11-01-23 | Rangers +101 v. Diamondbacks | Top | 5-0 | Win | 101 | 9 h 3 m | Show |
The Texas Rangers are one win away from their first World Series title, and they will ask Nathan Eovaldi to finish off the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5 on Wednesday. Texas grabbed a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with an 11-7 win in Game 4 on Tuesday, as leadoff hitter Marcus Semien contributed a three-run homer and a two-run triple. The Rangers took the 48,388 fans out of the game early with five-run innings in the second and third. The Diamondbacks scored six runs in the last two innings but still fell far short. Texas, which is a record 10-0 on the road in the postseason, will look to complete a perfect away run behind Eovaldi. The veteran right-hander is 4-0 with a 3.52 ERA over five postseason starts, with 36 strikeouts and five walks in 30 2/3 innings. Eovaldi allowed five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in Game 1, which Texas won 6-5 in 11 innings. He fanned eight and walked one.
10-31-23 | Rangers v. Diamondbacks -108 | Top | 11-7 | Loss | -108 | 8 h 52 m | Show |
Game 4 looks like a bullpen game for both teams. Left-hander Andrew Heaney (0-0) is set to make his third start and fifth appearance for the Rangers this postseason, with six innings pitched and four runs allowed on seven hits thus far. Heaney has a 6.00 earned run average and opponents are batting .292 against him this postseason. Heaney went 10-6 with a 4.15 ERA in the regular season and made 28 starts, with nine wins as a starter. The Diamondbacks counter with lefty Joe Mantiply, an All-Star in 2022 who made his first career World Series appearance in Game 1. He pitched a scoreless inning. Mantiply is 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA over eight career postseason appearances (all this season). He did not allow an earned run over his last six games of the regular season (8 1/3 innings) and had a 1.38 ERA over 10 games in September.
10-24-23 | Diamondbacks v. Phillies -154 | Top | 4-2 | Loss | -154 | 8 h 2 m | Show |
Merrill Kelly understands the David vs. Goliath storyline permeating the National League Championship Series. But after knocking off two division champions earlier this month, Kelly and the 84-win Arizona Diamondbacks -- two years removed from a 110-loss season and with one player making more than $10 million this year -- will have their slingshot ready to go in their biggest game yet on Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks will look to continue their unlikely October run and the Phillies will look to return to the World Series when Arizona visits Philadelphia for Game 7 of the NLCS. Rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (0-0, 2.13 ERA this postseason) is slated to start for the Diamondbacks against left-hander Ranger Suarez (1-0, 0.64). The Diamondbacks forced the winner-take-all finale Monday night, when Tommy Pham and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit back-to-back homers to open the second inning and Kelly gave up one run over five frames in a 5-1 victory. Tuesday's winner will begin the World Series on Friday against the Texas Rangers, who clinched the American League pennant by rolling to an 11-4 win over the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series on Monday night. The Rangers will have home-field advantage in the Fall Classic regardless of who they play
10-22-23 | Rangers v. Astros -116 | 9-2 | Loss | -116 | 17 h 44 m | Show
While the climactic event from Game 5 of the American League Championship Series served the Houston Astros well, it did not enable them to complete their foremost task. Houston secured a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series after Jose Altuve clubbed a dramatic three-run, ninth-inning homer that yielded a 5-4 victory over the Rangers on Friday and a sweep of all three games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. By virtue of the seismic blast, the Astros moved one step closer to securing their third consecutive AL pennant, needing a victory in Game 6 on Sunday in Houston to avoid a winner-take-all affair in Game 7 the following evening. The issue for Houston is its relative ineptitude at Minute Maid Park, where the Astros finished with a sub-.500 record (39-42, compared to 51-30 on the road) during the regular season prior to losing three of four home games this postseason. For all the success the Astros enjoyed in Games 3-5, plenty of hard work remains.
10-21-23 | Phillies v. Diamondbacks +120 | Top | 6-1 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 34 m | Show |
The Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies each used eight pitchers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on Friday, a contest won by the Diamondbacks behind a three-run, eighth-inning rally. With so many arms needed in Arizona's 6-5 victory that tied the best-of-seven series at two wins apiece, both managers are counting on their aces to come through with lengthy performances on Saturday in Game 5. The Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen (17-9, 3.47 ERA regular season; 2-1, 4.96 postseason) will oppose the Phillies' Zack Wheeler (13-6, 3.61 regular season; 2-0, 2.37) in a matchup of right-handers.
10-20-23 | Astros v. Rangers -106 | Top | 5-4 | Loss | -106 | 13 h 53 m | Show |
The Houston Astros dominated the past two games of the American League Championship Series with their bats. Now they will look for ace pitcher Justin Verlander to play a big role on Friday afternoon when the right-hander takes the mound for the crucial Game 5 matchup against the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas. The best-of-seven series is tied at two games apiece. Houston dropped the first two games of the ALCS at home before it racked up 18 runs in back-to-back victories at the Rangers' ballpark. The ball now goes to Verlander (1-1, 1.42 ERA this postseason), who is used to the big-game stage. He will face Texas left-hander Jordan Montgomery (2-0, 2.08).
10-19-23 | Phillies v. Diamondbacks +117 | 1-2 | Win | 117 | 14 h 45 m | Show
Rookie Brandon Pfaadt has a daunting task on his hands Thursday when the Arizona Diamondbacks bid to subdue the homer-happy Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series in Phoenix. The Phillies have gone deep 15 times in the past four playoff games, the most homers hit by a team in a four-game span in major league postseason history. Philadelphia has homered three times in each of the first two contests of the NLCS to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Kyle Schwarber went deep in the Phillies' 5-3 victory in Game 1 Monday and homered twice the following night in a 10-0 rout in Game 2. Schwarber's multi-homer performance was the fourth by a Philadelphia player this postseason, with Nick Castellanos accomplishing the feat twice and Bryce Harper doing so in Game 3 of the NL Division Series. All four performances were in front of raucous crowds at Citizens Bank Park. With the series shifting to Chase Field, the right-handed Pfaadt (0-0, 3.86 ERA this postseason) is hoping for a bit of home cooking to fluster the Phillies.
10-18-23 | Astros +120 v. Rangers | 8-5 | Win | 120 | 7 h 53 m | Show
Texas will go for the 3-0 lead behind right-hander Max Scherzer (13-7, 3.77 ERA regular season), who is making his first start since Sept. 12 after sustaining a teres major muscle strain in his pitching shoulder. Postseason force Cristian Javier (1-0, 0.00) will start for the Astros. Scherzer, 39, was activated for this series after missing the first two rounds of the postseason.
10-16-23 | Diamondbacks +149 v. Phillies | Top | 3-5 | Loss | -100 | 54 h 4 m | Show |
The Phillies haven't confirmed their rotation order yet, but Game 1 is likely to see aces Zac Gallen and Zack Wheeler get the ball. Always nice when aces match up in Game 1. To win the series, the D-backs must win a game at Citizens Bank Park and must win a game started by Wheeler or Aaron Nola. That's just how the math works. Getting both out of the way in Game 1 would be a good start to the series. Keep an eye on Arizona's running game. They ranked second with 166 stolen bases this season (with an excellent 86% success rate) and Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto threw out only 19% of base-stealers this year, below the league average. The D-backs could really push the envelope on the bases in Game 1 and in the series in general.
10-16-23 | Rangers +115 v. Astros | Top | 5-4 | Win | 115 | 13 h 2 m | Show |
Left-hander Framber Valdez (0-1, 10.38 ERA in postseason) is the scheduled starter for the Astros in Game 2. He allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins in Game 2 of the AL Division Series. The loss dropped Valdez, who finished 12-11 with a 3.45 ERA across 31 regular-season starts, to 7-3 with a 3.82 ERA over 14 career postseason appearances (13 starts). Valdez is 7-5 with a 2.90 ERA over 16 career appearances (13 starts) against the Rangers. In three starts against Texas this season, Valdez finished 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA. Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (2-0, 1.32) has the starting assignment for the Rangers on Monday. He has allowed one run in each of his two starts this postseason, with Texas clinching series against the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles with Eovaldi on the bump. Eovaldi has recorded 15 strikeouts against 11 hits and zero walks in 13 2/3 innings this postseason. Eovaldi is 3-4 with a 4.42 ERA over 10 career regular-season starts against the Astros. He was the pitcher of record in a 14-1 loss to Houston on Sept. 5 after surrendering four runs on five hits -- including two home runs -- and one walk with one strikeout while recording only four outs. Eovaldi finished 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA in two starts against the Astros this season, including a 5-2 win at Minute Maid Park after he tossed seven shutout innings while allowing two hits and issuing four walks.
10-11-23 | Braves v. Phillies -121 | Top | 2-10 | Win | 100 | 15 h 40 m | Show |
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Braves had not settled on who would start Game 3 opposite Philadelphia ace right-hander Aaron Nola (1-0, 0.00 ERA this postseason). Snitker said the Braves were weighing whether to use one of their traditional starters or an opener out of the bullpen. Nola, who went 12-9 with a 4.46 ERA in the regular season, scattered three hits in seven scoreless innings of the Phillies' series-clinching win over the Marlins. When he faced Atlanta in Game 3 of last year's NLDS, Nola gave up just one unearned run on five hits over six innings in a winning effort. He is also 15-10 with a 3.40 ERA in 33 career regular-season starts against the Braves.
10-10-23 | Orioles v. Rangers -133 | 1-7 | Win | 100 | 32 h 54 m | Show
Nathan Eovaldi improved to 1-0 this postseason, allowing one run on six hits in 6.2 innings, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1 on Wednesday. Eovaldi struck out eight, ending the game with a 1.35 ERA and 0.90 WHIP on the season.
10-10-23 | Astros v. Twins -125 | Top | 9-1 | Loss | -125 | 29 h 59 m | Show |
Sonny Gray improved to 1-0 un the postseason, allowing five hits and two walks over 5.0 scoreless innings, as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 on Wednesday. Gray struck out six, ending the game with a 0.00 ERA and 1.40 WHIP on the season.
10-09-23 | Phillies v. Braves -142 | Top | 4-5 | Win | 100 | 22 h 27 m | Show |
Left-hander Max Fried (8-1, 2.55 ERA regular season) will start for the Braves against Philadelphia right-hander Zack Wheeler (1-0, 1.35 this postseason). Atlanta will seek to find its offense against Wheeler after managing just five singles in Game 1. That powerful offense that tied the major league record with 307 homers was shut out for the first time since May 12. Wheeler, 33, is 12-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 27 career regular-season outings against the Braves. That includes a 2-0 mark with a 3.32 ERA in three matchups against Atlanta in 2023. Ronald Acuna Jr. has smacked four homers off Wheeler. Ozzie Albies and Olson each have hit two. Fried had a forgettable Game 1 outing in last season's series with the Phillies as he was torched for six runs (four earned) and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Fried, 29, made just 14 starts this season, missing time with hamstring and forearm injuries. He also has been battling a blister on his left index finger and will be making his first appearance since Sept. 21.
10-08-23 | Twins v. Astros -135 | 6-2 | Loss | -135 | 17 h 42 m | Show
Left-hander Framber Valdez (12-11, 3.45 ERA in regular season) is the scheduled Game 2 starter for the Astros. He is 7-2 with a 3.41 ERA over 13 career postseason appearances (12 starts). Valdez earned the victory in Game 6 of the 2022 World Series after limiting the Philadelphia Phillies to one run on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings and has won three consecutive postseason starts. Valdez is 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA over seven career appearances (four starts) against the Twins. In his lone postseason appearance against Minnesota, Valdez twirled five scoreless innings of relief in Game 1 of the 2020 AL wild-card series while earning a 4-1 road victory. Right-hander Pablo Lopez (11-8, 3.66) will start Game 2 as the Twins attempt to square the best-of-five series at a game apiece. In his second career postseason start on Tuesday -- and first since Game 2 of the 2020 National League Division Series for the Miami Marlins against the Atlanta Braves -- Lopez earned a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of that AL wild-card series. He surrendered one run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Lopez faced Houston once previously while he was with the Marlins. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings while not factoring into the decision of a 7-4 victory on June 10, 2022.
10-07-23 | Diamondbacks +182 v. Dodgers | 11-2 | Win | 182 | 17 h 15 m | Show
Arizona will send right-hander Merrill Kelly to the mound in Game 1. And while he was impressive in the 2023 regular season, Kelly (12-8, 3.29 ERA) has a terrible history against the Dodgers. In 16 career regular-season starts vs. Los Angeles, he is 0-11 with a 5.49 ERA, while Betts has three home runs and a .351 on-base percentage against him. At face value, it appears to be another typical Los Angeles Dodgers playoff series ahead, with Clayton Kershaw starting in Game 1 of the National League Division Series Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Yet this matchup promises to be something new entirely. In the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year, but with one 2020 World Series title to show for it, perhaps it was time for the Dodgers to unveil something different. Los Angeles will employ a group-effort pitching strategy, with shorter starts, possible bullpen games and a "piggy-back" plan where two or more pitchers throw multiple innings each. While it sounds like a full buy-in on next-level analytics, the Dodgers instead are operating out of necessity because of injury, performance uncertainty and the arrival of several rookie pitchers getting their first taste of the playoffs.
10-07-23 | Phillies +184 v. Braves | Top | 3-0 | Win | 184 | 14 h 8 m | Show |
Atlanta Braves ace right-hander Spencer Strider has manhandled the Philadelphia Phillies in the regular season. The same didn't ring true last October in his one postseason encounter with the club. After a disastrous start in Game 3 of the 2022 National League Division Series, Strider will try to exact revenge Saturday when the top-seeded Braves host the fourth-seeded Phillies to open this best-of-five NLDS at Atlanta. Strider allowed five runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings as Philadelphia gained control of the 2022 NLDS with a 9-1 victory over Atlanta. The Phillies wrapped up the set the following night, unceremoniously sending the Braves into the offseason.
10-01-23 | Reds -115 v. Cardinals | 3-4 | Loss | -115 | 5 h 50 m | Show
Right-hander Hunter Greene (4-6, 4.71 ERA) will start for the Reds on Sunday. He allowed seven runs on eight hits -- including three homers -- in three innings at Cleveland on Tuesday. Cincinnati rallied for an 11-7 win to take him off the hook. Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas (8-13, 4.82) will try to put a positive finish on a subpar season. The right-hander earned a 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday in his most recent start after allowing the one run on five hits and two walks in seven innings. Mikolas has worked 194 1/3 innings for the depleted Cardinals this season and wants to reach the 200-inning plateau again.
10-01-23 | Cubs -109 v. Brewers | 0-4 | Loss | -109 | 5 h 51 m | Show
The Cubs are scheduled to start ace Justin Steele (16-5, 3.05 ERA) on Sunday to close his breakout season. He earned his first All-Star nod in 2023 and put himself in the conversation for the NL Cy Young Award. However, the third-year left-hander might be showing the effects of making a career-high 30 starts and pitching 173 1/3 innings by going 0-2 with a 9.42 ERA in his last three starts. After giving up six earned runs in back-to-back outings, Steele allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday. The Cubs, however, squandered a 6-0 lead in their 7-6 loss at Atlanta. Steele, though, yielded just three runs and struck out 21 through 18 innings in going 1-0 over three starts vs. Milwaukee this season.
10-01-23 | Dodgers -154 v. Giants | Top | 5-2 | Win | 100 | 5 h 53 m | Show |
Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller (11-4, 3.89 ERA), who has won his past two road starts against the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies, allowing a total of five runs in 12 2/3 innings. The rookie suffered his first big-league loss in a 15-0 shellacking at home to the Giants in June, bombed for seven runs in 5 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old served up a three-run homer to LaMonte Wade Jr. in the loss. It's the only time he's faced the Giants. Dodgers batters can expect to see a Giants rookie for the third straight day as left-hander Kyle Harrison (1-1, 4.85) has drawn the start. After a stellar opening to his big-league debut in August, when he went 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in two starts, the prized prospect has yet to win in September, going 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in four starts. The 22-year-old faced the Dodgers on the road in his most recent start on Sept. 21, limiting them to two runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 7-2 loss. J.D. Martinez had a homer off him in the game.
09-30-23 | Cubs -120 v. Brewers | 10-6 | Win | 100 | 4 h 8 m | Show
Rookie left-hander Jordan Wicks (4-1, 3.00 ERA) will be tasked with helping Chicago live to see another day when he makes his seventh major league start of the season on Saturday. In his most recent outing, Wicks earned a win against the Colorado Rockies pn Sunday, when he surrendered three runs on four hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out three. Wicks has never faced the Brewers. Milwaukee will give the ball to left-hander Eric Lauer (4-5, 5.48 ERA), who will be making his first start since missing four months with a shoulder injury. He last pitched May 20, when he gave up six runs on six hits -- including three homers -- in three-plus innings during an 8-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburgh, Fla. He walked two and fanned two. In nine career appearances (eight starts) against the Cubs, Lauer is 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 42 innings. He beat Chicago on April 2, when he threw 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball.
09-28-23 | Dodgers -199 v. Rockies | Top | 5-14 | Loss | -199 | 4 h 5 m | Show |
On Thursday, Los Angeles will send left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (8-6, 3.78 ERA) to the mound against Colorado right-hander Chris Flexen (1-8, 7.01). Yarbrough has pitched mainly out of the bullpen since he was acquired from Kansas City on Aug. 1. He is 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 10 appearances -- one start -- with the Dodgers and has faced the Rockies (57-101) twice in his career. He is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA against them and most recently faced them on Aug. 10 when he tossed three scoreless innings. Yarbrough's ability to start or come out of the bullpen has given Roberts flexibility with how he uses him.
09-28-23 | Cubs +127 v. Braves | 3-5 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 39 m | Show
The starting pitchers for Thursday's game will be Chicago's Marcus Stroman (10-8, 3.88 ERA) against rookie AJ Smith-Shawver (1-0, 4.57). Stroman will make his fourth appearance and second start since he came off the injured list. He was sidelined from Aug. 2-Sept. 15 with right hip inflammation. In his last start on Saturday against Colorado, Stroman recorded a no-decision after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings.
09-27-23 | Diamondbacks v. White Sox +165 | Top | 3-0 | Loss | -100 | 12 h 35 m | Show |
Brandon Pfaadt fell to 2-9, allowing six runs - five earned - on eight hits in 4.1 innings, as the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the New York Yankees 7-1 on Friday. Pfaadt struck out eight, ending the game with a 6.08 ERA and 1.44 WHIP on the season. I'll go against the devil I know rather than the one I don't pitching for Chicago.
09-26-23 | Astros v. Mariners -140 | 2-6 | Win | 100 | 19 h 57 m | Show
The Tuesday game is scheduled to feature a matchup of right-handers, Houston's Cristian Javier (9-4, 4.64 ERA) and Seattle's George Kirby (11-10, 3.58). Javier is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA over his past five starts. He didn't get a decision on Wednesday in the Astros' 2-1 victory against visiting the Baltimore Orioles despite giving up just one run on three hits over five innings. He issued two walks and logged a season-high-tying 11 strikeouts. Javier is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in eight career appearances (five starts) against the Mariners. He pitched well but didn't get a decision on May 5 in Seattle in his only meeting with the Mariners this season. Javier went seven innings and allowed three runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in the Astros' 6-4 victory. Kirby earned his first victory since Aug. 5 with a 6-3 decision on Wednesday at Oakland. He gave up three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Kirby is 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in two career starts against the Astros. He beat them 5-1 on July 6 in Houston with 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball.
09-26-23 | Cubs v. Braves -130 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 100 | 16 h 8 m | Show |
The pitching matchup in the series opener features Atlanta right-hander Bryce Elder (12-4, 3.63) against Chicago lefty Justin Steele (16-5, 3.00). Each one is coming off a shaky appearance. Elder lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his last start on Wednesday against Philadelphia. He allowed four runs on three hits, two of them homers, and walked a season-high five with no strikeouts. Elder bounces back in this one.
09-25-23 | Padres v. Giants +115 | Top | 1-2 | Win | 115 | 5 h 23 m | Show |
Each team will have its ace going in the series opener, with Padres left-hander Blake Snell (14-9, 2.33 ERA) opposing Giants righty Logan Webb (10-13, 3.35). Snell has more at stake this week than just a longshot's bid for the playoffs. He has pitched himself into the thick of the NL Cy Young Award race by going unbeaten in his last five starts, running off four straight wins with a 0.56 ERA. He hasn't allowed a run in either of his last two outings, shutting out the Dodgers on one hit over six innings, then throwing no-hit ball over seven innings against the Colorado Rockies last Tuesday. The 30-year-old has dominated the Giants in two previous matchups this season, allowing no runs and a total of six hits over 12 innings in 10-0 and 6-1 wins. He struck out 19 in those games. He's 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA in eight career starts against the Giants. Webb has yet to face the Padres this season, leaving his career mark against them at 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA in nine head-to-heads, including eight starts. The 26-year-old is coming off a 7-1 loss at Arizona last Wednesday in which he allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings.
09-25-23 | Astros v. Mariners -122 | 5-1 | Loss | -122 | 5 h 21 m | Show
Monday's series opener features a heavyweight matchup of right-handers, with Houston's Justin Verlander (11-8, 3.44 ERA) set to go up against Seattle's Luis Castillo (14-7, 3.06). Verlander, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, is 5-3 in nine starts with the Astros since being re-acquired from the New York Mets at the trade deadline. He's 21-10 with a 3.09 ERA in 37 career starts against Seattle. Castillo has won his past eight decisions, including a 7-2 victory at Oakland last Tuesday when he allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings, with eight strikeouts. Castillo is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three previous starts against the Astros. He beat them 10-1 on July 7 in Houston, allowing one unearned run over seven innings.
09-25-23 | Rangers -177 v. Angels | Top | 5-1 | Win | 100 | 5 h 25 m | Show |
The Texas Rangers' magic number is five to earn their first playoff berth since 2016 as they begin a season-ending seven-game road trip on Monday night in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. Texas (87-68) holds a 2 1/2-game lead over slumping Houston (85-71) in the American League West and is three games in front of Seattle (84-71) after sweeping the Mariners over the weekend in Arlington. The three teams, along with Toronto (87-69), are also in a battle for the three American League wild-card playoff spots. After playing three games with the fourth-place Angels (70-86), who are 2-9 in their last 11 games, the Rangers finish with a four-game series at Seattle that could have major playoff implications. The Mariners, who are 1-8 against the Rangers this season, begin a three-game make-it-or-break-it series with the Astros on Monday in Seattle. With the head-to-head tiebreaker already in hand against Seattle, Texas would seem to be in good shape heading into the final week of the regular season.
09-22-23 | Giants +160 v. Dodgers | 5-1 | Win | 160 | 7 h 13 m | Show
The Giants will send left-hander Sean Manaea (6-6, 4.82 ERA) to the mound on Friday. Manaea will be making his third start since returning to the rotation, giving up three runs over 5 1/3 innings in a win against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. In nine career appearances (six starts) against the Dodgers, he is 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA in 35 innings. The Dodgers will mix and match on the mound Friday, using an alternative plan just as manager Dave Roberts has suggested he might do on occasion in the playoffs. Caleb Ferguson (7-3, 2.56) will be the opener, while fellow left-hander Ryan Yarbrough also will pick up some innings. Los Angeles has just three set starters heading into the playoffs in Bobby Miller, Lance Lynn and Clayton Kershaw. When it comes to Lynn and Kershaw, those veterans might be on moderate pitch counts with the bullpen doing heavy lifting on those days. Pitchers like Yarbrough, Emmet Sheehan and Ryan Pepiot might be asked to pick up as many as three innings per appearance.
09-22-23 | Pirates v. Reds -165 | Top | 7-5 | Loss | -165 | 4 h 40 m | Show |
Rookie left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-5, 3.68 ERA) will start for the Reds in Friday's series opener, making his 20th start of the season. The 24-year-old labored in his last start, needing 91 pitches to complete just 3 2/3 innings while allowing two runs and six hits against the New York Mets last Saturday. Cincinnati pulled out a 3-2 win as Abbott received a no-decision. In five starts since beating Cleveland on Aug. 16, Abbott is 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA. He allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings back on Aug. 11 to earn a victory in his only career start against Pittsburgh. The Pirates (72-81) come to Cincinnati looking to continue playing the role of spoiler. One day after being on the wrong end of a 14-1 rout against the Cubs, Pittsburgh bounced back with a 13-7 win on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Pirates took the rubber match, 8-6.
09-20-23 | Guardians -141 v. Royals | Top | 2-6 | Loss | -141 | 1 h 43 m | Show |

Gallen struck out four, ending the game with a 3.50 ERA and 1.11 WHIP on the season. Expect a bounceback effort tonight.

09-17-23 | Red Sox v. Blue Jays -136 | Top | 2-3 | Win | 100 | 4 h 39 m | Show |
The Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday will seek a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox and a winning 10-game homestand. The Blue Jays (82-67) have won the first two games against the Red Sox (74-75) after a 4-3, 13-inning victory Saturday. Toronto is 5-4 on its homestand and currently holds the third and final wild-card spot in the American League. The Red Sox have lost three in a row and 14 of their past 20 games.
09-16-23 | Tigers v. Angels +103 | Top | 5-4 | Loss | -100 | 13 h 45 m | Show |
Tyler Anderson improved to 6-6, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk in 8.0 innings, as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Cleveland Guardians 6-2 on Saturday. Anderson struck out four, ending the game with a 5.36 ERA and 1.48 WHIP on the season.
09-16-23 | Rangers v. Guardians -110 | 1-2 | Win | 100 | 10 h 51 m | Show
Texas shortstop Corey Seager is riding a six-game hitting streak. He has recorded an extra-base hit in five of those games, and 11 of his past 16 hits overall have gone for extra bases (six doubles, five homers). Seager will look to continue that success against Cleveland rookie right-hander Tanner Bibee (10-4, 3.03 ERA). Bibee has yielded just two earned runs in each of his past four outings but has just one win to show for it. He was saddled with a hard-luck loss on Sunday despite allowing only two hits and striking out eight in seven innings during a 2-1 setback to the Los Angeles Angels. Two balk calls in the third inning contributed to the undoing of Bibee. The 24-year-old, however, retired the last 14 batters he faced and did not issue a walk. Bibee settled for a no-decision in his lone encounter against Texas. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in six innings on July 16. Rangers right-hander Dane Dunning (10-6, 3.91 ERA) recorded his first win since Aug. 2 after allowing three runs in six innings en route to a 10-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
09-15-23 | Tigers v. Angels +109 | 11-2 | Loss | -100 | 8 h 22 m | Show
Griffin Canning (7-6, 4.34 ERA) will start the series opener for the Angels (68-79). He lost his past two starts, including an outing against the Cleveland Guardians on Sept. 6, when he allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He will be opposed by Tarik Skubal (5-4, 3.47 ERA), who has won both of his September starts. The left-hander held the Chicago White Sox to two runs in seven innings on Sept. 3, then blanked the White Sox for five innings while recording nine strikeouts on Saturday. Skubal was mad at himself for requiring 95 pitches to get 15 outs.
09-14-23 | Rays v. Orioles -130 | Top | 4-3 | Loss | -130 | 16 h 57 m | Show |
Kyle Bradish improved to 11-6, allowing two runs on four hits in 6.0 innings, as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 11-2 on Friday. Bradish struck out nine, ending the game with a 3.03 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on the season.

09-12-23 | Angels v. Mariners -187 | 0-8 | Win | 100 | 12 h 27 m | Show
Tuesday's pitching matchup will feature Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (7-12, 4.31 ERA) against Mariners rookie right-hander Bryan Woo (2-4, 4.50). Sandoval has lost his past two starts, including 10-3 Wednesday against Baltimore when he allowed seven runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in five innings. Sandoval is 0-4 with a 3.18 ERA in eight career starts against the Mariners. He lost to visiting Seattle on June 10 when he allowed five runs on 10 hits over five innings. Woo has had a couple of extra days off since his last start, a defeat Sept. 4 at Cincinnati when he gave up five runs on four hits in five innings. Woo is 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in two lifetime starts covering 10 2/3 innings against the Angels.
09-11-23 | Braves -154 v. Phillies | Top | 10-8 | Win | 100 | 1 h 37 m | Show |
The Atlanta Braves became the first team in the majors to clinch a postseason berth on Sunday, but manager Brian Snitker is already focused on the next task at hand. The Braves can take another step toward their sixth straight National League East title when they begin a four-game series against the host Philadelphia Phillies with a doubleheader on Monday. Atlanta (93-49) reduced its magic number to clinch the NL East to six after taking two of three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, including the playoff-clinching 5-2 victory on Sunday.
09-10-23 | Orioles -105 v. Red Sox | Top | 3-7 | Loss | -105 | 3 h 7 m | Show |
The visiting Baltimore Orioles will attempt to sweep the Boston Red Sox and extend their winning streak to eight games when the teams wrap up a three-game series Sunday. The Orioles opened the series with an 11-2 victory on Friday night and won 13-12 on Saturday. The Red Sox collected 23 hits in Saturday's loss but stranded runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth.
09-10-23 | Mariners v. Rays -133 | Top | 3-6 | Win | 100 | 2 h 12 m | Show |
Right-hander Bryce Miller (8-4, 3.83 ERA) will get the nod in the series finale on Sunday. Logan Gilbert will pitch Monday against the Los Angeles Angels, while Bryan Woo was pushed back three days to start on Tuesday. The Rays will counter with right-hander Zach Eflin (13-8, 3.47), who had mixed results against the Boston Red Sox last Tuesday. He gave up three runs over five innings while throwing 89 pitches in a no-decision.
09-08-23 | Mariners -105 v. Rays | Top | 4-7 | Loss | -105 | 9 h 47 m | Show |
Seattle is scheduled to start All-Star right-hander George Kirby (10-9, 3.39 ERA). Tampa Bay will counter with rookie right-hander Taj Bradley (5-7, 5.42 ERA). On May 8, 2022, Kirby made his major league debut against the Rays, throwing six shutout innings while striking out seven in a no-decision. He has faced Tampa Bay only once since, when he pitched seven innings of two-run ball this year in a win on July 1. The 25-year-old is one of the top young starters in the American League, and the former first-round pick from Elon will be making his 27th start of the year. In 159 1/3 innings, Kirby has 145 strikeouts. Kirby is seeking his first victory since Aug. 5, when he defeated the Los Angeles Angels. In his start following that seven-inning outing, the right-hander threw nine shutout innings, yielding just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in a no-decision against the Baltimore Orioles. Kirby has struggled in his past three starts, giving up 11 runs, 10 earned, in 14 2/3 innings (6.14 ERA). In his latest outing, a loss to the New York Mets on Sunday, Kirby surrendered four runs (three earned) in three innings. Bradley is seeking his first victory since June 21 against the Orioles. In his past seven starts, he is 0-4 with a 7.92 ERA. The results haven't always been favorable for Bradley, but the rookie has shown the ability to pick up strikeouts. In 79 2/3 innings, he has fanned 106. On Sunday, Bradley threw five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, in a no-decision against the Cleveland Guardians. He struck out seven but walked five.
09-08-23 | White Sox v. Tigers -135 | Top | 6-0 | Loss | -135 | 9 h 39 m | Show |
Rookie right-hander Reese Olson (3-6, 4.65 ERA) will start the series opener on Friday. The 24-year-old delivered the best performance of his young career on Saturday, tossing seven scoreless innings and limiting the White Sox to four hits. He also didn't walk a batter, though he only recorded one strikeout. It was a stark contrast to his previous start against the New York Yankees, when he walked four and struck out a career-best 10 batters. Olson's mound opponent will once again be Mike Clevinger (6-7, 3.90). The right-hander endured his worst outing of the season on Saturday, giving up eight hits and 12 runs in four innings during Detroit's 10-0 victory. Clevinger had been placed on waivers and gone unclaimed prior to that start. He didn't use that as an excuse for his poor outing.
09-07-23 | Guardians +150 v. Angels | 2-3 | Loss | -100 | 12 h 50 m | Show
The Guardians will send Cal Quantrill (2-6, 6.16 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. The veteran right-hander was sidelined for nearly two months because of shoulder inflammation before returning to action on Friday. He threw six innings and yielded two runs on two hits in a no-decision against the Tampa Bay Rays. Quantrill is 1-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five career appearances (four starts) against the Angels. He faced Los Angeles on May 13 in Cleveland and wasn't involved in the decision after throwing six innings of three-run ball. Nevin said the Angels' plan for Thursday would be "some sort of a bullpen game" because he was unsure if right-hander Chase Silseth (4-1, 4.10 ERA) would be ready to start. Silseth was hit in the back of the head by an errant throw on Aug. 26 from a teammate in a game against the New York Mets.
09-07-23 | Diamondbacks +148 v. Cubs | Top | 6-2 | Win | 148 | 10 h 59 m | Show |
The Cubs will hand the ball to another rookie in the series opener against Arizona. Javier Assad (3-2, 2.69 ERA) is set to make his 26th appearance and eighth start of the season. Assad went 2-0 with a 2.48 ERA in five starts in August before throwing eight shutout innings in his most recent outing on Saturday at Cincinnati. He scattered seven hits, struck out seven and walked one but did not earn a decision in Chicago's 2-1 loss. Assad was in good position for a victory when Chicago took a 1-0 lead into the ninth, but the Reds scored two runs to walk it off. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo announced after the Wednesday game that right-hander Ryne Nelson would be recalled from Reno to make the start on Thursday. Nelson (6-7, 5.47 ERA) last pitched for the Diamondbacks on Aug. 11, when he allowed six runs and seven hits in three innings during a 10-5 loss to the visiting San Diego Padres. He was optioned to the minors two days later.
09-05-23 | Rockies v. Diamondbacks -198 | 3-2 | Loss | -198 | 19 h 4 m | Show
Kyle Freeland fell to 5-14, allowing seven runs - six earned - on eight hits and one walk in 5.2 innings, as the Colorado Rockies lost to the Atlanta Braves 7-3 on Wednesday. Freeland struck out three, ending the game with a 5.18 ERA and 1.47 WHIP on the season. I don't want anything to do with Freeland or the Rockies right now.
09-05-23 | Red Sox v. Rays -152 | Top | 6-8 | Win | 100 | 16 h 1 m | Show |
The pitching matchup Tuesday night will feature a pair of native Floridians, Boston's Kutter Crawford and Tampa Bay's Zach Eflin. A product of the lakeside town of Okeechobee, Crawford (6-7, 4.08 ERA) will appear in his 27th game and make his 19th start of the year. The right-hander surrendered six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings and absorbed a 7-4 loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday. Before the start, Cora said Crawford had progressed tremendously from 2022 (3-6, 5.47 in 21 games).
09-05-23 | Brewers -178 v. Pirates | Top | 7-3 | Win | 100 | 16 h 2 m | Show |
The Milwaukee Brewers can't afford to lose many games, especially against non-contending teams such as the Pittsburgh Pirates, if they expect to hold onto first place in the National League Central. The visiting Brewers (76-61) took a 4-2 loss to the Pirates (64-74) in the opener of a three-game series Monday, dropping Milwaukee's lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs to 2 1/2 games. Things appeared to line up well for Milwaukee in this series. The Brewers' three strongest starters -- former NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff, and Freddy Peralta, the NL pitcher of the month for August -- were scheduled to face the Pirates. Pittsburgh, which is scrambling to field a rotation, originally did not have a projected starter for any of the three games.
09-04-23 | Astros v. Rangers -105 | Top | 13-6 | Loss | -105 | 3 h 22 m | Show |
Left-hander Andrew Heaney (9-6, 4.16 ERA), who went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA in six August starts, will start the series opener for the Rangers and be opposed by rookie right-hander J.P. France (10-5, 3.49). Heaney is 4-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 14 career starts against Houston. He is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts against Houston this season, allowing just nine hits and three runs over 15 innings while striking out 15 in those contests. France won his only career start against Texas on July 25, allowing one unearned run on five hits over seven innings while striking out three. The Astros limp into the contest after getting swept in a three-game series by the New York Yankees for the first time since Sept. 27-29, 2013. The Yankees completed the sweep with a 6-1 win on Sunday night at Minute Maid Park.
09-03-23 | Phillies v. Brewers +102 | Top | 4-2 | Loss | -100 | 11 h 46 m | Show |
Wade Miley improved to 7-3, allowing two runs on four hits in 6.0 innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Monday. Miley struck out one, ending the game with a 3.17 ERA and 1.14 WHIP on the season. We'll take Miley here.
09-03-23 | Cubs v. Reds +115 | Top | 15-7 | Loss | -100 | 10 h 57 m | Show |
Jameson Taillon fell to 7-9, allowing five runs - four earned - on nine hits in 6.0 innings, as the Chicago Cubs lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 on Monday. Taillon struck out six, ending the game with a 5.62 ERA and 1.36 WHIP on the season. I'll take my chances with the plus money.
09-01-23 | Giants v. Padres -128 | Top | 3-7 | Win | 100 | 12 h 30 m | Show |
Right-hander Tristan Beck (3-2, 3.52 ERA) will open for the Giants against Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (10-2, 2.84). Beck made his first start against the visiting Atlanta Braves on Sunday. He gave up three runs on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. He threw 70 pitches, his second-highest total on the season. Wacha will be making his fourth start since returning from the injured list after missing six weeks with shoulder fatigue. After giving up one run over 10 1/3 innings in back-to-back wins in his first two starts back, the National League's Pitcher of the Month in May yielded four runs on four hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Milwaukee on Sunday. Wacha has made one start against the Giants this season, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks in six innings during a no-decision on June 19 at San Francisco. Wacha has a 2-0 career record against the Giants in eight starts with a 1.64 ERA, a 1.091 WHIP and a .219 opponents' batting average in 44 innings.
09-01-23 | Rays v. Guardians +162 | 2-3 | Win | 162 | 9 h 9 m | Show
The Rays will turn to Tyler Glasnow (7-4, 3.12 ERA) in the series opener against Cal Quantrill (2-6, 6.45) of the Guardians in a battle of right-handers. Quantrill, who has been sidelined by an ailing shoulder, is expected to return from the 15-day injured list to make the start. Glasnow, 30, answered a dismal performance with a sterling one on Saturday to improve to 5-1 in his last seven outings. After allowing seven runs (five earned) in a setback to the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 19, Glasnow took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning versus the New York Yankees. He surrendered a single to DJ LeMahieu with one out in the sixth before exiting after the inning, marking his career-best seventh consecutive start in which he pitched at least six frames. Glasnow is 0-2 with a 2.12 ERA in three career starts against the Guardians. Quantrill, 28, is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three career appearances against Tampa Bay.
08-31-23 | Braves -129 v. Dodgers | Top | 8-7 | Win | 100 | 13 h 42 m | Show |
Los Angeles will send right-hander Lance Lynn (10-9, 5.56 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. Lynn has gone 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in five starts since joining the Dodgers from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline. In seven career starts against the Braves, Lynn is 4-3 with a 3.32 ERA. He faced Atlanta on July 15 with the White Sox, and he got a win despite yielding four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Lynn will have to contend with an Atlanta offense that hit three home runs against the Rockies on Wednesday and already has a franchise-record 250 home runs on the season. It isn't even September. And Lynn leads the majors with 34 home runs allowed. The Braves will send right-hander Spencer Strider (15-4, 3.46 ERA) to the mound on Thursday. Strider is 4-1 in five August starts with a 2.37 ERA. He has been even better in his past three outings, going 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA while pitching seven innings each time. He is tied for the major league lead in wins. Strider faced the Dodgers on May 23 and gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings while absorbing the loss. He struck out 11 and walked three. In his only other start against Los Angeles, Strider went six scoreless innings last season in a no-decision. While the Dodgers are having one of the best months in franchise history, the Braves have gone an impressive 20-8 in August.
08-31-23 | Giants v. Padres -125 | Top | 7-2 | Loss | -125 | 12 h 23 m | Show |
The teams' four-game series opens Thursday night with a pair of right-handers making rare starts. Jakob Junis (4-3, 4.09 ERA in 35 appearances and three starts) will open for the Giants against the Padres' Pedro Avila (0-1, 2.63 ERA in eight appearances, two starts). Avila is making his second straight start. He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings at Milwaukee on Saturday to take the loss. One of Avila's three previous major league starts came in his lone outing against the Giants. He gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in four innings during a loss on Oct. 1, 2021. Junis has appeared in relief twice since making back-to-back starts on Aug. 15 and 20. He has made three relief appearances against the Padres this season, including one in Mexico City. In those outings, he gave up 11 runs on 16 hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in eight innings for a 12.38 ERA. Five of the hits were home runs, four of those occurring in Mexico City. Junis if 1-0 lifetime against the Padres with a 9.26 ERA and a 1.714 WHIP in six games (three starts).
08-30-23 | Rangers v. Mets +140 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 140 | 9 h 13 m | Show |
Dane Dunning (9-6, 3.36 ERA) is slated to start for the Rangers against fellow right-hander Denyi Reyes (0-2, 7.50). The Rangers pieced together another narrow win on Tuesday, when Mitch Garver homered to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning and scored what proved to be the decisive run in the ninth as Texas edged the Mets 2-1. Reyes, who will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse prior to the Wednesday game, last pitched for the Mets on Aug. 12. In that game, he took the defeat after giving up five runs over 4 2/3 innings as New York lost 21-3 to the Atlanta Braves in the first game of a doubleheader. He has never faced the Rangers.
08-30-23 | Astros -133 v. Red Sox | 7-4 | Win | 100 | 7 h 49 m | Show
Right-hander Kutter Crawford (6-6, 3.65 ERA) will look to give the Red Sox a much-needed strong start on Wednesday. Crawford struck out seven and allowed just two runs on four hits across five innings in a no-decision against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. In his lone career start vs. Houston, Crawford allowed just one run on seven hits across six innings in a victory on Aug. 2, 2022. Left-hander Framber Valdez (9-9, 3.40 ERA) will take the mound for Houston in the series finale. Valdez no-hit the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 1 before allowing 16 runs (15 earned) on 24 hits over his next three starts, but he bounced back for seven no-hit innings on Friday in a no-decision at Detroit. Valdez worked around five walks and a hit batter vs. the Tigers.
08-29-23 | Reds v. Giants -153 | 1-6 | Win | 100 | 12 h 20 m | Show
Kyle Harrison won a head-to-head with Andrew Abbott in a duel of highly regarded rookie left-handers in the series opener in San Francisco on Monday, with the Giants moving a game ahead of the Reds in the wild-card standings with a 4-1 home win. Both teams are chasing the third NL wild-card spot, with the Giants a half-game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks entering play Tuesday. Giants manager Gabe Kapler was still buzzing about his 22-year-old rookie pitcher's home debut well after the final pitch had been thrown on an 11-strikeout effort. The skipper left the ballpark hopeful of a carryover effect.
08-26-23 | Dodgers v. Red Sox +120 | Top | 5-8 | Win | 120 | 7 h 24 m | Show |
08-25-23 | Cubs -114 v. Pirates | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -114 | 7 h 28 m | Show |
On Friday, Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 3.83 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller (10-8, 4.22). Hendricks has gone 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA over his past three starts. On Sunday, he limited the Kansas City Royals to one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and one walk, en route to a 4-3 win. Keller might be rounding back into the early-season form that established him as Pittsburgh's ace. The All-Star lost five decisions in a row from July 3-Aug. 3. Since then, he had two no-decisions followed by a win his last time out, on Saturday at Minnesota. He has a 3.18 ERA over those three games. Against the Twins, he gave up two runs and seven hits while striking out 12 and walking one in six innings for his first win since June 28. He finished one strikeout shy of his career best. Keller is 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA in nine career games, eight of them starts, against the Cubs. He has not faced them this year.
08-24-23 | Cubs -160 v. Pirates | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 10 h 30 m | Show
Chicago left-hander Justin Steele (14-3, 2.80 ERA) is scheduled to start the series opener, while Pittsburgh had yet to name a starter. In his past 10 outings, Steele has eight quality starts, going 7-1 with a 2.90 ERA. Most recently, he allowed two runs on six hits in six innings in a win against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. He didn't issue a walk while striking out seven.
08-23-23 | Reds -110 v. Angels | Top | 7-3 | Win | 100 | 12 h 20 m | Show |
The Reds will go with with their most consistent pitcher this season, rookie Andrew Abbott (8-3, 2.99 ERA). The left-hander allowed six hits and two runs over five innings in his most recent start, a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 16. The Angels will give the ball to lefty Reid Detmers (3-9, 4.93 ERA) in the second game. On Aug. 16 at Texas, Detmers had the strongest outing of his season when he carried a no-hitter through 7 1/3 innings before Marcus Semien doubled.
08-23-23 | Blue Jays v. Orioles +114 | 0-7 | Win | 114 | 10 h 52 m | Show
Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman looks for a bounce-back outing when the Toronto Blue Jays visit the Baltimore Orioles in the second of a three-game series Wednesday night. The Blue Jays won 6-3 in 10 innings Tuesday night, their third straight win. After going 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA over three starts, Gausman (9-7, 3.24 ERA) allowed seven runs - five earned - in 5 1/3 innings of a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 16. He walked three and struck out four. The Orioles will counter with right-hander Jack Flaherty (8-8, 4.73 ERA overall; 1-2, 7.07 with Baltimore), who makes his fourth start since being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals. Flaherty is also looking for a bounce-back effort after being pounded for seven runs on three hits and four walks in three innings of a loss to the San Diego Padres in his last start. He walked three in a row during the first inning while allowing five runs.
08-23-23 | Twins v. Brewers -133 | Top | 7-8 | Win | 100 | 5 h 2 m | Show |
The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to ace right-hander Corbin Burnes to extend their winning streak when they host the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a two-game interleague series between division leaders. Burnes (9-6, 3.43 ERA) will be opposed by right-hander Kenta Maeda (3-7, 4.13). Milwaukee took the opener 7-3 on Tuesday night, bunching six singles for a five-run rally in the sixth inning. The Brewers, returning home after a 6-3 road trip, won their fourth straight to move a season-high 12 games above .500.
08-22-23 | Cardinals v. Pirates -130 | Top | 3-6 | Win | 100 | 7 h 51 m | Show |
On Tuesday, right-handers Adam Wainwright (3-8, 8.42 ERA) of St. Louis and Johan Oviedo (6-13, 4.55) of Pittsburgh are scheduled to start. Wainwright is coming off a quality start - three runs allowed in six innings Thursday against the New York Mets - on the heels of his shortest career start, when he lasted just one inning. In fact, he had given up 15 earned runs in four-plus innings over two outings before the Mets game. So the veteran, who is expected to retire at the end of the season, had a frank talk before his most recent outing -- with himself.
08-21-23 | Marlins v. Padres -178 | 2-6 | Win | 100 | 10 h 55 m | Show
But now Miami has lost four of its last five games. The Marlins will turn to former Padres' left-hander Ryan Weathers (1-7, 6.89 ERA) to start Monday. Weathers is 0-1 in one appearance since going to the Marlins in an Aug. 1 trade for first baseman/designated hitter Garrett Cooper and relief pitcher Sean Reynolds. He hasn't pitched since giving up six runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings at Texas on Aug. 5. Weathers was 0-3 with an 8.79 ERA in four starts for the Padres at Petco Park this season. Monday would normally have been left-hander Jesus Luzardo's turn in the rotation. But he has been pushed back to Tuesday after going 0-3 with a 10.59 ERA in his last four starts. He has allowed 21 runs (20 earned) in 17 innings in that span and hasn't worked more than 5 1/3 innings during any of those outings. The Padres will counter with right-hander Michael Wacha (9-2, 2.68 ERA), who has been on a roll over the better part of the last three-plus months. Since May 2, Wacha is 7-1 with a 1.10 ERA over his last 11 starts, including his most recent outing against Baltimore last Tuesday. He allowed three hits in five scoreless innings against the Orioles, walking one and striking out five to earn the win. Wacha is 3-1 with a 4.05 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins.
08-20-23 | Pirates v. Twins -127 | Top | 0-2 | Win | 100 | 3 h 41 m | Show |
The Minnesota Twins will turn to left-hander Dallas Keuchel in the rubber match of their three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. It will be just the third start of the season for the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner, who signed a minor league contract with the Twins on June 22. Keuchel (0-1, 9.45 ERA) was solid in his first start, a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 6 at Target Field. He allowed one run on eight hits over five innings. Ryan Borucki (1-0, 4.07) will make his second start of the season on Sunday. Borucki is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA in five career games (one start) against the Twins. He allowed one run on one hit in one inning of relief in Friday's 5-1 series opening loss.
08-20-23 | Red Sox v. Yankees -103 | Top | 6-5 | Loss | -103 | 2 h 20 m | Show |
New York's Clarke Schmidt (8-7, 4.76 ERA) will attempt to rebound from a loss after allowing a career-worst eight runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings during Monday's 11-3 loss at Atlanta. Before his rough start against the Braves, Schmidt had allowed three runs or less in 15 straight starts dating to May 19. Schmidt is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA in six career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox. He started against Boston in consecutive outings on June 11 and 18 when he allowed a combined three runs on nine hits in 10 innings. Fellow right-hander Josh Winckowski (3-1, 3.20) will serve as the opener for the first time before Nick Pivetta follows as a bulk reliever. Pivetta is 4-3 with a 5.88 ERA in 11 starts and 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA in 18 relief appearances this season. He is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 11 career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. Pivetta is 1-0 and has yet to allow a run in three relief appearances spanning 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees this year
08-19-23 | Royals v. Cubs -185 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 4 h 3 m | Show |
The Chicago Cubs are undefeated in five straight games with ace Justin Steele on the mound. Amid a tight postseason race, the host Cubs need that trend to continue while trying to avoid a second straight loss to the pesky Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Scoring hasn't been a problem in Steele's past five starts. The Cubs have totaled 45 runs during that stretch, as he has gone 4-0. However, the left-hander has yielded three earned runs in each of his last three starts. Steele (13-3, 2.79 ERA) has also failed to complete six innings in two consecutive outings. Most recently, in a no-decision on Aug. 12 at Toronto, he yielded six hits and struck out seven over five innings during Chicago's 5-4 victory. In his third big-league season, Steele ranked among the major league leaders in wins, ERA and WHIP (1.17), and he has already thrown a career-high 126 innings.
08-18-23 | Diamondbacks +155 v. Padres | Top | 0-4 | Loss | -100 | 10 h 7 m | Show |
Brandon Pfaadt is considered the Arizona Diamondbacks' No. 1 pitching prospect, but it hasn't been an easy season for the 24-year-old rookie. The 6-foot-4 right-hander is in his third tour with the Diamondbacks this year, and he is still looking for his first major league win after 11 starts. Pfaadt is 0-6 with a 6.91 ERA. However, if Pfaadt breaks through on Friday in a rematch against San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo, the Diamondbacks would have their first four-game winning streak since they won six straight games from June 6-12. The Padres have lost each of the last four games started by Lugo, the former Mets swingman who is 0-2 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.209 WHIP during that stretch. A large part of the problem is that Lugo has given up five homers in that span and at least one home run in six straight starts after allowing just six homers in his first 12 starts. The Padres are just 6-12 in Lugo's starts this year. Arizona is 5-6 when Pfaadt starts.
08-18-23 | Red Sox v. Yankees -105 | 8-3 | Loss | -105 | 9 h 6 m | Show
After Chris Sale struggled in his second start off the injured list, the Red Sox open the series with Brayan Bello (8-7, 3.81 ERA), who owns a 5.67 ERA in six starts since the break. Bello last pitched in a 6-2 loss to Detroit last Saturday when he allowed four runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. Bello is 1-2 with a 1.44 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees, who are hitting .198 against him. He last faced the Yankees on June 18 in Boston where he pitched seven innings of one-run ball. New York did not announce a starter and could go with an opener before using rookie Jhony Brito as a bulk reliever. Brito is 4-5 with a 4.76 ERA in 15 games. In his three relief outings, he is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and pitched five innings in Miami last Saturday when he relieved Michael King.
08-17-23 | Brewers +133 v. Dodgers | 0-1 | Loss | -100 | 12 h 8 m | Show
On a roll since the start of July, Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes will now work on his spotty history against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Burnes (9-6, 3.60 ERA) will face the Dodgers on Thursday in the finale of a three-game series as the Brewers look to avoid the sweep following a 7-1 defeat at Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Dodgers extended their season-best winning streak to 10 games. Dodgers right-hander Lance Lynn (9-9, 5.88 ERA) takes the mound on Thursday, having posted a 3-0 record with a 2.00 ERA in three starts with his new club. Lynn was acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline. Lynn leads the majors with 32 home runs allowed and has given up four long balls with the Dodgers, though he held the visiting Colorado Rockies in the park on Friday. He yielded just one unearned run in five innings while striking out nine in that contest. Lynn has dominated the Brewers in his career, going 11-3 with a 2.16 ERA in 21 outings (17 starts). He logged 117 strikeouts in 108 1/3 innings during those contests.
08-17-23 | Mets v. Cardinals +118 | Top | 4-2 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 20 m | Show |
In his past two starts, Wainwright (3-7, 8.78 ERA) retired just 12 batters while allowing 15 runs on 18 hits. The Cardinals will start him Thursday against the visiting New York Mets in the opener of a four-game series. However, this is the last opportunity team management is promising him. The Mets will counter Wainwright with former Cardinals hurler Jose Quintana (0-4, 3.03 ERA), who will make his sixth start since recovering from rib surgery. He allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of five starts this season. Quintana is 5-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 12 career starts against the Cardinals.
08-17-23 | Red Sox v. Nationals +167 | Top | 7-10 | Win | 167 | 4 h 49 m | Show |
Chris Sale makes his second start since returning from the injured list when the Boston Red Sox meet the host Washington Nationals in the rubber game of their series on Thursday. Sale (5-2, 4.52 ERA), who had been out since early June because of a stress reaction in his shoulder, returned last Friday and allowed two runs on one hit -- a home run -- in 4 2/3 innings against the Tigers. He struck out seven without a walk and retired the first 14 Tigers he faced. The Nationals will counter with veteran left-hander Patrick Corbin (7-11, 4.85 ERA). Corbin allowed an unearned run on one hit and seven walks in five-plus innings during his last start, a no-decision against the Phillies last Thursday.
08-14-23 | A's v. Cardinals -199 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 100 | 11 h 6 m | Show |
Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.20 ERA) will continue his quest for a strong finish to the season when he draws the start Monday as the Cardinals host the Oakland Athletics to open a three-game series. Oakland will start left-hander JP Sears (2-9, 4.23) in the series opener. This will be his first career start against the Cardinals. Sears took a 6-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in his previous start after allowing four runs on nine hits in four innings. Before that start, he had surrendered two runs or fewer in four of his previous six outings.
08-13-23 | Braves v. Mets +118 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 118 | 19 h 30 m | Show |
Yonny Chirinos allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.0 innings as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-6 on Tuesday. Chirinos struck out five, ending the game with a 4.83 ERA and 1.32 WHIP on the season.
08-12-23 | Guardians v. Rays -146 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 100 | 6 h 41 m | Show |
Rookie right-hander Gavin Williams (1-3, 2.90 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Guardians. The 24-year-old aims to follow up a dominating effort. Williams struck out a season-best 12 and gave up one hit and one walk in seven innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. He received a no-decision. It marks the second time in nine big league starts that Williams gave up just one hit over seven shutout innings. The other was against the Kansas City Royals on June 27. He also received a no-decision in that outing. Right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 1.15) will serve as the Rays' opener for the fourth time this season. Tampa Bay was hoping to start right-hander Tyler Glasnow (back) but decided to push him back to Monday. Armstrong has allowed just 20 hits in 31 1/3 innings this season. He has struck out 34 and walked six. Armstrong, 32, is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in six career relief outings against Cleveland, a franchise he pitched for from 2015-17.
08-11-23 | Padres v. Diamondbacks +147 | 10-5 | Loss | -100 | 12 h 40 m | Show
Arizona will start right-hander Ryne Nelson (6-6, 5.16 ERA) on Friday against San Diego left-hander Blake Snell (8-8, 2.61). In eight appearances (seven starts) against the Diamondbacks in his career, Snell is 4-1 with a 0.84 ERA. He has 63 strikeouts and 10 walks in 42 2/3 innings against Arizona. He is facing the Diamondbacks for the first time this season. Nelson is 1-1 with a 4.43 ERA in four starts against the Padres in his career.
08-11-23 | Twins +170 v. Phillies | Top | 2-13 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 8 m | Show |
The Phillies will hand the ball to Cristopher Sanchez (0-3, 3.44 ERA). In Sanchez's last start, he gave up six hits and six runs in five innings against the Kansas City Royals. Sanchez has never faced the Twins. The struggling Twins will look to snap a three-game losing streak. After winning the opener of a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers, the Twins fell flat and dropped the final three, including a 3-0 loss on Thursday. Dallas Keuchel is scheduled to start for Minnesota. It will be Keuchel's second start since being signed to a minor league deal by the Twins. In his Twins debut last Sunday, he held the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to one run in five innings.
08-10-23 | Cardinals +162 v. Rays | 5-2 | Win | 162 | 15 h 41 m | Show
08-10-23 | Blue Jays v. Guardians +118 | Top | 3-4 | Win | 118 | 9 h 20 m | Show |
Toronto will turn to Alek Manoah (3-8, 5.72 ERA) in the finale against Cleveland's Noah Syndergaard (1-5, 6.75) in a battle of struggling right-handers. Manoah, 25, posted his first win in nearly one month on Friday despite allowing three runs on six hits -- including two homers -- in 6 2/3 innings of a 7-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Syndergaard, 30, endured a horrific night during his initial outing at Progressive Field. He yielded a career-high four homers and five runs total in six innings during a 7-4 setback to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Syndergaard is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three career meetings (two starts) against Toronto.
08-10-23 | Astros -115 v. Orioles | Top | 4-5 | Loss | -115 | 9 h 40 m | Show |
Right-hander Dean Kremer (10-4, 4.61 ERA) will take the mound for the Orioles in the finale. He's looking for his first win since July 14. Kremer, 27, has received a no-decision in each of his past four starts. He allowed two runs and two hits in 5 1/3 against the New York Mets on Friday in his last outing. Kremer tossed his only career shutout against the Astros when he allowed four hits on Sept. 23, 2022. Overall, he is 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in two career outings versus Houston, both coming last season. Right-hander Hunter Brown (8-7, 4.07) will be on the mound for Houston and aiming for a third straight victorious start. Brown gave up two runs and struck out four in six innings while beating both the Rays (July 29) and New York Yankees (last Friday) in his last two turns. He gave up four hits to the Rays and five versus the Yankees. Brown, 24, has never started against the Orioles. He pitched one scoreless inning of relief in Baltimore last Sept. 24, giving up three hits and striking out one.
08-09-23 | Dodgers v. Diamondbacks +119 | 2-0 | Loss | -100 | 10 h 43 m | Show
Merrill Kelly (9-5, 3.21 ERA) will start the finale for the Diamondbacks. Kelly is 0-10 with a 5.45 ERA in 14 career starts against Los Angeles. This season, Kelly is 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA in two outings against the Dodgers. Kelly, 34, is winless in three starts since returning from a blood clot in his calf. He is 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA during the stretch. Kelly received a no-decision against the Minnesota Twins in his last turn when he allowed two runs (both on solo homers) and six hits over six innings. He struck out nine. Rookie right-hander Bobby Miller (6-2, 4.26) will take the mound for the Dodgers. Miller, 24, lasted just 3 2/3 innings while receiving a no-decision against the San Diego Padres on Friday. He gave up two runs (one earned) and six hits. Miller has never faced the Diamondbacks. Dodgers designated hitter J.D. Martinez was scratched from Tuesday night's lineup due to groin and hamstring tightness and flew back to Los Angeles. Manager Dave Roberts said Martinez will undergo an MRI exam.

Luis Medina (3-8, 5.35 ERA) is slated to start for the Athletics against the Giants' Alex Cobb (6-3, 3.05) in a battle of right-handers. The Athletics snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday when Seth Brown delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the eighth inning and a quartet of pitchers combined on a three-hitter in a 2-1 victory. Trevor May earned the win by recording the final five outs in front of 37,553 fans -- the A's largest crowd since 40,065 on Aug. 6, 2022, at Oakland Coliseum. The Athletics have regularly been playing to four-digit crowds during a season in which team owner John Fisher has reached an agreement to relocate the franchise to Las Vegas.
08-05-23 | Astros v. Yankees +126 | Top | 1-3 | Win | 126 | 1 h 20 m | Show |
A week ago, Justin Verlander was preparing for his first attempt at earning his 250th career win while still a member of the underachieving New York Mets. Verlander posted a 6-5 record and a 3.16 ERA for the Mets in the first year of a two-year, $86.7 million contract he signed in December after helping the Astros capture their second World Series title in team history. He joined a team that was coming off a 101-win season and was considered among the majors' preseason favorites. Verlander will be opposed by left-hander Nestor Cortes (5-2, 5.16 ERA), who is returning from a left rotator cuff strain for his first start since allowing two runs in five innings on May 30 in Seattle. Cortes initially hoped to miss just a few starts but wound up being transferred to the 60-day injured list. He allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings over two rehab starts for Double-A Somerset. "I've been on the shelf too long," Cortes said on Wednesday. "I want to come back and obviously show who I am and be back to the same form I was. So excited for this weekend." Cortes is 1-1 with an 8.04 ERA in six regular-season appearances (three starts) against Houston. He also faced them in Game 4 of last year's American League Championship Series but exited after two-plus innings with a groin injury. |
