09-04-23 | Clemson v. Duke +13 | Top | 7-28 | Win | 100 | 7 h 6 m | Show |
For Duke, it's an opportunity to show that last year's campaign -- the first under coach Mike Elko -- wasn't a fluke. The Blue Devils went 9-4 under Elko, their highest win total since 2014 and just the seventh time in program history that they won at least nine games. A victory over Clemson -- which has long dominated the league -- would go along way in boosting expectations and credibility for Duke. On defense, Clemson has to replace four NFL draft picks but will still be anchored by stellar linebacker duo Barrett Carter and Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who combined for 24 tackles for losses last year. Duke returns its fair share of standouts, too, including 98 percent of its offensive production. Junior quarterback Riley Leonard is back under center after totaling 33 touchdowns and more than 3,600 yards of total offense last season. On defense, the Blue Devils bring back defensive lineman DeWayne Carter and safety Brandon Johnson, each of whom had 5.5 sacks last season. Fifth-year senior Ja'Mion Franklin -- who had three sacks and five pass breakups last season -- joins Carter as an anchor on the defensive front.

09-04-23 | Astros v. Rangers -105 | Top | 13-6 | Loss | -105 | 3 h 22 m | Show |
Left-hander Andrew Heaney (9-6, 4.16 ERA), who went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA in six August starts, will start the series opener for the Rangers and be opposed by rookie right-hander J.P. France (10-5, 3.49). Heaney is 4-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 14 career starts against Houston. He is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts against Houston this season, allowing just nine hits and three runs over 15 innings while striking out 15 in those contests. France won his only career start against Texas on July 25, allowing one unearned run on five hits over seven innings while striking out three. The Astros limp into the contest after getting swept in a three-game series by the New York Yankees for the first time since Sept. 27-29, 2013. The Yankees completed the sweep with a 6-1 win on Sunday night at Minute Maid Park.

Each offense features a dynamic quarterback -- Jayden Daniels of the Tigers and the Seminoles' Jordan Travis, both of whom threw two touchdown passes in last year's meeting. This isn't just the second consecutive season that the Tigers and Seminoles have met early, but it's the third consecutive season that Kelly's team and Norvell's team have near the outset. Kelly's Notre Dame team defeated Norvell's Seminoles 41-38 in overtime in the 2021 opener in Tallahassee, Fla. Both schools have been keeping a close eye on Idalia, the tropical storm that was forecast to become a strong hurricane and hit Florida on Wednesday.

09-03-23 | Northwestern v. Rutgers -5.5 | Top | 7-24 | Win | 100 | 19 h 2 m | Show |
While the Wildcats ranked last in the West Division in Cleveland.com's annual Big Ten media poll, Rutgers at least beat out Indiana for sixth in the East Division. The Scarlet Knights are aiming higher and hope to benefit from stability at quarterback. Gavin Wimsatt was named Rutgers' starter before fall camp even opened. The former four-star recruit was an early enrollee in 2021 and saw the field in fits and starts in 2022 while nursing an injury.

Rookie Alec Marsh (0-7, 5.47 ERA) will make his eighth career start and first against Boston. His last four outings have been in relief, including a loss to the Red Sox on Aug. 10 despite allowing just two runs on six hits in five innings. Prior to Boston losing again on Friday, manager Alex Cora was unwilling to give up on his team's slim playoff hopes. Scheduled Saturday starter Tanner Houck (3-8, 4.93 ERA) has pitched at least five innings in 11 of his 14 starts this season, though the right-hander lasted just four frames in a 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last Sunday. The Red Sox surely could use any type of length after James Paxton was relieved after just 1 1/3 innings Friday in one of the shortest outings of his career.

09-02-23 | Cubs v. Reds OVER 9.5 | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -110 | 7 h 3 m | Show |
Right-hander Javier Assad has established himself as one of the most reliable arms on the Chicago Cubs' pitching staff. The 26-year-old rookie will look to continue a two-month stretch of dominance on Saturday when Chicago faces the host Cincinnati Reds in the third contest of a four-game series. Since June 27, Assad (3-2, 2.96 ERA) has been lights out, going 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA over his past 14 appearances, including five starts. He most recently allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out seven across seven innings to earn a win against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Assad is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) against Cincinnati. His two outings vs. the Reds this year both came in relief, and he had logged no decisions while allowing two runs in a total of 7 1/3 innings. Left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-4, 3.35 ERA) will try to slow down Chicago on Saturday when he makes his 17th start of the season. In his most recent outing, Abbott matched his season low by lasting just 3 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits against the Giants on Monday. He walked three and struck out six. Abbott, a rookie, has failed to work at least six innings in each of his past six starts. He is 2-2 with a 6.67 ERA during that span

09-01-23 | Stanford v. Hawaii +3 | Top | 37-24 | Loss | -110 | 13 h 31 m | Show |
The Troy Taylor era at Stanford will start Friday at Hawaii with uncertainty, not only because of the Cardinal's potential move to the ACC, but because the new coach will not announce his starting quarterback before the game. With former starter Tanner McKee now in the NFL, Taylor is deciding between early enrollee Myles Jackson, Ari Patu, Ashton Daniels and Syracuse transfer Justin Lamson. Until i see consistent QB play from the Cardinal, I'll go against them.
09-01-23 | Giants v. Padres -128 | Top | 3-7 | Win | 100 | 12 h 30 m | Show |
Right-hander Tristan Beck (3-2, 3.52 ERA) will open for the Giants against Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (10-2, 2.84). Beck made his first start against the visiting Atlanta Braves on Sunday. He gave up three runs on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. He threw 70 pitches, his second-highest total on the season. Wacha will be making his fourth start since returning from the injured list after missing six weeks with shoulder fatigue. After giving up one run over 10 1/3 innings in back-to-back wins in his first two starts back, the National League's Pitcher of the Month in May yielded four runs on four hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Milwaukee on Sunday. Wacha has made one start against the Giants this season, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks in six innings during a no-decision on June 19 at San Francisco. Wacha has a 2-0 career record against the Giants in eight starts with a 1.64 ERA, a 1.091 WHIP and a .219 opponents' batting average in 44 innings.

Coming off a disappointing 5-7 season in their debut under coach Mario Cristobal, the Hurricanes will open their 2023 season at home on Friday night against the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Hurricanes, favored by 17 points, are led by quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who is back for his third season as the starter. Slowed by injuries last year, Van Dyke for his career has completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 4,766 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 21 games (17 starts). The RedHawks gained transfer wide receiver Gage Larvadain, who caught 95 passes for 1,252 yards and seven touchdowns in two years for an FCS program, Southeastern Louisiana. The RedHawks also brought in two other potential starters from the transfer portal: ex-Notre Dame receiver Joe Wilkins Jr. and former Kentucky center John Young, who will join three returning RedHawks starters on the offensive line. Defensively, the RedHawks return seven starters from a unit that led the MAC in fewest points allowed (22.6). The biggest loss was starting cornerback John Saunders, who bolted to Ole Miss. He could be replaced by Southern Cal transfer Jayden Williams.

09-01-23 | Cubs v. Reds +1.5 | Top | 2-3 | Win | 100 | 14 h 6 m | Show |
Neither team officially has named a starter for the nightcap. Chicago is expected to turn to Caleb Kilian (0-1, 16.88), while the Reds likely will give the ball to fellow right-hander Ben Lively (4-7, 5.17). Kilian hasn't pitched since Aug. 13, when he allowed three runs in an inning of relief against the Blue Jays. He has never faced Cincinnati. Lively gave up three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks last Saturday. He is 0-2 with a 19.00 ERA in two career starts versus the Cubs.
08-31-23 | Braves -129 v. Dodgers | Top | 8-7 | Win | 100 | 13 h 42 m | Show |
Los Angeles will send right-hander Lance Lynn (10-9, 5.56 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. Lynn has gone 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in five starts since joining the Dodgers from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline. In seven career starts against the Braves, Lynn is 4-3 with a 3.32 ERA. He faced Atlanta on July 15 with the White Sox, and he got a win despite yielding four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Lynn will have to contend with an Atlanta offense that hit three home runs against the Rockies on Wednesday and already has a franchise-record 250 home runs on the season. It isn't even September. And Lynn leads the majors with 34 home runs allowed. The Braves will send right-hander Spencer Strider (15-4, 3.46 ERA) to the mound on Thursday. Strider is 4-1 in five August starts with a 2.37 ERA. He has been even better in his past three outings, going 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA while pitching seven innings each time. He is tied for the major league lead in wins. Strider faced the Dodgers on May 23 and gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings while absorbing the loss. He struck out 11 and walked three. In his only other start against Los Angeles, Strider went six scoreless innings last season in a no-decision. While the Dodgers are having one of the best months in franchise history, the Braves have gone an impressive 20-8 in August.

The teams' four-game series opens Thursday night with a pair of right-handers making rare starts. Jakob Junis (4-3, 4.09 ERA in 35 appearances and three starts) will open for the Giants against the Padres' Pedro Avila (0-1, 2.63 ERA in eight appearances, two starts). Avila is making his second straight start. He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings at Milwaukee on Saturday to take the loss. One of Avila's three previous major league starts came in his lone outing against the Giants. He gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in four innings during a loss on Oct. 1, 2021. Junis has appeared in relief twice since making back-to-back starts on Aug. 15 and 20. He has made three relief appearances against the Padres this season, including one in Mexico City. In those outings, he gave up 11 runs on 16 hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in eight innings for a 12.38 ERA. Five of the hits were home runs, four of those occurring in Mexico City. Junis if 1-0 lifetime against the Padres with a 9.26 ERA and a 1.714 WHIP in six games (three starts).
08-31-23 | Florida v. Utah OVER 43.5 | Top | 11-24 | Loss | -110 | 10 h 8 m | Show |
Florida brings a new-to-them, experienced quarterback to Salt Lake City on Thursday night where seething No. 14 Utah stands ready to exact a measure of revenge for the Gators' 32-29 upset of the Utes in the 2022 opener. Only eight starters are back from the 2022 Florida team that beat ranked Utah last September, but an influx of transfers means UF is hardly inexperienced. The Gators introduce Graham Mertz, a transfer from Wisconsin, as the QB1 on Thursday night alongside a powerful companion that might be the more important crutch at Rice-Eccles Stadium. That would be the Gators' running game, which overpowered Utah in last year's tussle. Florida gained a program-record 531 rushing yards and then-quarterback Anthony Richardson scored three TDs. Richardson was the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which is where Mertz fits into the plot line. But the Gators welcome back the running back tandem of Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne, who combined for 16 TDs last season, to offer proven production and continuity.
08-30-23 | Diamondbacks v. Dodgers UNDER 10 | Top | 0-7 | Win | 100 | 13 h 39 m | Show |
Although Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has not named a starter for Wednesday, right-hander Ryan Pepiot (0-0, 2.00 ERA) is expected to be part of the pitching plan once he is added to the roster. Pepiot allowed one run on three hits in four innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Cleveland Guardians. The Diamondbacks started the series with their two best starters, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, but the duo combined to give up 13 runs in 10 2/3 innings in consecutive defeats. Arizona was feeling good of late as a winner in 10 of 12 games before arriving in Los Angeles. And while the Diamondbacks have found it hard to measure up against a first-place club, they are still in the wild-card hunt, a mere half game out of the third spot. The Diamondbacks are set to send right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (1-6, 5.91) to the mound Wednesday. The rookie has made 13 starts this season with one coming against the Dodgers on Aug. 8, when he took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. Pfaadt has been solid over his past three outings, posting a 2.50 ERA while earning his first career win on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.
08-30-23 | Rangers v. Mets +140 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 140 | 9 h 13 m | Show |
Dane Dunning (9-6, 3.36 ERA) is slated to start for the Rangers against fellow right-hander Denyi Reyes (0-2, 7.50). The Rangers pieced together another narrow win on Tuesday, when Mitch Garver homered to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning and scored what proved to be the decisive run in the ninth as Texas edged the Mets 2-1. Reyes, who will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse prior to the Wednesday game, last pitched for the Mets on Aug. 12. In that game, he took the defeat after giving up five runs over 4 2/3 innings as New York lost 21-3 to the Atlanta Braves in the first game of a doubleheader. He has never faced the Rangers.
08-30-23 | Angels v. Phillies -1.5 | Top | 10-8 | Loss | -100 | 4 h 52 m | Show |
The Philadelphia Phillies continue to slug their way through the month of August. The power surge has catapulted the Phillies to a season-best 16 games above .500 following a 12-7 victory over the Angels on Tuesday. Philadelphia will now go for a sweep on Wednesday when it faces visiting Los Angeles in the finale of a three-game series. Alec Bohm, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and Bryson Stott each homered on Tuesday as the Phillies extended their winning streak to five games. Philadelphia has gone deep 57 times this month.

Washington is scheduled to start left-hander MacKenzie Gore (6-10, 4.38), who has never faced Toronto. He is winless with a 4.44 ERA in his past five starts.
08-29-23 | White Sox v. Orioles OVER 9 | Top | 3-9 | Win | 100 | 10 h 48 m | Show |
Right-hander Dean Kremer hopes to attest once again when he faces the visiting Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Kremer (12-5, 4.31 ERA) is 4-1 in his past nine starts while lowering his ERA by 0.73 during that span. He has been especially sharp in August, entering Tuesday at 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA in four starts covering 24 1/3 innings. Chicago will turn to Jessie Scholtens, who is seeking his first win since joining the rotation on Aug. 1, to try to even the series. Scholtens (1-6, 4.15 ERA) is 0-3 with a 5.33 ERA in five starts this month. After pitching at least six innings in each of his first three starts, Scholtens has allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in 8 2/3 innings over his past two outings. Facing the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, he took a no-decision after scattering five runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

Toronto is scheduled to start right-hander Kevin Gausman (9-8, 3.23 ERA) on Monday. In 11 career outings (10 starts) against Washington, Gausman is 6-3 with a 4.77 ERA. Gausman most recently allowed two runs on five hits in six innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. He took his second consecutive loss. Washington will turn to right-hander Josiah Gray (7-10, 3.85). He allowed two runs on five hits in six innings in his lone start against the Blue Jays back on Aug. 18, 2021. Gray took a no-decision in his last start, allowing one run on one hit in six innings against the New York Yankees last Tuesday.
08-28-23 | White Sox v. Orioles -1.5 | Top | 0-9 | Win | 100 | 10 h 37 m | Show |
The White Sox list right-hander Michael Kopech (5-11, 4.95 ERA) as their starting pitcher for Monday night. He's coming off drastically different outings. On Aug. 18, he surrendered nine runs in four innings in a loss at Colorado. Then Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners, he threw four shutout innings while allowing one hit, though he walked four before departing with leg cramps. He has walked at least four batters in each of his last five outings, with 22 walks and 15 strikeouts during that stretch. Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (3-3, 5.38) will be Baltimore's starter. The rookie has lasted at least five innings in each of his seven starts since returning from Triple-A Norfolk in mid-July, exceeding the 90-pitch mark in all of those games.

The Texans also must fix their run defense. Somehow, they allowed the Dolphins to gash them repeatedly. The Texans allowed Salvon Ahmed to average 8.3 yards per carry against them. Then, they let Chris Brooks average 4.3 yards-per-carry and Raheem Mostert hit 5.0 yards-per-carry.
08-27-23 | Texans v. Saints UNDER 37.5 | Top | 17-13 | Win | 100 | 12 h 41 m | Show |
The Texans will continue their strong evaluation of CJ Stroud. Ultimately, they will see how he plays, and the plan is to play a couple of series to determine how he handles NFL action early. But the Texans need to establish a running game. Unfortunately, all the running backs struggled. The offensive line must do a better job of opening holes and giving the running backs opportunities to run through them. Therefore, they have two weeks to prepare for the Baltimore Ravens, and running the ball and keeping the chains moving will be the best way to keep Lamar Jackson off the field.

Rom yielded eight runs (six earned) over 3 2/3 innings in an 11-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates last Monday. The 23-year-old struggled to recover from a rough first inning that included a costly error by second baseman Jose Fermin. Philadelphia will counter with right-hander Aaron Nola (11-8, 4.49), who allowed two runs over seven innings in a 10-4 win over the San Francisco Giants last Monday. Nola, 30, owns a 3.49 ERA in 11 home starts this season compared to a 5.26 mark in 15 outings away from Citizens Bank Park.
08-27-23 | Cubs v. Pirates UNDER 9 | Top | 10-1 | Loss | -110 | 6 h 10 m | Show |
In the series finale, Chicago right-hander Javier Assad (2-2, 3.13 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh left-hander Bailey Falter (1-7, 4.53). Assad was scheduled to start Saturday, but that got pushed back after the Cubs moved struggling starter Drew Smyly to the bullpen -- he pitched in Friday's game -- and put reliever Michael Fulmer (right forearm strain) on the 15-day injured list. They then recalled Wicks. Over his past four starts, Assad is 1-0 with a 2.86 ERA. His only career appearance against the Pirates came last season. He did not get a decision in a start on Sept. 23, 2022, pitching four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits. Falter got his first win with Pittsburgh his last time out, which was his fourth appearance since being acquired from Philadelphia. After making three starts for the Pirates, he pitched six innings last Monday against St. Louis in a scheduled long relief appearance, allowing one run and three hits and matching his career best with eight strikeouts.

On Saturday, Clarke Schmidt (8-7, 4.68 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 6.38 ERA in four starts this month, having allowed 13 runs in 18 1/3 innings. He had won six consecutive decisions before logging a loss and a no-decision in his past two outings, respectively. In seven career appearances, three starts, against Tampa Bay, Schmidt is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. The Rays beat him on May 14 in New York, when he yielded seven runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Tampa Bay's Saturday starter, Tyler Glasnow (6-4, 3.35), will look to rebound from a rough outing last Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the host Angels. The 6-foot-8 right-hander surrendered seven runs (five earned) and eight hits in six innings during a 7-6 defeat. In eight career starts against the Yankees, Glasnow is 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA. He posted a victory at New York on July 31 after giving up a run on three hits in seven innings as the Rays prevailed 5-1.

08-25-23 | Chargers +7.5 v. 49ers | Top | 23-12 | Win | 100 | 35 h 30 m | Show |
The 49ers are planning to play all of their starters in the preseason finale versus the Chargers. Typically, the third game of the preseason throughout the history of the NFL has always been viewed as the "dress rehearsal" game. It acts as a light warmup to the regular season as opposed to just throwing the starters into the deep end from the jump. But a team that is as established as the 49ers arguably doesn't need that. Playing all of the starters is a real gamble due to potential injuries, but that is something Kyle Shanahan isn't overthinking. In fact, he views this as a great benefit to his starters to play in the final preseason game. Still too many points for me
08-25-23 | Lions v. Panthers OVER 37 | Top | 26-17 | Win | 100 | 33 h 37 m | Show |
Friday night’s preseason finale between the Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers will be a good example of the difference in coaching philosophies regarding the exhibition season. The Lions will not play any starters in the game, based on head coach Dan Campbell’s statement prior to Tuesday’s practice. Campbell noted of the final exhibition matchup, “It’s going to look very much like the first two games.” Detroit sat all the offensive starters and even some key reserves in the first two preseason games. Most defensive starters have also been rested throughout the preseason.

08-25-23 | Cubs -114 v. Pirates | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -114 | 7 h 28 m | Show |
On Friday, Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 3.83 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller (10-8, 4.22). Hendricks has gone 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA over his past three starts. On Sunday, he limited the Kansas City Royals to one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and one walk, en route to a 4-3 win. Keller might be rounding back into the early-season form that established him as Pittsburgh's ace. The All-Star lost five decisions in a row from July 3-Aug. 3. Since then, he had two no-decisions followed by a win his last time out, on Saturday at Minnesota. He has a 3.18 ERA over those three games. Against the Twins, he gave up two runs and seven hits while striking out 12 and walking one in six innings for his first win since June 28. He finished one strikeout shy of his career best. Keller is 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA in nine career games, eight of them starts, against the Cubs. He has not faced them this year.
08-25-23 | Astros v. Tigers OVER 8.5 | Top | 1-4 | Loss | -122 | 7 h 52 m | Show |
In his past three outings, Framber Valdez hasn't come close to recreating the magic of the no-hitter he threw on Aug. 1. Following that gem against the Cleveland Guardians, Valdez has allowed 16 runs, 15 earned, and five home runs while going 0-2 with a 6.86 ERA in three starts. Valdez (9-9, 3.55 ERA) has allowed at least four runs in six of his past seven starts, the lone exception being the no-hitter. During his latest outing, on Saturday against the Seattle Mariners, he surrendered six runs and 10 hits in five innings. Matt Manning (5-4, 4.31 ERA) has overcome a rough patch and produced two straight solid outings. He limited Boston to one unearned run over 5 1/3 innings on Aug. 12, then held Cleveland to two runs (one earned) in six innings on Saturday. Manning, who was the winning pitcher in both games, had yielded 19 runs, 17 earned, in his previous three outings. He settled in against the Guardians after serving up a first-inning homer to Kole Calhoun.
08-24-23 | Colts v. Eagles UNDER 38 | Top | 27-13 | Loss | -110 | 32 h 18 m | Show |
After a lively Joint practice on Friday that ended with a fight between the two teams, Philly and Indy will get to settle things on the scoreboard. What was supposed to be a nice reunion in the City of Brotherly Love quickly turned chippy. Nonetheless, the opposing sideline will feature new Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who was the Eagles' offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022. He’s making his return to Philly after helping lead the team to the Super Bowl last season, and he brings with him Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew, who had been with the Eagles for the past two seasons. Sirianni will also be facing his former team. He was the Colts’ offensive coordinator from 2018-2020.

Ryan Pepiot (0-0, 1.80 ERA) of the Dodgers will face Gavin Williams (1-4, 3.02) of the Guardians in a battle of rookie right-handers during the regularly scheduled contest. Pepiot, 26, put his best foot forward after being added to the roster as the 27th man for the Saturday doubleheader against the Miami Marlins. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings in during a no-decision.
08-24-23 | Rockies v. Rays -1.5 | Top | 3-5 | Win | 100 | 4 h 29 m | Show |
The Rays did not announce a Thursday starter, but multiple reports stated right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 1.00 ERA) would serve as the opener of a bullpen game. He has made four starts among his 24 appearances this season and seven in his 227 career outings. Three of his four starts in 2023 consisted of two scoreless innings. In the other start, Armstrong went a season-high three innings and didn't yield a run against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. He pitched one shutout inning in the series opener on Tuesday. Colorado's Peter Lambert will make the start in Florida before the club stays in the AL East and heads to Baltimore for a series beginning Friday. The right-handed Lambert (3-4, 5.02) will be seeking to follow up his last start, an outstanding seven-inning stint in a 14-1 win over the White Sox.

The Reds will go with with their most consistent pitcher this season, rookie Andrew Abbott (8-3, 2.99 ERA). The left-hander allowed six hits and two runs over five innings in his most recent start, a 7-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 16. The Angels will give the ball to lefty Reid Detmers (3-9, 4.93 ERA) in the second game. On Aug. 16 at Texas, Detmers had the strongest outing of his season when he carried a no-hitter through 7 1/3 innings before Marcus Semien doubled.
08-23-23 | Twins v. Brewers -133 | Top | 7-8 | Win | 100 | 5 h 2 m | Show |
The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to ace right-hander Corbin Burnes to extend their winning streak when they host the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a two-game interleague series between division leaders. Burnes (9-6, 3.43 ERA) will be opposed by right-hander Kenta Maeda (3-7, 4.13). Milwaukee took the opener 7-3 on Tuesday night, bunching six singles for a five-run rally in the sixth inning. The Brewers, returning home after a 6-3 road trip, won their fourth straight to move a season-high 12 games above .500.
08-22-23 | Cardinals v. Pirates -130 | Top | 3-6 | Win | 100 | 7 h 51 m | Show |
On Tuesday, right-handers Adam Wainwright (3-8, 8.42 ERA) of St. Louis and Johan Oviedo (6-13, 4.55) of Pittsburgh are scheduled to start. Wainwright is coming off a quality start - three runs allowed in six innings Thursday against the New York Mets - on the heels of his shortest career start, when he lasted just one inning. In fact, he had given up 15 earned runs in four-plus innings over two outings before the Mets game. So the veteran, who is expected to retire at the end of the season, had a frank talk before his most recent outing -- with himself.

08-22-23 | Cubs v. Tigers +1.5 | Top | 6-8 | Win | 100 | 7 h 37 m | Show |
Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly has looked good this month in a relief role, but he will try to get back on track as a starter on Tuesday when Chicago faces the host Detroit Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game series. Smyly has tossed an inning of scoreless relief in each of his last three appearances. He'll be making his first start since Aug. 7, when he allowed seven runs in five innings against the New York Mets. Smyly (9-8, 4.92 ERA) began his career with Detroit. In three career starts against the Tigers, he is 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA. Smyly will be opposed by rookie right-hander Reese Olson (2-5, 4.83) on Tuesday. In his most recent outing last Wednesday, Olson lasted just 2 2/3 innings while giving up four runs and eight hits to Minnesota.
08-21-23 | Ravens -1 v. Commanders | Top | 28-29 | Loss | -110 | 30 h 27 m | Show |
The Baltimore Ravens play the Washington Commanders on Monday night in the second of their three preseason games. The Ravens have a chance to extend their 24-game winning streak in the preseason dating back to 2016. After a couple of lively joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday this week, this matchup is highlighted a deeper look at preseason standouts and the offense under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Quarterback Tyler Huntley looks to continue his brilliance in preseason Week 1. The fourth-year quarterback was 8-of-11 for 88 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tylan Wallace in the Ravens' win. Baltimore first-round receiver Zay Flowers has been tormenting his teammates in training camp and against the Commanders in joint practices. Keep an eye on the rookie on Monday night as he is slated to have a large role in Baltimore's new offense. Flowers' debut in Week 1 did not jump off the page, playing only eight snaps without a catch ... However, he impressed off the ball.
08-21-23 | Cardinals v. Pirates +1.5 | Top | 1-11 | Win | 100 | 7 h 16 m | Show |
The Pirates will look to get their offense going on Monday against left-hander Drew Rom, who is expected to be summoned from Triple-A Memphis to make his major league debut. Rom was the primary pitching prospect acquired from Baltimore in an Aug. 1 trade deadline deal that sent right-hander Jack Flaherty to the Orioles. In two starts at Memphis, Rom recorded a pair of victories, allowing just two runs (one earned) in 11 innings -- good for an 0.82 ERA. He also made 19 appearances (18 starts) for Triple-A Norfolk this season while in the Orioles' organization. During his time there, Rom went 7-6 with a 5.34 ERA.
08-21-23 | Cubs -1.5 v. Tigers | Top | 7-6 | Loss | -100 | 7 h 59 m | Show |
Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo (2-4, 5.16 ERA) will start the series opener. His WHIP (0.99) is a lot more impressive than his ERA, thanks to his last three outings. He has had a pair of scoreless, one-hit performances, first against San Diego over six innings on July 23 and most recently in a five-inning stint against the Twins on Tuesday. Former reliever Javier Assad (2-2, 3.11), Faedo's mound opponent, has posted two quality starts this month. He held Toronto to one run and four hits in seven innings on Aug. 11. In his last outing on Wednesday, the Cubs right-hander gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox.
08-20-23 | Saints -3.5 v. Chargers | Top | 22-17 | Win | 100 | 29 h 8 m | Show |
On Friday in a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, the Chargers’ ground game looked improved. This was the positive on a day when Justin Herbert and the passing attack struggled to make any bold statements. Only two teams — Tampa Bay and Houston — rushed for fewer yards last season than the Chargers. They averaged 89.6 yards per game, which was fewer than Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry. In their first preseason game, the Chargers amassed 214 rushing yards against the Rams but that was behind mostly reserves along the offensive line and without Ekeler suiting up. I think the Chargers will take a step back this week with this being a somewhat dress rehearsal if the game is played at all.
08-20-23 | Saints v. Chargers OVER 37.5 | Top | 22-17 | Win | 100 | 29 h 6 m | Show |
Both teams are coming off a week one performance that will be enough to push this game over the total. This will be a dress rehearsal for both teams on the back of practicing together for two days this past week. The Chargers still don't appear happy with their passing game, so expect both teams to throw quite a bit. Look for a high-scoring game if the game is played at all.

The Minnesota Twins will turn to left-hander Dallas Keuchel in the rubber match of their three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. It will be just the third start of the season for the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner, who signed a minor league contract with the Twins on June 22. Keuchel (0-1, 9.45 ERA) was solid in his first start, a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 6 at Target Field. He allowed one run on eight hits over five innings. Ryan Borucki (1-0, 4.07) will make his second start of the season on Sunday. Borucki is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA in five career games (one start) against the Twins. He allowed one run on one hit in one inning of relief in Friday's 5-1 series opening loss.

New York's Clarke Schmidt (8-7, 4.76 ERA) will attempt to rebound from a loss after allowing a career-worst eight runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings during Monday's 11-3 loss at Atlanta. Before his rough start against the Braves, Schmidt had allowed three runs or less in 15 straight starts dating to May 19. Schmidt is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA in six career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox. He started against Boston in consecutive outings on June 11 and 18 when he allowed a combined three runs on nine hits in 10 innings. Fellow right-hander Josh Winckowski (3-1, 3.20) will serve as the opener for the first time before Nick Pivetta follows as a bulk reliever. Pivetta is 4-3 with a 5.88 ERA in 11 starts and 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA in 18 relief appearances this season. He is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 11 career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. Pivetta is 1-0 and has yet to allow a run in three relief appearances spanning 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees this year

Right-hander Eury Perez (5-4, 3.19 ERA) and left-hander Braxton Garrett (7-3, 3.91) will look to help Miami secure a more favorable position in the postseason chase. Perez will get the nod for Game 1 on Saturday, while Braxton is scheduled to start the nightcap. In his most recent outing, Perez escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on four hits in four innings against the New York Yankees on Sunday. The rookie has never faced Los Angeles. Garrett worked five scoreless innings against the Houston Astros on Monday, surrendering just four hits to earn the win. He has faced the Dodgers once in his career, allowing three runs on three hits in three innings of relief on May 15, 2021. Left-hander Caleb Ferguson (7-3, 2.38 ERA) is set to go up against Perez to begin the twin bill. Ferguson, who will be serving as an opener, has made 51 appearances this season, but only one was a start. In seven career appearances (zero starts) against the Marlins, Ferguson has never earned a decision while recording a 4.76 ERA. Fellow southpaw Julio Urias (10-6, 4.35 ERA) is expected to take the mound for Game 2 after permitting three runs on four hits in seven innings against the Rockies on Sunday. Urias matched his career high with 12 strikeouts against Colorado and has picked up three consecutive wins. He has also logged three quality starts over his past four outings, giving up six runs in 24 innings during that span, good for a 2.25 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs are undefeated in five straight games with ace Justin Steele on the mound. Amid a tight postseason race, the host Cubs need that trend to continue while trying to avoid a second straight loss to the pesky Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Scoring hasn't been a problem in Steele's past five starts. The Cubs have totaled 45 runs during that stretch, as he has gone 4-0. However, the left-hander has yielded three earned runs in each of his last three starts. Steele (13-3, 2.79 ERA) has also failed to complete six innings in two consecutive outings. Most recently, in a no-decision on Aug. 12 at Toronto, he yielded six hits and struck out seven over five innings during Chicago's 5-4 victory. In his third big-league season, Steele ranked among the major league leaders in wins, ERA and WHIP (1.17), and he has already thrown a career-high 126 innings.

Brandon Pfaadt is considered the Arizona Diamondbacks' No. 1 pitching prospect, but it hasn't been an easy season for the 24-year-old rookie. The 6-foot-4 right-hander is in his third tour with the Diamondbacks this year, and he is still looking for his first major league win after 11 starts. Pfaadt is 0-6 with a 6.91 ERA. However, if Pfaadt breaks through on Friday in a rematch against San Diego Padres right-hander Seth Lugo, the Diamondbacks would have their first four-game winning streak since they won six straight games from June 6-12. The Padres have lost each of the last four games started by Lugo, the former Mets swingman who is 0-2 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.209 WHIP during that stretch. A large part of the problem is that Lugo has given up five homers in that span and at least one home run in six straight starts after allowing just six homers in his first 12 starts. The Padres are just 6-12 in Lugo's starts this year. Arizona is 5-6 when Pfaadt starts.
