11-29-22 | Charlotte +4.5 v. Davidson | Top | 68-66 | Win | 100 | 4 h 17 m | Show |
The Charlotte 49ers live and die on the defensive end of the court as Charlotte is allowing an average of only 55.0 points per game which is the 11th best in the nation. Charlotte is allowing a field goal shooting percentage of 39.5% and a three-point shooting percentage of 35.6%. The 49ers are averaging 32.1 rebounds per game led by Aly Khalifa with an average of 7.0 boards per contest. Charlotte's defense averages 7.6 steals and 2.9 blocked shots per contest.
11-29-22 | Jackson State +5 v. Miami-OH | Top | 78-95 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 9 m | Show |
Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight-up loss of more than 20 points, while the RedHawks are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 home games
11-28-22 | Steelers +2.5 v. Colts | Top | 24-17 | Win | 100 | 8 h 8 m | Show |
Jeff Saturday knows the score. The Indianapolis Colts have lost seven straight to the Pittsburgh Steelers since last winning 14 years ago - when Saturday was still in the prime of his playing career. And if Indy hopes to change anything in this lopsided series, he understands the Colts must be more focused, more precise, and more efficient Monday night. "We talked about just embracing the moment, having fun with it, appreciating it, and then performing at your best when you have these moments and opportunities," he said. "It's a huge challenge, and, obviously, Pittsburgh brings its own set of battles here." For the Colts (4-6-1), winning this one is a must if they hope to revitalize their rapidly fading playoff hopes. They've lost their past two home games - both 17-16 after the defense gave up a touchdown in the final 90 seconds and the offense couldn't move into field-goal position. Another agonizing loss to the Steelers could spell doom again for longtime Colts fans who have seen Pittsburgh repeatedly dash their dreams.
11-27-22 | Mavs +6.5 v. Bucks | Top | 115-124 | Loss | -105 | 9 h 17 m | Show |
Two of the NBA's top MVP candidates will meet when the Dallas Mavericks conclude their three-game trip on Sunday night against the Milwaukee Bucks. Dallas has lost three straight despite the play of star Luka Doncic, who leads the league in scoring at 33.4 points per game while averaging 8.9 rebounds and 8.2 assists. Milwaukee, again, is led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 31 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. Antetokounmpo scored 38 points in the Bucks' 117-102 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. Milwaukee trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half before going on a 23-2 run to begin the third quarter. "They turned it up to a level that we haven't seen, that we haven't experienced," said Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell. Jevon Carter scored 18 points and Bobby Portis Jr. had 14 for Milwaukee, which improved to 10-2 at home with the victory. The Bucks offered a reminder of their defensive potential in the dominant third quarter when they outscored the overwhelmed Cavaliers 35-10.
11-27-22 | Grizzlies v. Knicks +2.5 | Top | 127-123 | Loss | -110 | 7 h 23 m | Show |
For the New York Knicks, home is not where their defense is. But Madison Square Garden is where the high-powered Memphis Grizzlies will be Sunday night when the Knicks are slated to close out a two-game homestand by hosting the Grizzlies. Both teams were off Saturday after playing at home Friday. The Knicks squandered a 14-point first-half lead and fell to the Portland Trail Blazers, 132-129, in overtime. The Grizzlies never trailed in a 132-111 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. The Knicks opened their home schedule with a pair of strong defensive efforts in a 130-106 win over the Detroit Pistons and a 115-102 victory over the Orlando Magic. But New York has given up at least 130 points in four of its last six home games after surrendering at least 130 points just three times -- anywhere -- in the first two seasons under defensive-minded head coach Tom Thibodeau. The loss Friday was particularly discouraging for the Knicks, who didn't have to face Trail Blazers superstar guard Damian Lillard (right calf strain) but were victimized instead by the trio of Jerami Grant, Anfernee Simons and Josh Hart.
11-27-22 | Raiders +3.5 v. Seahawks | Top | 40-34 | Win | 100 | 6 h 32 m | Show |
Las Vegas (3-7) snapped a three-game skid with last week's overtime win at Denver and in the process gave the Seahawks a boost. Every Denver loss improves Seattle's draft position as owners of the Broncos' first-round pick next season. (Denver got Russell Wilson out of that deal, which isn't looking so great for the Broncos.) The Raiders have lost five road games this season, four by one score. "We don't know this team very well, so our team is hard at work in terms of learning the personnel, the scheme, the challenges they present in all three phases," Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said. "And then obviously, going out there and playing in Seattle, it's always a different atmosphere. A very challenging place to play. So, a lot of hard work ahead of us here."
11-27-22 | Bears +6 v. Jets | Top | 10-31 | Loss | -110 | 24 h 17 m | Show |
Mike White's phone rang Tuesday and it was Robert Saleh delivering some big news. The New York Jets coach was making a change at quarterback with Zach Wilson out and White tapped to start Sunday at home against the Chicago Bears. "It lasted all of 30 seconds," Saleh said of the conversation. "I said, `Hi, Mike, how are you doing?' He said, `Good.' I said, `You ready to roll, man?' He said, `Yep,' and I said, `All right, I'll see ya tomorrow.'" And just like that, the biggest decision so far of the playoff-hungry Jets' season was sealed. "Initially, just excited," White said of his reaction. "It's just what every player in this locker room wants is a chance to compete and prove themselves. But more importantly, it's just a chance to be a good teammate and help the team and worry about the team first." The Jets' decision to bench the underachieving Wilson was framed by Saleh as a mental and physical "reset" for the second-year quarterback. New York is also in the thick of the AFC playoff hunt at 6-4, and would be in the postseason right now after New England's loss Thursday night to Minnesota. So this game against the Bears (3-8), who have lost four straight and six of seven, could serve as an opportunity for the Jets to get right after a 10-3 loss at New England last Sunday. But it won't be the spicy quarterback matchup most were expecting when the schedule was announced in May with Wilson, the No. 2 pick last year, taking on the Bears' Justin Fields, who went nine selections later.
11-26-22 | Jazz +7.5 v. Suns | Top | 112-113 | Win | 100 | 10 h 9 m | Show |
The Utah Jazz snapped a three-game losing streak eight days ago when they edged the Suns in Salt Lake City. The Jazz, losers of six of their past eight games, will hope for the same positive result Saturday night in Phoenix as they find themselves in the midst of another three-game streak. This much is true: Utah will need to shoot a lot better to beat the Suns than it did while losing at Golden State 129-118 on Friday night, following losses to Detroit and the Los Angeles Clippers. Against the Warriors, the Jazz only made 11 of 45 3-pointers. "For the most part, I felt we played the way we wanted to play," Jazz coach Will Hardy said. "When you shoot 25 percent from 3, it puts a lot of pressure on you." Golden State jumped to a 37-23 lead in the first quarter, but the Jazz overcame the early deficit. Sustaining that momentum proved too difficult, however. Utah briefly took a one-point lead in the third quarter, but Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and company made the visitors pay for their off-night from 3-point range.
11-26-22 | Lakers v. Spurs +3 | Top | 143-138 | Loss | -108 | 9 h 15 m | Show |
The Los Angeles Lakers will look to sweep a two-games-in-two-night series against the reeling San Antonio Spurs when the teams square off Saturday night in the Alamo City. It will be the third game between the teams over a seven-day stretch, with Los Angeles capturing the first two. The Lakers, buoyed by the continued dominating play of Anthony Davis and the return of LeBron James, did enough to beat San Antonio 105-94 on Friday in the first game of the two-game set. It was the Lakers' first road win of the year after six losses. Davis had 25 points and 15 rebounds in Friday's win, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter after the Spurs clawed their way back into the game with a rousing third period. James was a force after being out with an adductor strain since Nov. 9, scoring 21 points. He also had nine of the Lakers' 21 turnovers.
11-26-22 | Iowa State +10 v. TCU | Top | 14-62 | Loss | -110 | 5 h 18 m | Show |
No. 4 TCU looks to keep its undefeated campaign intact and take its next step toward a berth in the College Football Playoff when it hosts struggling Iowa State on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas. The Horned Frogs (11-0, 8-0 Big 12) have already clinched a spot in the league championship game on Dec. 3 in Arlington, Texas, where they will play either No. 12 Kansas State or No. 23 Texas. And while the Big 12 title will be up for grabs in that game, TCU has a bigger goal -- beating Iowa State to remain in the top four of the CFP rankings. How TCU got to this point without a loss is a story in itself, especially in its most recent game. That's when the Horned Frogs needed a fire-drill, last-second field goal from Griffin Kell to beat Baylor 29-28 on the road last Saturday to stay unbeaten. TCU scored the game's final nine points over the last 2:07. Max Duggan completed 24 of 35 passes for 327 yards while leading TCU in rushing with 50 yards on eight carries, including a 7-yard touchdown. Taye Barber had a team-best five receptions for 108 yards, his second 100-yard game of the season and the fourth of his career.
11-26-22 | Old Dominion +15.5 v. South Alabama | Top | 20-27 | Win | 100 | 1 h 26 m | Show |
The Old Dominion Monarchs (3-8; 4-7 ATS; 2-5 conf.) extended their losing streak to five games last Saturday. Playing as 16-point road underdogs, the Monarchs suffered a 27-14 defeat at the Appalachian State Mountaineers. At least, they covered the spread for the first time since Week 7 and a surprising 49-21 victory at the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. App State outgained Old Dominion 498-394 in total yards, and the Monarchs trailed 27-0 at the end of the third quarter, scoring a couple of consolation touchdowns late in the fourth. Sophomore QB Hayden Wolff completed 22 of his 37 passing attempts for 308 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore wideout Javon Harvey had four receptions for 133 yards and a pair of scores. Let's take the Monarchs with the big number again.
11-25-22 | Nebraska +11 v. Iowa | Top | 24-17 | Win | 100 | 5 h 21 m | Show |
Iowa can get Big Ten title shot by beating Nebraska After losing three consecutive conference games, Iowa stands one victory from the Big Ten championship game thanks to a four-game winning streak. Iowa, at one point, was 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Then came victories over Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin and Minnesota, pushing the Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) in position to play either Ohio State or Michigan in the Big Ten title game. A victory over Nebraska (3-8, 2-6) on Friday at Iowa City, Iowa, will make it happen. "Really happy for our guys," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who was embroiled in criticism after the early struggles this season. "Really happy locker room. That's November football, whatever it takes to get it done." Iowa has won seven straight games against Nebraska, which is likely playing its last game under interim head coach Mickey Joseph. The Cornhuskers lost five consecutive Big Ten games after starting 2-1, including a painful defeat last week. Nebraska was competitive in the 15-14 home loss to Wisconsin but fell short when the Badgers scored on a touchdown run with 35 seconds left.
11-24-22 | Patriots v. Vikings -2.5 | Top | 26-33 | Win | 100 | 10 h 41 m | Show |
The first regular-season game Kevin O'Connell participated in during his fleeting NFL playing career came in late-game relief for New England in a rare lopsided loss. The Patriots had a bye the following week, and sure enough coach Bill Belichick had them ready for a bounce-back victory. Even after Tom Brady was lost for the year with a knee injury in the opener, the Patriots finished that 2008 season with an 11-5 record. The response to the Week 3 blowout was methodical, not maniacal. The message was about controlling what was in their control and simply letting the rest of it go. "That sticks with me to this very day, just as an example of what it's like to coach in those moments where adversity hits and how you need to be at your best for your team," O'Connell said. The first-year Minnesota Vikings coach has found himself in that very situation this week, following a 40-3 loss to Dallas. The Vikings (8-2) host the Patriots (6-4), still coached by Belichick all these years later, on Thursday night with only four days to regroup. O'Connell, fittingly, will experience one of the biggest tests of his mettle as the boss against a coach who significantly influenced his know-how and perspective.
11-24-22 | Giants +10.5 v. Cowboys | Top | 20-28 | Win | 100 | 6 h 3 m | Show |
The Giants just gave up season highs in points and turnovers (three) in a 31-18 loss to Detroit that dropped them into a tie with the Cowboys. Since Dallas won 23-16 at New York in Week 3, the Giants would essentially fall two games behind the defending NFC East champions with another loss to them. This is where the short week could come in handy for New York. It's just the second Thanksgiving meeting out of 122 overall in the storied rivalry. "I think it makes it easier because we have no choice, but to quickly move on to the next opponent," Giants defensive end Leonard Williams said. "Regardless of win or lose, every week we talk about flushing the last game and moving on to the next one." New York quarterback Daniel Jones has four rushing touchdowns, more than in any of his first three seasons. He probably doesn't want to be reminded of one he didn't get last season.
11-24-22 | Bills v. Lions +9.5 | Top | 28-25 | Win | 100 | 2 h 48 m | Show |
The Buffalo Bills are back in Detroit and this time, they're facing the suddenly surging Lions on Thanksgiving. The NFL shifted Buffalo's previous home game against Cleveland to Ford Field after a winter storm dumped several feet of snow across the Buffalo area. The Bills dug out of their snow-packed home and some needed help from team employees, neighbors and strangers to get out of town before beating the Browns to end a two-game losing streak. Buffalo (7-3) is tied with Miami atop the AFC East and needs another win to keep pace with the Dolphins while holding off New England and the New York Jets, teams in the division that are only one game back. "These short weeks are pretty tough in terms of scheduling and guys trying to get their bodies right to play, but it's tough for them as well," quarterback Josh Allen said. Detroit (4-6) has won three games in a row for the first time in five years and the last such stretch of success was snapped on Thanksgiving, starting a five-game losing streak on the holiday.
11-24-22 | Manhattan +4.5 v. Northeastern | Top | 67-69 | Win | 100 | 1 h 50 m | Show |
The Huskies are now 0-4 while the Jaspers sit at 1-2. A pair of stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Northeastern is the 21st worst in college basketball in takeaways, with only 10.8 on average. Manhattan has experienced some struggles of its own as they are stumbling into the matchup with the 358th most turnovers per game in college basketball, having accrued 19 on average.
11-23-22 | Clippers +9 v. Warriors | Top | 107-124 | Loss | -110 | 15 h 40 m | Show |
Golden State Warriors fans hope to see the Klay Thompson they witnessed on television last week when the defending champions open a three-day, two-game homestand with their first matchup of the season against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. The Pacific Division rivals both were missing key players in their last outing and came away with different results. The Clippers were without Paul George (strained right hamstring) and Luke Kennard (strained right calf) when they completed a 3-0 homestand with a 121-114 victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday night. Norman Powell and Reggie Jackson led the way with 30 and 27 points, respectively. The Clippers also got eight points and five assists from Kawhi Leonard in just his third game since returning from nearly a month-long absence due to soreness in his surgically repaired right knee. The five-time All-Star has played no more than 25 minutes in any game during his comeback and has averaged just 8.3 points and 4.3 assists in the last three games. Despite regular lineup shuffling, the Clippers have counted upon depth to get the season off to a winning start.
11-23-22 | Pelicans v. Spurs +7.5 | Top | 129-110 | Loss | -105 | 13 h 43 m | Show |
The Spurs will head home after a disastrous five-game trip in which they lost in San Francisco, Portland, Sacramento and in Los Angeles twice, with the average margin of defeat 23 points per game. The closest game on the trip was a 117-110 loss to the Trail Blazers. That was the only game of the five that San Antonio had all of its regular starters available. The Spurs' most recent setback was a 123-92 loss Sunday to the Lakers, who won easily despite playing without injured LeBron James. San Antonio was down by 18 at the half and then missed its first 11 shots of the third quarter to put to rest any notion of getting back in the game. Devin Vassell led San Antonio with 17 points, with Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan scoring 12 each, and Tre Jones and Josh Richardson adding 10 apiece. San Antonio, which has dropped 10 of their past 11 contests, played without Jakob Poeltl, who had been its leading scorer in two of its past three games. "We have a young team. Winning is hard in the NBA," said Gorgui Dieng, who started in Poeltl's spot. "They're learning. Whether you win or lose, just make sure you have the right habits. Tonight was a very bad game for us." Spurs coach Gregg Popovich also missed the game after falling ill beforehand. Assistant coach Brett Brown ran the team in his absence. "The end of a long road trip, five games in seven nights, is always going to be difficult," Brown said after Sunday's loss. "We're better than we played (Sunday). They have competed at a far greater level than they did tonight. We will respond. They're a prideful group." Wednesday's game will mark the first contest in a three-game homestand for San Antonio. Nine of the Spurs' next 11 contests will be at home.
11-23-22 | Wizards +1.5 v. Heat | Top | 105-113 | Loss | -110 | 12 h 22 m | Show |
The Washington Wizards have enjoyed a reversal of fortune by walking away with six wins in their last seven games, but seeing their star limp off the court is cause for concern. The Wizards begin a back-to-back series of games at the Miami Heat on Wednesday with Bradley Beal's availability in limbo due to a right quadriceps injury. "He'll be evaluated and then we will make a determination," Washington coach Wes Unseld Jr. said. Beal sustained the injury during the final minute of the Wizards' 106-102 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. He finished the game with 26 points, one shy of his total in Washington's 107-106 overtime win over an undermanned Miami squad on Friday. Beal has missed five of his team's 17 games this season due to a stint in health and safety protocol following a positive test for COVID-19. He boasts team-leading averages in points (22.7) and assists (5.8) points while shooting a robust 51.2 percent from the floor. Kyle Kuzma recorded his fifth double-double of the season after collecting 28 points and 10 rebounds against the Hornets. He had 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the previous encounter versus the Heat.
11-23-22 | Wolves v. Pacers | Top | 115-101 | Win | 100 | 12 h 45 m | Show |
Minnesota brings a four-game winning streak into Indiana. The Timberwolves' run has combined improved offensive efficiency, with Minnesota producing two of its four highest-scoring games of the season in the streak's first two outings, and tough defense. The Timberwolves have held each of their past three opponents to less than 110 points, including limiting Miami to 101 in a four-point Minnesota win on Monday. The Heat's 101 points were the fewest the Timberwolves have surrendered in a game this season. Anthony Edwards told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that Monday was a "tough game, ugly game," but added, "It was a great win and a great team win." Monday was the lone home-game interlude for Minnesota in a stretch playing six of seven games on the road. Wednesday's visit to Indiana marks the penultimate road contest in this span, with a Friday trip to Charlotte as the last game before the Timberwolves play four of five at home.
11-22-22 | Lakers +10.5 v. Suns | Top | 105-115 | Win | 100 | 9 h 22 m | Show |
Anthony Davis is enjoying his best stretch of the season and the Los Angeles Lakers aim to extend their season-long winning streak to four games Tuesday night when they visit the Phoenix Suns. Davis hadn't reached the 30-point mark prior to the current run but he is averaging 35 points a game during the span after outings of 37, 38 and 30 points. Davis also is averaging 17.3 rebounds during a stretch in which the Lakers are playing without LeBron James (adductor), who is listed as questionable for Tuesday and could miss his fifth consecutive game. Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham said the club will continue to be cautious with James. He sees no reason to rush things with the season not even 20 percent over.
11-22-22 | Pistons v. Nuggets -5.5 | Top | 110-108 | Loss | -110 | 9 h 38 m | Show |
The Grizzlies have lost their way defensively. After holding Charlotte and Washington to 99 and 97 points in the final two outings of a three-game winning streak at the beginning of the month, Memphis has watched each of its past seven opponents go for 102 or more. Two of those foes topped 120, including the Brooklyn Nets in a 127-115 home win over Memphis on Sunday. Dillon Brooks paced the short-handed Grizzlies with 31 points. Jaren Jackson Jr. joined Bane and Morant on the sidelines Sunday because he's being brought along slowly following off-season surgery on his right foot. He's expected back to face the Kings. "You take it in stride," Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said of the inconsistent lineups. "You control what you can control. We just got to rely on our depth." Memphis is 0-2 this season in games in which neither Bane nor Morant has played. Tyus Jones has started both of those games and has averaged 15 points and 5.5 assists. They will either play well defensively or get run out of the building.
11-22-22 | Kings +1.5 v. Grizzlies | Top | 113-109 | Win | 100 | 8 h 35 m | Show |
The last team to see the "old" Sacramento Kings will become the 12th to experience the new-and-improved edition when the Western Conference's hottest team visits the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night. The last time the clubs met, the Grizzlies handed the Kings their fourth consecutive loss to open the season as the Grizzlies got 31 points from Desmond Bane in a 125-110 victory in Sacramento. Much has changed in the nearly four weeks since. While the Kings have won nine of 11, including six in a row, the Grizzlies are just 6-6 while losing Bane to a sprained right big toe and Ja Morant to a sprained left ankle. Sacramento's winning ways figure to get tested on a four-day trip to Memphis, Atlanta and Boston that will sandwich Thanksgiving. The winning streak has featured double-figures scoring from seven different players, including De'Aaron Fox, who has used 57.7 percent shooting to fashion a 24-point scoring average during the run.
11-22-22 | Nets v. 76ers +8 | Top | 106-115 | Win | 100 | 7 h 0 m | Show |
Coming off his best showing for the Brooklyn Nets since being traded from the 76ers, Ben Simmons heads into Tuesday's return to Philadelphia feeling good even while anticipating the reaction from 76ers' fans. "In Philly? Come on now, I know what's coming," Simmons said. "That's part of the game. Philly fans, one thing about Philly fans is they are incredible. They are diehard Philly and they are everything Philly, whatever it is. I respect that about the city. It's a sports town." Given their injury woes, Philadelphia will not be necessarily focused on the return of Simmons, who averaged 15.9 points in 275 regular-season games for them before making his last appearance with the team in Game 7 of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals. The 76ers will be without star Joel Embiid with a left mid-foot sprain Saturday night and will miss at least two games. Already without James Harden for another two weeks because of a strained right foot, the Sixers lost Tyrese Maxey to a broken left foot Friday, and then Embiid injured his foot Saturday after colliding with teammate Georges Niang in the second half of a 112-109 loss to the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves. Tobias Harris (sore left hip), Furkan Korkmaz (knee) missed Saturday's game, and defensive specialist P.J. Tucker -- who often guards Brooklyn star Kevin Durant -- left that game due to an unspecified injury. However, it's the game after injuries where I like to grab points because replacements will be highly motivated to show what they can do.
11-22-22 | Ball State +2.5 v. Miami-OH | Top | 17-18 | Win | 100 | 7 h 49 m | Show |
Carson Steele is Ball State’s offense this season. The running back ranks ninth in the FBS in rushing yards with 1,376 and the true sophomore has 12 rushing touchdowns in addition. Steele utilizes his 6’1”, 215-pound frame and impressive weight room numbers to shed tackles at a jaw-dropping rate. Last week, the midgame injury left him four yards shy of his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game. With his status in doubt Tuesday, Ball State must reimagine its offense, but the Cardinals could still lean heavily on the run game with Will Jones and Vaughn Pemberton out of the gate.
11-21-22 | Heat v. Wolves -8.5 | Top | 101-105 | Loss | -110 | 8 h 52 m | Show |
The Minnesota Timberwolves will aim to stretch their season-best winning streak to four games when they host the injury-ravaged Miami Heat on Monday night. The Timberwolves will attempt to move above .500 for the first time since Oct. 30 against a Heat squad that will be without star Jimmy Butler for the third straight game. Minnesota averaged 122.3 points while winning the final three contests of a four-game trip. The Timberwolves defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109 in Saturday's excursion-ending game. The fourth quarter was shaky as Minnesota saw a 15-point lead with under nine minutes to play trimmed to one with 29.1 seconds left before holding on. "There are positives and negatives," Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert said afterward. "I'm glad that we won. I really want to say that. But obviously, it's a little sour when you close the game like this." Minnesota coach Chris Finch was pleased with the escape but not with the late-game play.
11-20-22 | Bears +3 v. Falcons | Top | 24-27 | Push | 0 | 22 h 5 m | Show |
Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears are learning how to score in the quarterback's second season. Learning to win has been the more difficult lesson. Fields will be in the spotlight for his Georgia homecoming as the Bears and Atlanta Falcons match strong running games - and deflating losing streaks - on Sunday. Fields, a native of the Atlanta suburb of Kennesaw, began his college career at Georgia before transferring to Ohio State. Fields' family had Falcons season tickets. He said his favorite Atlanta players were quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones. Fields didn't know how many of his friends and family members will attend the game. "I know my regular people are going - my mom, my dad," Fields said. "But of course, it's exciting, for sure. My goal really is just to go 1-0 this week and win the game down there." Fields, a 2021 first-round pick, has solidified his status as the Bears' franchise quarterback by leading the NFL's top rushing offense. He returns to Atlanta after rushing for a combined 325 yards the last two weeks, the highest two-game total by an NFL quarterback, surpassing the 268 two-game total by Baltimore's Lamar Jackson in 2019. Fields ran for 178 yards against Miami two weeks ago and added 147 in last week's 31-30 loss to Detroit. He will be the top priority for Atlanta's defense.
11-19-22 | Jazz v. Blazers -3.5 | Top | 118-113 | Loss | -110 | 11 h 47 m | Show |
The Blazers have their own All-Star who can light up the scoreboard on any night. Damian Lillard had 25 points and 11 assists in Portland's most recent outing, a tough 109-107 loss to the visiting Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. It was Lillard's third double-double in a row. "I thought tonight we just didn't do enough," Lillard said after the Blazers lost to the Nets on a last-second tip-in by Royce O'Neale. 11-19-22 | Raptors v. Hawks -5 | Top | 122-124 | Loss | -110 | 7 h 49 m | Show |
The Toronto Raptors hope to get an encore performance from O.G. Anunoby when they travel to play the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. The Raptors have dominated the series over the last two seasons. Toronto won three of the four meetings a year ago and scored a 139-109 win over Atlanta on Oct. 31 in their first encounter of the season when the Hawks committed a season-worst 18 turnovers. Anunoby scored a career-high 32 points and matched his season high with 10 rebounds in Toronto's 112-104 win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The Raptors have won two straight. Atlanta followed its emotional win over Milwaukee with a poor performance in a 126-101 loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. Atlanta has won five of its last eight, the losses coming against Philadelphia, Utah and Boston. Anunoby was 13 for 18 from the field against Miami and is averaging 18.3 points and 6.4 rebounds. "He wanted the ball, he controlled it, he made moves, he made pass-outs, all the stuff you have to do when you're the go-to-guy," Toronto coach Nick Nurse said. The Raptors should also have a healthy Fred VanVleet on Saturday. He returned on Wednesday after missing two games with the flu and scored 23, even though he wasn't at full strength.
11-19-22 | UL-Monroe +15 v. Troy | Top | 16-34 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 24 m | Show |
Louisiana-Monroe is coming off back-to-back wins after losing four straight games earlier in the season. Monroe defeated Texas State by 1-point and in their latest game, they went on the road to defeat Georgia State 31-28. The Warhawks defeated the Panthers in unconventional ways of scoring. Their first touchdown came in the second quarter off of a 23-yard blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter, the Warhawks were trailing by five points, and they took a 34-yard interception to the house for a pick-six. The touchdown gave Monroe a 31-28 lead with 6-minutes to go in the game. Georgia State would be stopped on fourth down in their next two possessions to close out the game and give Monroe the victory. “Two good wins in a row and we won our first game on the road. We’ll enjoy this game tonight and then we’ll get on to Troy tomorrow," head coach Terry Bowden said following the win.
11-19-22 | Indiana +11.5 v. Michigan State | Top | 39-31 | Win | 100 | 1 h 60 m | Show |
Indiana (3-7, 1-6) will look to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Hoosiers had the misfortune of facing Penn State and Ohio State on back-to-back weekends and got pummeled each time. It's uncertain whether Indiana will go with Connor Bazelak, who has started most of the season, or Dexter Williams II at quarterback this week. The Spartans have won 11 of the last 13 meetings with the Hoosiers. The winner will get the traditional trophy, the Old Brass Spittoon. "Not every program has the opportunity to play trophy games and rivalry games," Indiana coach Tom Allen said. "It's a great opportunity for us to play for the Brass Spittoon, a trophy we've had twice since I've been here and they currently have it right now. Much, much to play for."
11-19-22 | Illinois +17.5 v. Michigan | Top | 17-19 | Win | 100 | 1 h 57 m | Show |
That matchup will feature two of the best backs in the country, as Chase Brown, the nation's leading rusher, spearheads the Fighting Illini (7-3, 4-3) offense in a showdown with Corum and Michigan. Brown rushed for 100-plus yards in 10 straight games, but was held to 98 last week in Illinois' 31-24 loss to Purdue. It was the first time the Illini lost back-to-back games this season. Brown went down on the sideline in the fourth quarter with a right leg injury and had to exit the game. Illinois coach Bret Bielema said Brown is working toward playing this week. "Very positive and excited, but don't know where we'll be by Friday for the trip and Saturday for the game," Bielema said. Bielema said that linebacker Seth Coleman has been cleared to practice. He entered the concussion protocol and was forced to miss the meeting with the Boilermakers. Coleman has 16 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season.
11-17-22 | Bryant v. Florida Atlantic -7 | Top | 74-85 | Win | 100 | 7 h 50 m | Show |
The Florida Atlantic Owls will be returning home after a two-game road trip. They will take on the Bryant Bulldogs at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday at FAU Arena. On Monday, Florida Atlantic narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Florida Gators 76-74. The Owls' guard Johnell Davis filled up the stat sheet, dropping a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Meanwhile, Bryant didn't have too much trouble with the Dartmouth Big Green on the road this past Friday as they won 89-70.
11-16-22 | VCU v. Arizona State +5 | Top | 59-63 | Win | 100 | 6 h 49 m | Show |
ASU head coach Bobby Hurley enters his eighth season as coach of the Sun Devils with a 118-100 record thus far. Last season, ASU finished 14-17 overall and 10-10 in a very tough Pac-12 conference. This season, Hurley returns two starters from that team with the most important being oft-injured big man Marcus Bagley. After arriving at ASU as a five-star recruit, Bagley played hurt all of that first season and turned down an opportunity to enter the NBA Draft. He returned last year and played only three games due to a knee injury. He now returns, with optimism running high that he looks better than ever. If Bagley is right, he could bring ASU to the NCAA Tournament.
11-16-22 | Pacers v. Hornets -2.5 | Top | 125-113 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 33 m | Show |
Finally emerging from a long losing streak, the Charlotte Hornets will host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night hoping to get rolling in the right direction. "We've easily had stretches where we've had very good, sometimes exceptional play, and then we have times (when) we don't execute," Charlotte coach Steve Clifford said. "We're not that kind of team. We can be very good, but we can't give possessions away. We don't have that much room for error." The Hornets returned from three games in Florida with their first victory in November to snap an eight-game losing streak, their longest skid since 2019 and one shy of a wrong-way stretch of November 2014. That's among the positive aspects they'll take into the game with Indiana. It will be the home debut for point guard LaMelo Ball, something that's bound to bring a buzz to the arena.
11-16-22 | Delaware State v. Columbia -8 | Top | 65-70 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 26 m | Show |
The Hornets came up short against the Villanova Wildcats on Monday, falling 60-50. Meanwhile, it was close but no cigar for Columbia as they fell 88-85 to the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Sunday. The losses put Delaware State at 1-2 and Columbia at 0-3. A couple of stats to keep an eye on: Delaware State has allowed their opponents to shoot 47.70% from the floor on average, which is the 31st-highest shooting percentage allowed in college basketball. The Lions have experienced some struggles of their own as they have only been able to knock down 36% percent of their shots, which is the 352nd lowest field goal percentage in college basketball. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
11-16-22 | Miami-OH +1.5 v. Northern Illinois | Top | 29-23 | Win | 100 | 3 h 29 m | Show |
Desperation can be a positive. Miami University is out of the MAC title hunt, but it’s still alive for a bowl game if it can win this and take out Ball State next week. To do that, it has to stop the Northern Illinois running game. The Huskies' offensive line has the ability to take over at times for a ground attack that averages close to 200 yards per game. Miami University wins when it holds up against the run, it has to get the passing game going, and it takes games over when it’s able to get its own rushing attack rolling, too. The RedHawks are 3-1 when they run for 200 yards
11-15-22 | Montana State +11.5 v. Oregon | Top | 51-81 | Loss | -110 | 11 h 7 m | Show |
The Bobcats have covered 5 of their last 6 games dating back to last season, while Oregon has failed to cover 11 of their last 16 games. Double digits are too much here.
11-15-22 | Eastern Michigan +6.5 v. Bradley | Top | 61-89 | Loss | -105 | 10 h 9 m | Show |
Here comes Emoni Bates. Before the Eastern Michigan basketball star walks across the stage at the NBA Draft next summer, he will hold center stage at Carver Arena on Monday night. And the Bradley Braves will have to steal the spotlight. Both Bates and the Braves are in recovery mode, Bradley trying to bounce back from a 22-point loss at Utah State on Saturday, Bates from a roller-coaster path he's been on since age 15 as perhaps the top prospect in the nation. I think the number is too high, but Bates will be fun to watch this season.
11-15-22 | Utah Valley v. Wake Forest -11.5 | Top | 65-68 | Loss | -110 | 7 h 54 m | Show |
This past Saturday, the Wolverines narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 73-69. The overall outcome was to be expected, but Northern Arizona made it more of a matchup than the oddsmakers had predicted. Meanwhile, Wake Forest bagged an 81-71 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs this past Friday. The Demon Deacons' success was spearheaded by the efforts of guard Tyree Appleby, who had 22 points and six assists along with six rebounds, and guard Daivien Williamson, who had 24 points.
11-14-22 | Louisiana Tech v. Texas Tech -12.5 | Top | 55-64 | Loss | -110 | 9 h 8 m | Show |
No. 25 Texas Tech will look to continue its impressive home winning streak on Monday when Louisiana Tech comes to Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders (2-0) have won 23 consecutive games at home, most recently a 78-54 victory over Texas Southern on Thursday. Kevin Obanor, Texas Tech's lone returning starter and one of three players back from last year's Sweet 16 team, led the Red Raiders with 13 points and seven rebounds. Obanor now has 90 career games in double-figure scoring and hit 900 career rebounds in Thursday's win. Jaylon Tyson added a career-high 13 points in the victory while De'Vion Harmon had 12 points in a contest the Red Raiders trailed for only 42 seconds
11-12-22 | Utah State v. Hawaii +11.5 | Top | 41-34 | Win | 100 | 30 h 26 m | Show |
Hawaii was on the road in their last game and had one to forget in a 55-13 blowout loss at the hands of Fresno State. They were down 31-0 at the half, were outgained 572 yards to 362 yards, and gave up 245 rushing yards. The Rainbow Warriors did not cover the spread despite being a 27.5-point underdog and they had covered in their previous four games. Even though they only have one MWC win this season they have covered six of their last seven conference games.
11-12-22 | Arizona v. UCLA -19.5 | Top | 34-28 | Loss | -110 | 30 h 7 m | Show |
No. 12 UCLA can run the ball, and Arizona has trouble stopping it. The teams' Saturday night matchup in Pasadena, Calif., might not get more complicated than that. The Bruins (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) are seventh nationally and first in the conference in rushing yards per game (242.3), and they are coming off a 402-yard performance on the ground in a 50-36 road win over Arizona State, despite star running back Zach Charbonnet being unavailable due to injury. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson contributed 120 rushing yards, Kazmeir Allen rushed for 137 and Keegan Jones added 98.
11-12-22 | Presbyterian v. East Carolina -6.5 | Top | 57-77 | Win | 100 | 6 h 35 m | Show |
The Blue Hose will be seeking to avenge the 76-56 loss they suffered the last time these two teams played on Dec. 22 of 2016. Presbyterian received a tough blow on Thursday as they fell 70-58 to The Citadel Bulldogs. Meanwhile, things were close when East Carolina and the Mercer Bears clashed on Tuesday, but the Pirates ultimately edged out the opposition 77-75. Brandon Johnson and Javon Small were among the main playmakers for East Carolina as the former had 24 points in addition to seven rebounds and the latter had 23 points and five assists.
11-12-22 | New Mexico +21.5 v. Air Force | Top | 3-35 | Loss | -110 | 23 h 4 m | Show |
It’s a battle of Mountain West opponents from the aptly named Mountain Division when New Mexico plays the Air Force. The Lobos (2-7, 0-5) dropped their sixth straight game, a 27-10 loss to Utah State and a loss ATS as 14.5 underdogs. The Falcons (6-3, 2-3) took the Commanders’ Classic, 13-7, over Army last week, but for their second straight loss, ATS barely missed as -7 favorites. Over three touchdowns is too much for a Falcons team that might be looking ahead.
11-12-22 | UL-Monroe v. Georgia State -13.5 | Top | 31-28 | Loss | -110 | 21 h 25 m | Show |
Louisiana Monroe is one of the worst defensive teams in the country, giving up 36.8 points per game. They gave up 30 points in their last game and will need to do a better job if they want to stay within the number.
11-12-22 | Vanderbilt +17.5 v. Kentucky | Top | 24-21 | Win | 100 | 19 h 9 m | Show |
If attaining bowl eligibility with last weekend's win over Missouri wasn't enough to keep complacency from becoming an issue with Kentucky, the Wildcats got another boost with Tuesday night's release of the latest College Football Playoff rankings. The Wildcats (6-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) will take a No. 24 CFP ranking into Saturday afternoon's matchup with Vanderbilt in Lexington, Ky. It is the second consecutive season the Wildcats have earned a spot in the CFP's Top 25. They finished No. 22 in last season's final pre-bowl poll. At his weekly media conference earlier in the day, coach Mark Stoops talked about the importance of a strong finish for his team. "With three games left in November, we still have to be relentless in our improvement," Stoops said. "We've got to finish strong. That old saying 'remember November' is no joke. You want to remember how you finish." The Wildcats will be going for their 40th win in the last five seasons when they open a three-game homestand against the Commodores (3-6, 0-5). Matchups against Georgia and Louisville will follow. An improbable sweep of all three would put the Wildcats in position for a second consecutive 10-win season, including a bowl game.
11-11-22 | Fresno State -9.5 v. UNLV | Top | 37-30 | Loss | -107 | 12 h 0 m | Show |
The Fresno State Bulldogs will try to continue their dominance over the UNLV Rebels when the teams meet in a Mountain West Conference game on Friday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs have won the last four matchups against the Rebels. The average score over those four games has been 46-22. Fresno State last lost to UNLV in October 2017, losing 26-16. The Bulldogs (5-4, 4-1 in MWC) enter this season's game tied atop the West Division. The Rebels (4-5, 2-3), who have lost four in a row, are in fourth place. Simply put, UNLV has run out of gas.
11-11-22 | Colorado v. USC -34 | Top | 17-55 | Win | 100 | 11 h 4 m | Show |
The USC defense has excelled at generating turnovers, boasting 18 through nine games. Coupled with Williams' savvy play at quarterback -- he has thrown 28 touchdown passes against one interception -- the Trojans enjoy the nation's best turnover margin at plus-16 for the season. Colorado (1-8, 1-5) will try to jump-start its struggling offense, which ranks worst among all Power Five conference teams and ahead of only Colorado State and Massachusetts in FBS scoring averages. The Buffs are producing 15.6 points per game, backsliding after a promising, 34-point effort in an Oct. 29 loss to Arizona State. Colorado managed 10 points in a 39-point loss to Oregon last week. The Buffs have never beaten USC in program history, a streak encompassing 15 games and dating back to 1927. Since Colorado joined the Pac-12 in 2011, the Trojans have won the 10 meetings by an average of 17.4 points per game -- though three of the last six were decided by four points or fewer.
11-11-22 | Mississippi State v. Akron +6.5 | Top | 73-54 | Loss | -115 | 11 h 21 m | Show |
Akron (1-0) carries plenty of momentum into Friday's dustup as well after an 81-80 overtime win at home over South Dakota State in its season opener. Greg Tribble canned the game-winning free throw with 2.4 seconds left in the extra period to lift the Zips to the victory on Monday. Xavier Castaneda led Akron with a career-high 31 points that included an 8-of-12 showing from 3-point range. Enrique Freeman added 23 points and 14 rebounds and Trendon Hankerson scored 11 points in the win.
11-11-22 | Duquesne v. Kentucky -17.5 | Top | 52-77 | Win | 100 | 10 h 28 m | Show |
No. 4 Kentucky likely will be without All-American Oscar Tshiebwe again when they host Duquesne on Friday in Lexington, Ky. Tshiebwe, the reigning Naismith Award and Associated Press Player of the Year, sat out Monday's season-opening, 95-63 win over visiting Howard to continue his recovery from minor knee surgery on Oct. 13. "If he wants to play Friday, I'm going to have to work him out myself and see," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "If I did play him, he would probably play 10 or 15 minutes, just to get his legs under him."
11-11-22 | Belmont +9.5 v. Furman | Top | 74-89 | Loss | -115 | 10 h 14 m | Show |
Let's see if the Bruins are better than last season when facing teams above .500 ATS, after dropping five of their last six last season.
11-10-22 | Blackhawks +1.5 v. Kings | Top | 1-2 | Win | 100 | 17 h 23 m | Show |
The Chicago Blackhawks have not had much success in their past six games, but they did beat the Los Angeles Kings in that span. The Blackhawks will try to turn results around against the Kings once again on Thursday night at Los Angeles. Chicago beat the visiting Kings 2-1 in overtime on Nov. 3, ending a four-game winless streak. Chicago was shut out for the second time this season on Saturday, giving up three power-play goals in a 4-0 loss against the Winnipeg Jets to start the current three-game trip. The loss dropped the Blackhawks to 1-3-2 in their past six games, watering down their impressive 4-2-0 start to the season. The Blackhawks returned to Chicago after the loss to Winnipeg and held a long practice on Tuesday, looking to improve on their offensive zone play.
11-10-22 | Predators v. Avalanche -1.5 | Top | 3-5 | Win | 140 | 16 h 49 m | Show |
Winning a title is hard, but the Colorado Avalanche are starting to learn that repeating is even tougher. A beat-up Colorado team returns home on Thursday night to face the Nashville Predators after sweeping Columbus in the two-game Global Series at Finland last weekend. The organization suffered a loss with the passing of longtime broadcaster and U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Peter McNab, who died Sunday after battling cancer. McNab has been part of the Avalanche broadcast team since the franchise moved to Denver from Quebec in 1995. The team will honor him before Thursday's game. Colorado is home for three games -- its longest home stretch so far this season -- but will be short a couple of big pieces. The team announced that top-six forward Valeri Nichushkin will undergo ankle surgery and miss approximately a month, while defensemen Bowen Byram and Sam Girard are also out, with Byram's status said to be "week-to-week" due to a lower-body injury.
11-10-22 | North Dakota v. Creighton -26.5 | Top | 61-96 | Win | 100 | 16 h 23 m | Show |
North Dakota won its opening game of the regular season by 8 points over Incarnate Word but the Fighting Hawks struggled shooting the ball, hitting only 42.0% of their overall field goals and 25.0% from behind the three-point line. North Dakota was also careless with the ball as the Fighting Hawks committed 13 turnovers.
11-10-22 | Blazers v. Pelicans -6.5 | Top | 106-95 | Loss | -110 | 15 h 24 m | Show |
The Portland Trail Blazers are in the midst of a very successful road trip, while the New Orleans Pelicans are just glad to be back home for the first time six days. The Blazers are off to a 3-1 start on their six-game trip and will look to improve upon that mark when they visit the Pelicans on Thursday night. Damian Lillard overcame a sluggish start to score 26 points, making six 3-pointers, in a 105-95 victory at Charlotte on Wednesday night. Portland played without 7-foot center Jusuf Nurkic (adductor) and 6-foot-8 forward Jerami Grant (ankle). "Not having them out there makes us pretty small," Lillard said. "That puts us in a position where we might be vulnerable against a team that is always crashing the boards. So they hurt us with that. But we never stopped competing."
11-10-22 | Illinois State -9.5 v. Eastern Illinois | Top | 54-49 | Loss | -105 | 16 h 30 m | Show |
Eastern Illinois has been one of the worst cover teams in all of College Basketball (17-37). They've also failed to cover 21 of their last 28 games against teams playing under .400 ball.
11-10-22 | Coyotes v. Islanders -1.5 | Top | 2-0 | Loss | -105 | 14 h 18 m | Show |
The New York Islanders are aware they probably can't count on overcoming multi-goal deficits for wins every night. It just seems like that this week. The Islanders look to continue their early season surge Thursday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes in Elmont, N.Y. Both teams were off Wednesday after earning road wins Tuesday night. The Islanders came back from another two-goal, third-period deficit to edge the rival New York Rangers 4-3, while the visiting Coyotes never trailed in a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. New York's seventh victory in eight games was particularly notable for the Islanders, who overcame a two-goal, third-period deficit in a second straight win for the first time in franchise history. New York scored twice in the third Monday night before Noah Dobson scored in overtime to cap a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames.
11-10-22 | Tulsa v. Memphis -6.5 | Top | 10-26 | Win | 100 | 14 h 2 m | Show |
Memphis will look to end a four-game losing streak when it hosts struggling Tulsa in American Athletic Conference play on Thursday. The Tigers (4-5, 2-4 AAC) are coming off a 35-28 loss to visiting UCF in which the No. 25 Knights broke open a tie game with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to deal Memphis its longest losing streak since 2013. Tulsa (3-6, 1-4) fell behind 17-3 midway through the second quarter and never recovered in a 27-13 loss at No. 19 Tulane. It was the Golden Hurricane's fifth defeat in their past six games. Memphis must win two of its final three games to be bowl-eligible for the ninth straight season, while the Golden Hurricane must win their final three games to qualify for the postseason for the third straight year.
11-10-22 | Western Carolina +21.5 v. Maryland | Top | 51-71 | Win | 100 | 15 h 33 m | Show |
Maryland men’s basketball is off to a good start, pulling away from Niagara, 71-49, in its first win of the season, and Kevin Willard’s first win as head coach. Par for the course in game one of a new era, it wasn't always pretty as Willard tinkered with lineups and offensive and defensive schemes. But, Maryland’s starters looked comfortable playing together and dominated when they were on the floor. The Terps now turn their attention to Western Carolina, which they tip off against Thursday at 7 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Western Carolina lost its opener to Georgia and is by no means a difficult matchup for Maryland, but the Terps will still have to take care of business in their nonconference games against inferior opponents.
11-09-22 | IUPU-Indianapolis v. Drake -28 | Top | 48-80 | Win | 100 | 12 h 27 m | Show |
Iowa State handled the Jaguars with ease in their season opener, as IUPUI shot just 33.3 percent from the floor and 15.4 percent from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Jlynn Counter led the Jags with 16 points on 45.5 percent shooting, as he was the only IUPUI player to score more than six points. The starting five consisted of three freshmen and two other newcomers, as 12 players made their team debuts for the Jaguars. IUPUI turned the ball over 29 times, resulting in 31 Iowa State points.
11-07-22 | Cavs v. Clippers +4 | Top | 117-119 | Win | 100 | 13 h 38 m | Show |
On an eight-game winning streak with consecutive victories on their current road swing, the Cleveland Cavaliers will return to the same building Monday when they pay a visit to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Cavs pulled off an impressive 114-100 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday afternoon when Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points and put a charge in Cleveland's dominating second half. The Cavs held the Lakers to 36 second-half points and won after trailing 80-77 with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Cleveland's 17-0 run that extended nearly two minutes into the fourth quarter was the difference. "That wasn't who we are," Mitchell said on the Bally Sports Cleveland broadcast about a six-point halftime deficit. "It's never going to be perfect. That's going to happen, but it's how you respond through adversity. ... Coming out the way we did to start the fourth, that's big time." Mitchell now has 251 total points this season and became the third player with at least 250 points in eight games for his new team, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Wilt Chamberlain (317 points) with the Philadelphia Warriors and Kyrie Irving (255) with the Brooklyn Nets also accomplished the feat. Daruis Garland had 24 points for Cleveland, while Jarrett Allen (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Kevin Love (10 points, 10 rebounds) each had a double-double. Garland (knee) and Mitchell (ankle) each played after not taking the court Friday in a victory at Detroit. The Cavs are in a stretch where they play six of seven games on the road and visit Sacramento and Golden State once they leave Los Angeles.
11-07-22 | Blazers v. Heat -7.5 | Top | 110-107 | Loss | -115 | 8 h 26 m | Show |
The Miami Heat have played two straight games without their leading scorer, Jimmy Butler, who has been absent due to a sore left hip. The Portland Trail Blazers have played four straight games without their leading scorer, Damian Lillard, due to strained right calf. Even worse for the Trail Blazers, they've played two straight games without starting guard Anfernee Simons, who has left foot inflammation. The Blazers and Heat will hope to welcome back these important pieces on Monday when Portland visits Miami. Lillard, who is averaging 31.0 points, was upgraded to questionable for Monday. Simons, who is second on the Blazers in scoring (22.0) and third in assists (3.9), is doubtful. Butler, who leads Miami in points (21.5) and ranks second in assists (5.5) and rebounds (6.4), could also be back on Monday after the Heat didn't list him on their injury report. The Heat, who are set to start a four-game homestand, are coming off a two-point loss at the Indiana Pacers.
11-07-22 | Suns v. 76ers +2.5 | Top | 88-100 | Win | 100 | 10 h 10 m | Show |
Injuries and illness have hampered the Philadelphia 76ers through the first 10 games, although their most important player is on the mend. Joel Embiid, who has been sidelined with a non-COVID illness for three straight games, is close to a return as the Sixers get set to play host to the Phoenix Suns on Monday. Fellow Philadelphia star James Harden is out for at least one month with a strained tendon in his foot. For the Sixers to rebound after a 4-6 start, Embiid's return is vital. "I was 50/50 watching him at shootaround," Sixers head coach Doc Rivers said Saturday after a 106-104 loss to the New York Knicks. "I thought he was really struggling. He went through like 25 percent of shootarounds. You can see he wasn't feeling great, showed up, went out on the floor, got shots, and just felt bad.
11-05-22 | Auburn +13 v. Mississippi State | Top | 33-39 | Win | 100 | 9 h 50 m | Show |
Auburn interim coach Carnell "Cadillac" Williams will hope to salvage the Tigers' season, beginning with a game at slumping Mississippi State on Saturday night in Starkville, Miss. Williams, who was in his fourth season of coaching the Tigers' running backs, replaced Bryan Harsin after he was dismissed on Monday after less than two seasons on the job. "I truly believe Auburn has the potential to be a championship program once again," Harsin wrote in a statement on Tuesday. "The resources, financial support, and fan base are in place." The Tigers (3-5, 1-4 SEC), mired in a four-game losing streak, went 9-12 under Harsin, with losses in 10 of their past 13 games dating to last season. Mississippi State (5-3, 2-3) is coming off a 30-6 loss at then-No. 6 Alabama, the Bulldogs' second straight loss after opening the season 5-1. The Bulldogs and Tigers play contrasting styles of offense.
11-05-22 | Texas -2.5 v. Kansas State | Top | 34-27 | Win | 100 | 8 h 21 m | Show |
Kansas State is coming off a historic victory. Now it's time to prove that it was not a fluke. The Wildcats, ranked No. 13 in the first College Football Playoff poll, defeated then-No. 9 Oklahoma State 48-0 last Saturday, the largest shutout ever over a top-10 team by a team lower in the rankings. It was the Wildcats' first victory over the Cowboys in Chris Klieman's four years as head coach. They'll face another squad Klieman hasn't defeated when No. 24 Texas comes to Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday for a primetime showdown. K-State (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) played exceptionally well against the Cowboys, and two Wildcats earned Big 12 player of the week honors. Quarterback Will Howard, who played for injured starter Adrian Martinez, earned offensive player of the week after going 21-of-37 for 296 passing yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Punter Ty Zentner was selected special teams player of the week after serving as punter, placekicker, and kickoff specialist. He hit both field goals and all six extra points, plus placed two of his four punts inside the 20 without a touchback. The defense shut out the Cowboys, who came into the game averaging 44.7 points per game, tied for third in the FBS. The last time the Cowboys were shut out was Nov. 28, 2009, when they were blanked by Oklahoma, 27-0. The Cowboys also were held to 217 yards of total offense, less than half their season average (466.9 yards per game).
11-05-22 | Central Florida v. Memphis +3 | Top | 35-28 | Loss | -110 | 5 h 53 m | Show |
UCF just passed a pressure-packed test, one that coach Gus Malzahn admittedly would have preferred his team not have to take. Now the Knights, No. 25 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, have to prove they can win on the road. UCF (6-2, 3-1 American Athletic Conference) travels to Memphis (4-4, 2-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Knights are coming off a 25-21 home win over conference power Cincinnati, which was 20th in the AP poll a week ago and was a CFP playoff team last season. Leading 10-6 in the third quarter, UCF twice fumbled in the red zone. Those missed opportunities loomed large when they trailed 13-12 entering the fourth. Led by not-so-ordinary backup quarterback Mikey Keene, UCF capped a 77-yard drive with a touchdown with 4:36 left to take an 18-13 lead, surrendered a TD and two-point conversion about 1 1/2 minutes later and trailed 21-18, then responded again with RJ Harvey's 17-yard scoring run with 48 seconds left.
11-05-22 | South Florida v. Temple +3.5 | Top | 28-54 | Win | 100 | 3 h 14 m | Show |
Temple and South Florida are the only teams yet to win a game in American Athletic Conference play this season. Off to 0-4 starts in league play, Temple and USF are hoping to emerge with the elusive AAC victory when the teams convene Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. Temple (2-6, 0-4 AAC) has dropped conference games to Memphis, Central Florida, Tulsa, and Navy. The Owls absorbed a 70-13 loss to UCF on Oct. 13, took an early 10-point lead in a 27-16 loss at Tulsa, and succumbed in overtime during last week's 27-20 loss to Navy. Amad Anderson Jr. caught a 20-yard touchdown for the Owls and finished with eight receptions for 114 yards. E.J. Warner, the son of Kurt Warner, completed 24 of 48 passes for 268 yards and was intercepted twice. Perhaps the most encouraging sign came from the defense's showing against the Navy's triple-option. The Owls conceded 224 yards from scrimmage -- well below Navy's 370 yards per game entering last week.
11-05-22 | Marshall -3.5 v. Old Dominion | Top | 12-0 | Win | 100 | 3 h 9 m | Show |
Nearly four months later, they’re still coming one at a time. When the Monarchs host Marshall at 2 p.m. Saturday, they don’t plan to look past nightfall. That’s when time and football will tell whether ODU (3-5, 2-2 Sun Belt) will have taken an important step toward bowl eligibility or whether an already uphill climb will have grown steeper. After Saturday, the Monarchs will face James Madison, Appalachian State, and South Alabama — all teams with records above .500. But Rahne, true to form, remains singularly focused on the Thundering Herd (4-4, 1-3) with three wins needed to make the postseason.
11-01-22 | Panthers -1.5 v. Coyotes | Top | 1-3 | Loss | -109 | 12 h 19 m | Show |
After rolling up five victories and 11 points in their first nine games of the Paul Maurice era, the Florida Panthers head west for a four-game road trip beginning Tuesday night in Tempe, Ariz., against the Arizona Coyotes. Florida hit the road following a 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, firing a franchise-record 58 shots on goal in the process. That came on the heels of a 51-shot effort in a 4-3 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday. The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead against the Senators on goals by Carter Verhaeghe and Aleksander Barkov while outshooting Ottawa an eye-popping 26-4. But Ottawa battled back to tie the game 2-2 early in the second period. Despite finishing with a 58-26 shot advantage, Florida didn't score the game-winner until Brandon Montour one-timed Barkov's pass from the top of the right circle with 3:32 remaining. Matthew Tkachuk sealed the win with an empty netter with 14 seconds left.
11-01-22 | Seattle Kraken v. Flames -1.5 | Top | 5-4 | Loss | -100 | 11 h 12 m | Show |
Jordan Eberle's and Martin Jones' wives both gave birth to baby boys last Friday. The next night, their husbands delivered in their own way. Eberle scored his first goal of the season and Jones made 32 saves to lead the Seattle Kraken to a 3-1 victory against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. The Kraken is scheduled to open a three-game trip in Calgary on Tuesday night. "Obviously, midseason you have a baby there's a lot going through your head, but once you get out there you kind of just zone into it a bit," said Eberle, who has been through this once before. For Jones, it was a first. "It's been a roller coaster," Jones said. "Just tried to wrap my head around playing hockey (Saturday) and sometimes when you're not thinking too many things work out for you."
10-30-22 | Jets v. Golden Knights -1.5 | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -100 | 7 h 56 m | Show |
The Winnipeg Jets and Vegas Golden Knights will both put three-game winning streaks on the line when they meet late Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas. It will be the second meeting in an 11-day span between the teams. Vegas, jumping out to a 4-0 first-period lead that featured a pair of goals by Jack Eichel, won the first one 5-2 on Oct. 20 in Vegas. The Golden Knights, who lead the Pacific Division with a Western Conference-best 14 points, seem to have bought into a more defensive-oriented system brought in by new head coach Bruce Cassidy. Entering Saturday, Vegas led the NHL with a 1.78 goals-against average and has allowed two goals or fewer in six of its nine games. The Golden Knights also lead the Western Conference with a plus-13 goal differential. And rookie goaltender Logan Thompson, who made 29 saves in a 4-0 victory over Anaheim on Friday, owns two shutouts. "He's been awesome," Vegas forward Reilly Smith said of Thompson. "He's just picking up more and more confidence every game. It's great to see." Thompson sports a 1.69 goals-against to go along with a sparkling .943 save percentage. He credited his teammates for playing a big part in his good start.
10-30-22 | Magic v. Mavs -9 | Top | 105-114 | Push | 0 | 6 h 15 m | Show |
Rookie Paolo Banchero has received plenty of fanfare by scoring at least 20 points in each of his first six games to begin his NBA career. Banchero also has shown that he's willing to distribute the basketball following his season-high seven-assist performance in the Orlando Magic's 113-93 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday. The top overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft will look to fill the box score yet again on Sunday when the Magic visit Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. Banchero, 19, collected 21 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Magic to their first win of the season on Friday. He is averaging 23.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks this season. His 141 points over the first six games of his NBA career trail only Hall of Fame member Shaquille O'Neal for the most in franchise history.
10-30-22 | Warriors -6 v. Pistons | Top | 114-128 | Loss | -110 | 5 h 49 m | Show |
The optimism surrounding the Detroit Pistons entering this season has been tempered by an early five-game losing streak. In order to end the slide, they'll have to defeat the defending champions. Detroit hosts Golden State on Sunday and will need to shore up its porous defense to have any chance of pulling an upset. The Pistons were defeated twice at home by Atlanta this week, getting blitzed by guard Trae Young and his teammates. Young scored 35 points in the Hawks' 118-113 victory on Wednesday, then erupted for 36 points and 12 assists in just three quarters on Friday as Atlanta rolled to a 136-112 triumph. Coach Dwane Casey questioned his team's defensive pride after the latest loss. "They shot almost 57 percent and that's just a sign of lack of commitment," he said. "We have to make up our minds that teams aren't going to walk in and do whatever they want to us." A big night for franchise player Cade Cunningham was wasted in the process. Despite foul trouble, Cunningham scored a career-best 35 points and also contributed nine rebounds and eight assists. However, his teammates shot 36.5 percent from the field.
10-21-22 | Pistons v. Knicks -7 | Top | 106-130 | Win | 100 | 5 h 9 m | Show |
For Detroit Pistons coach Dwane Casey, a comeback from a double-digit deficit Wednesday provided some much-needed optimism in the midst of an extended rebuild. For the New York Knicks, their attempt to overcome a double-digit deficit offered another hard-earned lesson about the narrow margins between happiness and disappointment under coach Tom Thibodeau. The Pistons will look to build off their recent rally on Friday night when they visit New York for the Knicks' home opener. Both teams were off Thursday after back-and-forth season openers Wednesday night. The Pistons outlasted the visiting Orlando Magic, 113-109, while the Knicks fell to the host Memphis Grizzlies, 115-112, in overtime. The Pistons, who finished with the third-worst record (23-59) in the NBA last season while missing the playoffs for the third straight time and the 11th time in 13 years, got off to a slow start Wednesday, when the Magic raced out to a 21-6 lead. But the Pistons led 57-55 at the half and led by as many as 12 in the third quarter before fending off a comeback by the Magic, who tied the game at 99-99 with 5:17 left. Detroit scored the next seven points and finally finished off Orlando when Isaiah Stewart drained a 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 111-107.
10-13-22 | Temple v. Central Florida -23 | Top | 13-70 | Win | 100 | 10 h 52 m | Show |
The Owls have been awful on offense but have played tremendous defense. This team lost 24-3 at Memphis last time out on Oct. 1, and it has been outscored 54-3 in a pair of road games while going 0-2 ATS. The offense ranks just 125th with 282.8 total yards per game. The Knights have scored 27 or more points in 3 straight games, and 4 of 5 games overall. The defense has been tremendous, however, allowing 20 or fewer points in all 5 outings and the Under has hit in 4 in a row.
10-10-22 | Raiders +7 v. Chiefs | Top | 29-30 | Win | 100 | 16 h 14 m | Show |
The Raiders have been playing in close games lately, with their last nine games all decided by a single-digit margin (including playoffs). That's one shy of tying the franchise record of 10 straight, done twice (1975-76 and 1998-99).
10-09-22 | Giants +9 v. Packers | Top | 27-22 | Win | 100 | 66 h 19 m | Show |
Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur has done the London trip twice before as an offensive coordinator and "didn't leave the hotel either time." Safe to say he'd prefer star quarterback Aaron Rodgers - a Manchester City fan - not try to venture north for the Premier League champion's home game Saturday (though Rodgers could satisfy his soccer fix Friday night when the U.S. women's team faces European champion England in a friendly at Wembley Stadium). The Packers' schedule for their first-ever international regular-season game doesn't leave much time for sightseeing. Same goes for the New York Giants (3-1). Both teams are scheduled to arrive in the British capital Friday morning ahead of Sunday's game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Rodgers, a four-time MVP, had hoped the Packers (3-1) would arrive earlier in the week "to experience a little bit of that culture" but he knows ultimately it's a business trip - a long-awaited one at that.
10-06-22 | Colts +3.5 v. Broncos | Top | 12-9 | Win | 100 | 10 h 23 m | Show |
Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan can sure feel each other's pain. None of the nine NFL teams that changed quarterbacks this season has a winning record heading into October. Two of them square off Thursday night when Ryan's beleaguered Indianapolis Colts (1-2-1) visit Wilson's banged-up Denver Broncos (2-2). Both QBs have found a rough transition to their new teams and both are missing key offensive and defensive players on a short week. Ryan has eight turnovers in four games, has been sacked 15 times and fumbled nine times in his first season since leaving Atlanta. Wilson is off to the slowest start of his career with just four TD passes in his first season out of Seattle. New surroundings, new teammates, new terminology are all hurdles that even former MVPs such as Ryan or Super Bowl winners such as Wilson have to overcome.
10-03-22 | Rams v. 49ers | Top | 9-24 | Win | 100 | 30 h 36 m | Show |
The stakes will be far lower when the Los Angeles Rams visit the San Francisco 49ers for the third meeting between the teams this calendar year. The intensity is always high when these NFC West rivals meet. Ever since good friends Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan took over as coaches in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2017, the franchises have used each other as measuring sticks. That will be no different on Monday night when the Rams (2-1) visit the 49ers (1-2). "A lot of these games over the last couple of years have been deciding factors for playoff seeding, home-field advantage, obviously an NFC championship thrown into the mix. So they've always had a huge level of importance," Niners right tackle Mike McGlinchey said. "We know each other very well. It's been a lot of the same core guys down there, it's been a lot of the same core guys up here. So it's always a fun battle." The Rams have had better team success with four playoff berths, two Super Bowl appearances and the title last season. The Niners have had the edge in the head-to-head battle, winning the past six regular-season matchups, including a Week 18 game last January that got them into the playoffs. But the Rams got their revenge a few weeks later when they beat San Francisco 20-17 in the NFC title game on the way to their Super Bowl victory. "We could talk about all those different games, but I think at the end of the day what it boils down to is they've played well, they've made the plays in crunch time," McVay said. "I think the ultimate thing that's really important for us is each game is its own separate entity. ... But we know that this game is going to be different than the other ones. We've got to be able to show up, and play well in that three-hour window. That's what our focus and concentration will be solely focused on. No different than when we had to play them for the third time last year." JIMMY BOUNCEBACK Garoppolo's first start after Trey Lance went down with a season-ending ankle injury for San Francisco turned out to be a dud. Instead of building off a promising relief appearance in Week 2, Garoppolo looked rusty after no offseason work and showed the flaws that led the Niners to make the big move to acquire Lance last season. He missed on a few chances at big plays in the first half, then turned it over twice in the second half, as well as stepping out of the end zone for a safety in the 11-10 loss to Denver.
10-02-22 | Bills v. Ravens +3.5 | Top | 23-20 | Win | 100 | 25 h 43 m | Show |
The Ravens lost their first home game versus the Bills (13-10 on Halloween in 1999) but they're 5-0 against them in Baltimore since then, holding Buffalo to seven or fewer points four times, including the most recent game, a 47-3 Ravens win in the 2018 season opener.
09-30-22 | Pirates v. Cardinals -1.5 | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -100 | 11 h 47 m | Show |
Pitcher Johan Oviedo will get his first chance to face his old team when the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the St. Louis Cardinals Friday. Oviedo (4-2, 3.13 ERA) will start for Pittsburgh in the opener of a three-game series. The Cardinals (90-66) sent Oviedo and infield prospect Malcom Nunez to the Pirates (59-97) for pitchers Jose Quintana and Chris Stratton before the trade deadline. Oviedo is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in five starts for the Pirates. In his last outing, Oviedo blanked the Chicago Cubs for seven innings on three hits in a 6-0 victory. He walked nobody and struck out seven batters.
09-30-22 | Tulane v. Houston -2.5 | Top | 27-24 | Loss | -105 | 9 h 1 m | Show |
Houston tries to weed out problems in meeting with Tulane Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen is looking for an all-around improvement from his Cougars, and not all of it has to do with them splitting the first four games of the season. After starting the campaign ranked No. 24, the season started on a high note for Houston, after beating UTSA 37-35 in three overtimes. But now, it there may be tension within the program. The Cougars (2-2) will look to sort out some of those problems when they host American Athletic Conference foe Tulane (3-1) Friday night in the conference opener. In his fourth year at Houston's helm, Holgorsen has become frustrated with his squad.
09-30-22 | Phillies -1.5 v. Nationals | Top | 5-1 | Win | 100 | 4 h 54 m | Show |
The remnants of Hurricane Ian that are forecasted to bring inclement weather to the Washington, D.C. area changed the schedule of the Washington Nationals four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend. The teams will open the series with a doubleheader on Friday, with the first game starting at 1:05 p.m. ET, after a doubleheader was originally planned for Saturday. They will play Friday's scheduled game at 7:05 p.m., with Saturday's lone game set for 1:05 p.m. and Sunday's finale scheduled for 1:35 p.m. The Phillies (83-72), who are locked in a tight race with the Milwaukee Brewers for the final National League wild-card spot, have defeated the Nationals (54-101) eight straight times and in 13 of their 15 meetings this year. Philadelphia, however, has lost five straight games and 10 of its past 13 after falling 2-0 to the host Chicago Cubs on Thursday.
09-27-22 | Dodgers -1.5 v. Padres | Top | 3-4 | Loss | -100 | 16 h 28 m | Show |
The Los Angeles Dodgers and host San Diego Padres, two teams with different priorities in the stretch run, square off on Tuesday to open their final head-to-head series of the regular season. For the Padres, the goal is clear: Reach the postseason as a wild card. As it stands right now, they would do just that. San Diego (85-68) currently holds the second of three National League wild-card berths and is three games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers (82-71), who sit just outside the playoff picture behind the Philadelphia Phillies (83-69). The Padres' magic number is six, and they have an added edge with all nine of their remaining regular-season games at home. The Dodgers (106-47) clinched the No. 1 seed for the NL playoffs with their 106th win on Sunday. What are they playing for? Total domination -- and history. They have matched the single-season franchise record for wins, and a victory on Tuesday would set a new mark.
09-26-22 | Cowboys v. Giants | Top | 23-16 | Loss | -125 | 14 h 36 m | Show |
The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants are going to renew their NFC East rivalry on Monday night, -and this one might be an indication of whether the times are changing. The Cowboys, the defending division champions, have owned the Giants the last five years. The teams have played 10 times and Dallas has won nine. This season has gotten off to an interesting start, though. Dallas has split two games and saw quarterback Dak Prescott undergo thumb surgery after the season opener. How long the star quarterback will be sidelined is uncertain, but Cooper Rush will be running the offense against the surprising Giants. New York, which won four games last year, is halfway to that total after knocking off Tennessee and Carolina in Brian Daboll's first two games as coach. Beating Dallas in a nationally televised game would be another step toward respectability after five straight losing seasons.
09-25-22 | 49ers v. Broncos +2 | Top | 10-11 | Win | 100 | 10 h 36 m | Show |
The only difference the San Francisco 49ers see in longtime nemesis Russell Wilson isn't in his game but his gear. "It's so weird seeing him in a new uniform," linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair said. "But he's the same exact guy." Kyle Shanahan thinks so, too. "I see the same stuff I've seen going against him in Seattle for the last 10 years. (It's just that) they've just come up short on a couple of touchdowns there," said San Francisco's coach, who brings a 2-8 record against Wilson into Sunday night's showdown between the 49ers (1-1) and Broncos (1-1). Shanahan pointed to Wilson's 35-yard fourth-quarter dart to Courtland Sutton on third-and-16 last week as evidence the 33-year-old QB still has it.
09-25-22 | Jaguars +3.5 v. Chargers | Top | 38-10 | Win | 100 | 5 h 27 m | Show |
There's plenty to like about a matchup between quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert. Not only are they at the top of the list for the league's best hair, but both are the leaders of their respective franchises. The biggest question, though, going into Sunday's matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers is if they will face each other for the first time. Herbert is listed as questionable after not practicing Friday and being limited Wednesday and Thursday due to fractured rib cartilage. The injury happened after he took a hit from Kansas City's Michael Danna during the fourth quarter of last Thursday's 27-24 loss to the Chiefs. After not making any passes Wednesday, Herbert took his normal amount of throws Thursday during the individual session of practice open to reporters. If he plays, Herbert will wear a rib protector, but could also receive an injection to deal with the pain. Herbert's status will likely not be fully resolved until Sunday morning.
09-24-22 | Central Michigan v. Penn State -28 | Top | 14-33 | Loss | -110 | 1 h 34 m | Show |
After an eye-opening performance on the road, the big question for No. 14 Penn State is how much of an emotional letdown there may be. The Nittany Lions (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) turned in one of the most impressive performances of the young season last week with a 41-12 road win at SEC foe Auburn, but now must refocus for a game against a Group of Five opponent when Central Michigan visits University Park, Pa., for a noon kickoff on Saturday. Of all the things that stood out for Penn State in the win at Auburn, maybe the most noticeable was the way the Nittany Lions ran the ball. Penn State struggled with its offensive line play and running game last year, but completely controlled Auburn's defensive line, rushing for 245 yards on 6.3 per carry. True freshman Nicholas Singleton was the biggest beneficiary of Penn State's improved line play, rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Freshman Kaytron Allen, sophomore Keyvone Lee and junior Devyn Ford have flanked Singleton in what is a deep group of running backs for Penn State. "We're getting better up front and at tight end," Penn State head coach James Franklin said after the game. "We're doing some things speed-wise to help them. The ability to be more balanced and take pressure off the passing game, I think it's been really important for us. We also have some dynamic backs that help create some explosive plays." Penn State's offense has averaged more than 40 points a game to start the season.
09-22-22 | Diamondbacks v. Dodgers -1.5 | Top | 2-3 | Loss | -100 | 8 h 59 m | Show |
Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias will turn in some final prep work in advance of next month's playoffs, while attempting to help his Cy Young Award cause, when he takes the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Expected to be the club's No. 1 starter when the postseason begins, Urias (17-7, 2.27 ERA) will be out to continue an impressive second half that has eased concerns surrounding the National League West champions. The Dodgers lost staff ace, Walker Buehler, earlier this season to Tommy John surgery, while veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw has been off and on the injured list with back issues. So Urias moved himself to the head of the rotation, thanks to a 9-1 record with a 1.31 ERA since the All-Star break. He leads the NL in ERA. Urias now has a chance to record consecutive 20-win seasons after reaching the milestone for the first time last season. He remains in line for three more starts before the regular season is complete. In his most recent outing Saturday at San Francisco, Urias gave up two runs on five hits over six innings as the Dodgers went on to a 7-2 victory.
09-22-22 | Steelers v. Browns -4 | Top | 17-29 | Win | 100 | 6 h 48 m | Show |
For the first time since 2004, Ben Roethlisberger isn't part of the Steelers-Browns rivalry, a matchup the Ohio-born-and-bred quarterback dominated for 18 seasons and will now watch with everyone else. On Thursday night, Mitch Trubisky makes his debut in one of the NFL's fiercest feuds. A second appearance isn't guaranteed. Struggling to connect with Pittsburgh's receivers, Trubisky, chosen as the starter in training camp over rookie quarterback-in-waiting Kenny Pickens, may look to take some deep shots downfield when the Steelers (1-1) visit a Browns team still reeling from an epic collapse in their home opener on Sunday. Trubisky is ranked 32nd in yards per attempt, one of several troubling stats for him after just two games and perhaps a reflection on the 28-year-old being more of a game manager than game changer. Still, Trubisky, who grew up in Northeast Ohio but was never particularly keen on the Browns (1-1), is confident he'll soon begin hooking up with Pittsburgh's talented, but to this point underused, receivers.
09-22-22 | West Virginia -2.5 v. Virginia Tech | Top | 33-10 | Win | 100 | 5 h 11 m | Show |
West Virginia (1-2) ignited its offense by scoring on all 10 of its possessions (nine touchdowns, one field goal) in a 65-7 romp over FCS foe Towson on Saturday. Freshman CJ Donaldson found the end zone on three occasions during the first half, including an 82-yard scamper down the sideline. He has rushed for 274 yards and six touchdowns in three games this season. Fellow running back Tony Mathis Jr. scored two first-half touchdowns on Saturday before finishing with 104 yards on 17 carries.
09-20-22 | Red Sox -1.5 v. Reds | Top | 5-3 | Win | 141 | 7 h 53 m | Show |
Xander Bogaerts' future with the Boston Red Sox may be uncertain, but he certainly has goals to achieve as his team plays out the string of an underachieving season. Bogaerts has his sights on his first career batting title and he'll continue his pursuit of the milestone when the Red Sox open a two-game set against the host Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Bogaerts entered Monday's play with a .316 average, which was tied for second in the American League with Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees. Luis Arraez of the Minnesota Twins has a league-best .317 average. Bogaerts said the batting title race will keep him focused down the stretch of a lackluster season for Boston (71-75).
09-19-22 | Diamondbacks v. Dodgers -1.5 | Top | 2-5 | Win | 100 | 2 h 57 m | Show |
The Los Angeles Dodgers return home Monday as National League West champions, facing the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of an extended five-game series, which also is the start of an eight-game homestand. When the teams met at Arizona on Tuesday, the Dodgers earned a 4-0 victory to wrap up their ninth division title in the past 10 seasons. A day later, though, Los Angeles' main weakness was exposed when closer Craig Kimbrel gave up a game-ending home run to the Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara. Kimbrel has been on a rocky ride in his first season as the Dodgers' closer, blowing five saves, getting tagged with a loss six times and posting a 3.96 ERA in 52 1/3 innings. Other late-inning relief options like right-handers Blake Treinen and Brusdar Graterol have struggled with injuries. With the playoffs fast approaching, the Dodgers remain in search of answers for the back end of their bullpen. Despite the bullpen troubles, the Dodgers not only clinched the division title, they also reached the 100-win mark Saturday with a victory at San Francisco. Los Angeles has won at least 100 games in each of the past three full seasons and four times in the last five full seasons.
09-18-22 | Bears +11 v. Packers | Top | 10-27 | Loss | -128 | 7 h 46 m | Show |
After spending the last three seasons looking up at the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North standings, the Chicago Bears head into Lambeau Field in an unusual position. The Bears (1-0) lead the Packers (0-1) in the division race for the first time since 2018, when Chicago last earned the NFC North title. The Packers have won the NFC North every year since and are 6-0 against the Bears during that stretch. Chicago would love to take a two-game edge over the three-time defending division champions by winning Sunday night. Even with the Bears coming off a win and the Packers coming off a loss, Green Bay is a 9 1/2-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
09-18-22 | Texans +10 v. Broncos | Top | 9-16 | Win | 100 | 3 h 1 m | Show |
Texans coach Lovie Smith had some rather recent game film to review as he developed his defensive game plan for Sunday - Wilson led the Seahawks to a 33-13 win at Houston last December. "Experience of being in that situation, of seeing him on the other side, game planning for him, it doesn't matter where you are, the person doesn't change a lot," Smith said. "Maybe some of the calls have. I see a similar offensive attack when we played the Seahawks last year. Nowadays, quarterbacks have a big say in what teams do, especially guys that have been around the game for a while." Wilson didn't have much of a say in how things ended Monday night in Seattle, and he vowed to speak up next time Hackett considers taking the ball out of his hands in a game-defining moment. "(I) always trust his decisions and everything else, but I'm also always ready to go try to do it if we need to," Wilson said. Either way, the Broncos insist they've moved on. The Broncos will be without Justin Simmons for the first time since 2017 after the star safety injured a thigh in the opener. Second-year pro-Caden Sterns replaces the ironman who has started 66 consecutive games. The Texans got big contributions from two new faces in Week 1. D-lineman Jerry Hughes, who spent the last nine seasons in Buffalo, had two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in a 20-20 tie with Indianapolis. O.J. Howard, who signed Sept. 2 after his release by the Bills, became the third tight end in NFL history to catch a pair of TD passes in his first game with his new team.
09-17-22 | Fresno State v. USC -10.5 | Top | 17-45 | Win | 100 | 10 h 28 m | Show |
Seventh-ranked USC returns home to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday for a nonconference game against Mountain West Conference favorite Fresno State. The Trojans (2-0) continued to dazzle offensively early into first-year head coach Lincoln Riley's tenure last week at Stanford -- at least, in the first half. USC scored five first-half touchdowns of the Pac-12 Conference opener but managed a pair of field goals in the second half against the Cardinal. It marked the second time in as many games that the Trojans did not have to punt until the fourth quarter of a blowout win. Quarterback Caleb Williams went 20-for-27 for 341 yards with four more touchdown passes, giving him six for the season to go with the team's five rushing touchdowns and three field goals. His performance earned Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week. Jordan Addison has four of those touchdown receptions among his 12 catches for an average of 113.0 yards a game. The Trojans offense cooled off, however, and Stanford pushed around the USC defense for 221 yards on a 441-yard day of total offense. Yet, the SC defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing two turnovers inside the 3-yard line.
09-15-22 | Chargers +4 v. Chiefs | Top | 24-27 | Win | 100 | 5 h 48 m | Show |
The Kansas City Chiefs have taken on an almost unbeatable air in the AFC West over the past six years, not only winning the division each time but losing just six games total against some of their longest-standing rivals. Except when it comes to the Los Angeles Chargers. They've showed no fear in splitting their past four meetings with Kansas City, including a win in Arrowhead Stadium last season. And after making a series of offseason moves - like signing Khalil Mack, who had three of their five sacks in their opener against the Raiders - designed to deal with Patrick Mahomes and rest of the Chiefs' dynamic offense, the Chargers have every reason to be confident about facing the Chiefs again on Thursday night.
09-13-22 | Los Angeles FC v. Minnesota United +0.5 | Top | 1-1 | Win | 100 | 5 h 24 m | Show |
LAFC is 0-1-2 all-time in Minnesota, making the Loons one of two opponents the team has visited at least three times and never beaten. LA Galaxy is the other (0-5-2). LAFC's appeal of a red card issued to defender Ryan Hollingshead in Saturday's 2-1 loss to FC Dallas was denied, leaving him suspended for this game.
