | Top | 6-0 | Loss | -100 | 15 h 22 m | Show |
Left-hander Julio Urias (6-5, 4.76 ERA) is slated to start for the Dodgers against right-hander Justin Verlander (3-4, 3.60) in a battle of former 20-game winners. The Dodgers closed out the first half by beating the visiting Los Angeles Angels to complete a two-game series sweep and run their winning streak to four. The Mets suffered their second straight loss Sunday to the host San Diego Padres. At 51-38, the Dodgers -- who won a franchise-record 111 games last season -- are on pace to record fewer than 100 victories in a 162-game schedule for the first time since 2017. Los Angeles went 92-71 before falling to the Houston Astros in a seven-game World Series.
07-14-23 | Brewers -116 v. Reds | Top | 1-0 | Win | 100 | 15 h 14 m | Show |
Milwaukee ace and All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes (7-5, 3.94 ERA) will start the series opener Friday against Cincinnati. Burnes has a pair of quality starts against Cincinnati in his previous two outings, including on July 7 when he held the Reds to three runs on two hits over six innings in a 7-3 Milwaukee win. Burnes is 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 16 career appearances against Cincinnati, including six starts. The Reds counter with another right-hander in Graham Ashcraft (4-6, 6.28), making his team-leading 17th start of 2023. In his last start on July 5 in Washington, Ashcraft snapped a personal three-game skid and won for the first time since May 28, scattering seven hits and one run over six innings in Cincinnati's 9-2 win. Ashcraft is winless in four career starts against Milwaukee, going 0-3 with 10.13 ERA. He was tagged for a career-worst 10 runs -- all earned -- on nine hits over four innings in a 10-8 Milwaukee win on June 3 in Cincinnati.
07-11-23 | National League v. American League UNDER 7.5 | Top | 3-2 | Win | 100 | 9 h 18 m | Show |
With Ohtani unavailable, Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (9-2, 2.85 ERA in the first half) was named the AL starter. Cole is a six-time All-Star but last pitched in the game in 2015. He'll go on two days rest after pitching 7 1/3 innings on Saturday and oppose Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen (11-3, 3.04 ERA).
07-09-23 | Phillies +110 v. Marlins | Top | 3-7 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 15 m | Show |
Sunday's pitching matchup will feature Marlins lefty Jesus Luzardo (7-5, 3.32 ERA) against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola (8-5, 4.30). Luzardo, who leads the Marlins in wins and tops Miami's starters in ERA, has faced the Phillies four times. He is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA against them. Nola is 5-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 21 starts against the Marlins. This season, he had an ERA of 3.58 for April, 4.93 for May and 4.06 for June, but he is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in July. If Nola does not throw a complete game on Sunday, the Phillies can turn to a solid bullpen that had a 26-inning scoreless-innings streak that ended on Saturday.
07-09-23 | Blue Jays -126 v. Tigers | Top | 4-3 | Win | 100 | 2 h 2 m | Show |
Skubal (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season for Detroit on Sunday. Skubal, who underwent flexor tendon surgery last summer, tossed four no-hit innings against Oakland on Tuesday. Chris Bassitt (8-5, 4.09 ERA), who will start the series finale for Toronto, survived a rough patch to post back-to-back solid outings. Bassitt gave up 15 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings during a stretch of three starts last month. In his final June start, he tossed six shutout outings against San Francisco while racking up 12 strikeouts. In his outing on Tuesday, Bassitt gave up three runs and six hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox. Lost in the euphoria of the no-hitter was the triumphant return of Tigers outfielder Riley Greene. After recovering from a leg injury, Greene was activated off the injured list on Saturday and reached base four times. He was 2-for-2 and walked twice
07-08-23 | Braves v. Rays +1.5 | Top | 6-1 | Loss | -130 | 8 h 40 m | Show |
Atlanta is going with All-Star Spencer Strider (10-2, 3.66 ERA), who leads the majors with 155 strikeouts. Tampa Bay is turning to rookie Taj Bradley (5-4, 5.27), who has 76 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings. Neither starter has yet to face the opposition. Strider is one of a franchise-high eight players to be selected to the All-Star Game. The 24-year-old has won each of his past four starts, fanning 34 in 24 2/3 innings in that span. He gave up three runs (two earned) with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
07-08-23 | Cubs v. Yankees -1.5 | Top | 3-6 | Win | 105 | 2 h 40 m | Show |
The Yankees will attempt to produce improved results at the plate for Cole (8-2, 2.79 ERA), who is 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in his past five outings. Cole has allowed two runs or fewer 13 times and the Yankees dropped to 9-4 in those games when he allowed two runs on six hits in six innings during a 5-1 loss at St. Louis on Sunday. Cole is 10-3 with a 2.53 ERA in 15 career starts against the Cubs and is facing Chicago for the first time since striking out 12 in six innings for Houston on May 27, 2019. After completing their 10th shutout this season, the Cubs hand the ball to Drew Smyly (7-5, 4.10). Smyly was 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA through his first 10 starts but is 2-4 with a 6.49 ERA in his past seven. Smyly took a no-decision for the first time since May 17 on Monday when he allowed three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings at Milwaukee. During his second-shortest outing this season, Smyly threw a season-low 73 pitches five days after getting tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. Smyly is 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. He last opposed the Yankees on Sept. 20, 2016, when he allowed one run on four hits in six innings with Tampa Bay.
07-07-23 | Cubs +1.5 v. Yankees | Top | 3-0 | Win | 100 | 15 h 1 m | Show |
Cubs are 22-4 in their last 26 Friday games. Yankees are 2-7 in their last 9 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.
07-07-23 | Braves v. Rays -110 | Top | 2-1 | Loss | -110 | 15 h 56 m | Show |
On Friday, the Braves are sending veteran Charlie Morton (8-6, 3.57 ERA) to the mound, while the Rays counter with fellow righty Tyler Glasnow (2-2, 4.50). Morton, 39, pitched for the Rays in 2019-20, and was a prominent performer on Tampa Bay's 2020 team that lost in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. The right-hander has made six career starts against the Rays and holds a 2-3 record with a 3.44 ERA in those meetings. In his last two starts, Glasnow has combined to strike out 23 in 10 2/3 innings. However, he has nothing to show for it on his record, taking a loss at Seattle on Saturday and a no-decision at home against the Kansas City Royals on June 25.
07-06-23 | Cubs +100 v. Brewers | Top | 5-6 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 10 m | Show |
Marcus Stroman has not pitched like an All-Star of late for the Chicago Cubs. However, since the start of last season, he's been stellar against the Milwaukee Brewers. Looking to avoid a third straight losing start, Stroman can help the visiting Cubs record their third consecutive victory and claim this four-game set from the Brewers on Thursday. From May 19-June 20, Stroman (9-6, 2.76 ERA) allowed seven earned runs and 27 hits over 48 2/3 innings to win seven straight starts. Since then, though, the right-hander has yielded eight earned runs and 13 hits over nine innings in losing two in a row. He gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings of Saturday's 6-0 loss to Cleveland. Scheduled Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.67) is 0-4 with a 5.45 ERA in seven starts since winning at Tampa Bay on May 21. The right-hander was serviceable on Friday at Pittsburgh, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks while striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings as the Brewers blew a late lead in the 8-7 defeat.
07-06-23 | A's +156 v. Tigers | Top | 0-9 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 23 m | Show |
Rookie left-hander Hogan Harris (2-2, 5.17 ERA) will start the series finale for the A's. He went 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in his past three starts after posting back-to-back victories. Harris gave up five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees on June 29. He yielded just two runs in the first five innings, but New York erupted for eight runs in the sixth. He will be opposed by right-hander Michael Lorenzen (2-6, 4.28 ERA), who was surprisingly chosen as Detroit's All-Star representative.
07-05-23 | Reds -115 v. Nationals | Top | 9-2 | Win | 100 | 8 h 55 m | Show |
Josiah Gray (6-6, 3.30 ERA), who was named to the National League All-Star team on Sunday, starts for the Nationals, who have dropped the first two games of their four-game set against the Reds. Right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-6, 6.66 ERA) will start for the Reds. After going 0-3 with a 16.03 ERA in his first three June starts, he rebounded in his latest outing, allowing one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings of a no-decision against the San Diego Padres on Friday. He walked two and struck out seven.
07-05-23 | Cardinals v. Marlins UNDER 8.5 | Top | 9-10 | Loss | -110 | 8 h 40 m | Show |
Miami, which has gone 13-6 over its past 19 games, will start Bryan Hoeing (1-2, 3.72 ERA). The right-hander, though, has been much more effective as a reliever (1-0, 1.56 ERA over 17 1/3 innings). As a starter, he is 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA in five outings covering 21 1/3 innings. The good news for Hoeing on Wednesday is that his home numbers have been stellar (0-0, 0.87 ERA). On the road, he is 1-2 with a 7.00 ERA. Hoeing is surely hoping he gets half the support the Marlins provided on Tuesday, when they routed the Cardinals 15-2. The 15 runs were a season high for Miami.
07-04-23 | Angels v. Padres -1.5 | Top | 5-8 | Win | 170 | 8 h 37 m | Show |
Ohtani will pitch against the Padres for the first time in his career in front of what is expected to be San Diego's 35th sellout crowd of the season. Over his last three starts, Ohtani is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA. The Padres will counter with Joe Musgrove (6-2, 3.80 ERA). The right-hander is 2-0 over his last three starts with a 2.37 ERA. In seven starts since May 26, Musgrove is 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA. Musgrove has a 3-1 career record against the Angels with a 2.88 ERA in seven appearances (three starts). However, he has faced Los Angeles only once since 2017, when he threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout on Aug. 27, 2021.
07-04-23 | Cardinals +170 v. Marlins | Top | 2-15 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 14 m | Show |
Wainwright (3-3, 7.45 ERA) allowed 13 runs on 17 hits over just 4 2/3 innings in his last two efforts while remaining stuck on 198 career victories. In his most recent start, Wainwright allowed six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings in the 14-0 loss to the Houston Astros. He walked three and struck out one. Wainwright is 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 16 career appearances (14 starts) against the Marlins.

Domingo German on Wednesday joined Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone as the only New York Yankees to throw a perfect game, and now the intrigue will be about what the follow-up performance looks like. Coming off his historic perfect game, German will be on the mound Monday night when the Yankees return home for the opener of a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees, who dropped two of three at home to Baltimore May 23-25, are returning to New York after a 3-3 road trip. They ended the trip by being held to three hits in a 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. German (5-5, 4.54 ERA) had allowed a combined 17 earned runs in consecutive losses at Boston and to Seattle before making history in Oakland. The right-hander threw 99 pitches, including 51 curveballs, and got nine strikeouts against the Athletics in an 11-0 victory. Tyler Wells (6-4, 3.21) starts for Baltimore and hopes to avoid his third straight loss. He allowed four runs in five innings June 21 in a 7-2 defeat at Tampa Bay, and then allowed two runs in six innings in a 3-1 loss to the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. We anticipate German not being as sharp as he was against Oakland.

After struggling through a June to forget, St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas will try to gain a fresh start in July. Mikolas finished 0-4 with a 6.07 ERA in five starts last month. He will flip the calendar with a tough road assignment against the Miami Marlins Monday at LoanDepot Park. The Cardinals will have their hands full against left-hander Braxton Garrett (4-2, 3.53), who has allowed just 11 earned runs in 50 innings over his last nine starts for a 1.98 ERA in that span. In his previous start, Garrett held the Red Sox to one run on three hits in five innings in an outing cut short by a rain delay in Boston.
07-02-23 | Nationals v. Phillies UNDER 9.5 | Top | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 3 h 48 m | Show |
Washington plans to start right-hander Trevor Williams in the series finale, while the Phillies will counter with left-hander Ranger Suarez. Williams and Suarez went head-to-head on June 4 in the nation's capital, and Suarez had the better performance in the 11-3 win by Philadelphia. Williams allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, while Suarez earned the win after giving up one run and eight hits in seven innings. Williams (4-4, 4.28 ERA) most recently pitched four innings against the Seattle Mariners last Monday, allowing three runs and eight hits while avoiding the loss in the 8-4 defeat. Outside of a rain-suspended game on May 13 against the New York Mets, it was the shortest outing of the season for Williams, who is 0-3 with a 5.22 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) against the Phillies. Suarez (2-2, 3.18) had one of the best months of June in the majors, posting a 2-0 mark and 1.08 ERA in five starts covering 33 1/3 innings.
07-02-23 | Twins -111 v. Orioles | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -111 | 1 h 27 m | Show |
Twins right-hander Sonny Gray (4-2, 2.67 ERA) looks to continue the stinginess evidenced by Minnesota starters in the series thus far. Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober combined to limit the Orioles to one run and five hits over 13 innings in the first two games. The Orioles have lost four straight and 16 of their last 31 and will try to avoid being swept for the first time this season on Sunday. |
