TCU +3 v. Texas Tech | Top | 28-35 |
Loss | -110 | 10 h 48 m | Show |
Preseason goals have been adjusted for TCU and Texas Tech heading into Thursday night's Big 12 Conference showdown in Lubbock. But that doesn't mean there will be any less intensity when the rivals meet. The visiting Horned Frogs (4-4, 2-3) have found life more treacherous this season compared with 2022, when a stretch of strong play blended with good fortune to vault the team into the national championship game. For the Red Raiders (3-5, 2-3), a spate of injuries -- especially at quarterback -- and some close-call losses have punctured the chance to fulfill various preseason prognostications that pegged them as a conference sleeper. Now the two proud programs will collide, each coming off a bye week and each eager to bounce back after tough-to-stomach losses. On Oct. 21, TCU absorbed a 41-3 rout at Kansas State, and Texas Tech lost 27-14 at BYU in a game when the Red Raiders' five turnovers derailed any chance of the team keeping pace with the Cougars. Though he downplayed it, this will be the first trip back to Lubbock for TCU's Sonny Dykes as a head coach at the school where his father, Spike Dykes, won 82 games from 1986-99.(FLM) |

The New Orleans Pelicans are no strangers to adversity. It's been a constant theme in recent years as Zion Williamson and others have missed significant playing time. The Pelicans hope the latest bit of misfortune will be a bump in the road, though it could stretch through Wednesday's road game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. New Orleans star forward Brandon Ingram is listed as questionable for the game after being scratched from Monday's loss to Golden State about an hour before tip-off due to right knee soreness. The Pelicans did get some good news concerning Ingram's knee, though. |

The Toronto Raptors know that they must begin to find better scoring chances for Pascal Siakam starting Monday night against the visiting Portland Trail Blazers. Siakam scored only 11 points Saturday night in a 114-107 home loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in the return of former Toronto coach Nick Nurse. The Raptors, who were playing the second of back-to-back games on Saturday, will be facing a team playing its second game in two nights. Portland opened a three-game road trip with a 126-98 loss to the 76ers on Sunday night. The Trail Blazers are winless in three games this season. The winless Portland Trail Blazers will continue their search for scoring in the absence of Anfernee Simons as they open a three-game trip, starting Sunday night against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Trail Blazers made the cross-country flight Saturday shackled with an 0-2 record, the first loss having been more painful than the second by virtue of Simons breaking his right thumb during a 123-111 setback against the Clippers in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Portland then immediately experienced the impact of losing its top returning scorer when the Trail Blazers put up just 97 points in their home opener, a 102-97 loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday. The Trail Blazers shot just 39.8 percent overall and went just 9 of 32 on 3-pointers. Simons is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. (Stats) |

The Toronto Raptors will face former coach Nick Nurse for the first time when the Philadelphia 76ers visit on Saturday night. The Raptors have split their first two games under new coach Darko Rajakovic. They lost 104-103 in overtime to the host Chicago Bulls on Friday despite a triple-double from Scottie Barnes, who had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Chicago's Alex Caruso sank the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left in OT. Toronto won its season opener at home on Wednesday, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 97-94. The 76ers lost their first game under Nurse 118-117 to the host Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday. Nurse coached the Raptors from 2018-19 until the end of last season, when he was fired after Toronto lost a play-in game against the Bulls following a 41-41 regular season. The 76ers hired him on June 1. Nurse guided the Raptors to their only NBA championship in 2019. |

Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi could etch his name in the record books on Friday when he takes the mound for Game 1 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Arlington, Texas. Eovaldi (4-0, 2.42 ERA) is aiming to become the first pitcher to win five starts in the playoffs. Randy Johnson (2001), Francisco Rodriguez (2002) and Stephen Strasburg (2019) have recorded five wins in a single postseason, but each of the three pocketed a victory in relief. Eovaldi, 33, allowed two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings in a 9-2 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday. The Texas native has struck out 28 batters against just four walks in 26 innings in the postseason. Although Eovaldi is making his first career start in a World Series, it's not his only appearance in the Fall Classic. He made three relief appearances with the Boston Red Sox in the 2018 World Series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the loser of the epic 18-inning Game 3 when he served up Max Muncy's walk-off homer. Eovaldi allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits in six-plus innings of relief in that game. |

Win | 100 | 7 h 55 m | Show |
The reigning NBA champion Denver Nuggets go on the road for the first time in the 2023-24 season Friday when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies. Denver began its defense of the first championship in franchise history with a 119-107 defeat of the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. The 2020-21 and 2021-22 Most Valuable Player and last season's Finals MVP Nikola Jokic tipped off the campaign with a 29-point, 13-rebound, 11-assist triple-double. Jokic has averaged 19.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 26 career matchups with Memphis. Last season, Jokic scored no more than 18 points in any of Denver's three meetings with the Grizzlies but recorded triple-doubles in each of the Nuggets' two wins. On Tuesday, all five Denver starters scored in double figures and three notched at least 20 points. Jamal Murray shot 8-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range en route to 21, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope went 8-of-12 from the floor for 20 points. The Nuggets also got a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double from Michael Porter Jr. in the season opener. Prior to the game, the team received its 2022-23 championship rings. |

Bucs +10 v. Bills | Top | 18-24 |
Win | 100 | 8 h 54 m | Show |
Facing a short week, and questions about Buffalo’s sluggish offense and injury-depleted defense, Bills coach Sean McDermott entrusted his players in believing they’ve been together long enough to know how to tackle adversity. “Listen, we’ve shown that we know how to win, and we know how to figure things out, and we know how to develop players and find the answers and solutions,” McDermott said, in preparing to host Tampa Bay on Thursday night. “We’re used to this. This is what we do.” The three-time defending AFC East champion Bills (4-3) are suddenly in turmoil following a rash of injuries sidelining three key defensive starters and not getting help from a slow-starting offense that’s combined for 10 points in the first half in losing two of its past three. The message was notably similar in Tampa Bay (3-3), where coach Todd Bowles dismissed questions about the Bills struggles by placing the emphasis on his Buccaneers to respond after dropping two straight and three of four. |

The Minnesota Wild will look to carry their offensive momentum into Thursday's road matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Wild rallied for five goals in the third period on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. Ryan Hartman recorded a five-point game -- a hat trick and two assists. The five points tied his career high, and the hat trick was the second of his career. Hartman's other three-goal performance occurred on Jan. 8, 2017, when he played for the Chicago Blackhawks. "We (Mats Zuccarello and Kirill Kaprizov) were able to find each other early," Hartman said. "We kind of talked about it as a line. We've been watching some shifts together, and too many times we were trying to get inside or were forcing it a little bit. You know, I think we've kind of been keeping it and waiting for our moment to strike as opposed to forcing it. |

Both teams will be playing the second of back-to-back nights after the visiting Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 on Tuesday while the host Capitals dropped a 4-1 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tyler Toffoli had a hat trick for the Devils, Jack Hughes continued his torrid start with four assists and Vitek Vanecek made 27 saves for New Jersey, which will look for its third straight win. The Devils edged the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime on Friday. Hughes has four goals and 10 assists in five games, including back-to-back four-point contests. |

The New York Knicks mostly stood pat this summer following their most successful season in a decade. Meanwhile, after coming within one win of a second straight trip to the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics made a series of splashy trades and signings. Neither team will have to wait long for the first referendum on their respective approaches, as host New York will face the Celtics on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams. The Knicks finished fifth in the Eastern Conference last season at 47-35 and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs before falling to the eventual conference champion Miami Heat in a six-game semifinal series. Getting past the Cavaliers gave New York its first postseason series victory since the spring of 2013. The Knicks employed six coaches while missing the playoffs in the subsequent seven seasons before Tom Thibodeau arrived and steered New York to a 41-31 record and a first-round exit in the spring of 2021. |

Kevin Durant begins his 17th season by experiencing a first when the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors tip off their 2023-24 campaigns at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Tuesday night. Immediately following the NBA opener between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, with the Nuggets to receive their 2023 championship rings, the TNT spotlight will shine on the Suns and Warriors, both of whom will be beginning a quest to dethrone the defending champions. Seeded fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Western playoffs last year, the Suns and Warriors saw their championship bids end in the conference semifinals, the Suns falling in six games to the Nuggets, the Warriors likewise losing four of six to the Lakers. The opening matchup also gives the 35-year-old Durant a chance to perform in front of the fans he thrilled for three seasons while leading Golden State to championships in 2017 and 2018. He eventually left the Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal with the Brooklyn Nets, and has made just one return to the San Francisco Bay Area, that coming in February 2021 while fans were not allowed to attend games at the Chase Center due to COVID-19 precautions. He has never faced the Warriors anywhere since joining the Suns in February in a blockbuster four-team deal. Durant won't see Golden State defensive ace Draymond Green on the floor. Green missed the entire preseason with a sprained his left ankle and was ruled out of the opener on Monday. |

Lakers v. Nuggets -4.5 | Top | 107-119 |
Win | 100 | 7 h 29 m | Show |
The Denver Nuggets spent the offseason celebrating while the Los Angeles Lakers were simmering. Denver is in unchartered territory as the reigning NBA champions after an impressive 16-4 run through the postseason last spring. One of the teams in the Nuggets' path was Los Angeles, whom they swept in the Western Conference finals. The Lakers don't have to wait for another shot at the Nuggets, but they will have to witness them raise their championship banner when the teams open the NBA season Tuesday night in Denver. The Nuggets had never beaten Los Angeles in the playoffs before last season, and while it was a sweep, the games were close. That didn't stop Denver from relishing the series win, and head coach Michael Malone lit the fuse in the immediate aftermath of the victory. |

49ers v. Vikings +7 | Top | 17-22 |

Brock Purdy's fast rise with the San Francisco 49ers has had the quality of a feel-good movie, the rare quarterback drafted in the seventh round to run the offense for a Super Bowl contender by the end of his rookie year and pick up in his second season where he left off. Even following the worst start of his young career, a 19-17 loss at Cleveland that included his first interception of 2023 and stripped the 49ers (5-1) of their undefeated status, Purdy is sitting pretty. He just probably won't be able to stand still in his attempt to get back on track. San Francisco plays at Minnesota on Monday night, and Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is sure to empty the playbook with as many different pressures as he can find. “You can never just relax and just call a play or run a play, because there’s always a thousand things that can go wrong just because of the threat of what they do in any situation,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “They’re on you a lot with that. They get you to make mistakes in that way.” The Vikings have sent five or more rushers on 60.5% percent of passing plays they've faced this season, the most by any NFL team since Sportradar began tracking blitzes in 2007. The next most frequent blitzing team was Arizona (51.1%) in 2013. The league average for 2023, according to Sportradar, is 29%. The ultra-aggressive strategy, in an era when extra rushers are being used less often in favor of thicker and safer zone coverage, has yielded mixed results for the Vikings (2-4). |

ndrafted rookie Tyson Bagent will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears when they host Las Vegas on Sunday with Justin Fields recovering from a dislocated right thumb. The Raiders will also be going with a backup quarterback, with all signs pointing to veteran Brian Hoyer replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo. Las Vegas' other option is rookie Aidan O'Connell. Both starters left games last week. Fields got hurt when he was sacked early in the third quarter against Minnesota. Chicago (1-5) lost for the 15th time in 16 games, falling 19-13 to the Vikings. Garoppolo missed the second half of a 21-17 win over New England with a back injury. Bagent, who went undrafted last spring after a record-setting career at Division II Shepherd University in West Virginia, is ready for his opportunity. He said he and his dad, Travis, had a feeling early on that he would play in the NFL. But he wasn't sure he would get a chance to start again after his final college game. |

Islanders v. Sabres -1.5 | Top | 1-3 |
Win | 203 | 8 h 14 m | Show |
The Buffalo Sabres are accustomed to lamenting their performance on defense. For the defensively oriented New York Islanders, their Friday loss was a jarring and unusual experience. A pair of teams looking to bounce back from porous efforts are slated to meet Saturday night when the Sabres host the Islanders in a battle of Eastern Conference rivals. The Sabres, in the midst of a four-game homestand, were off Friday after falling to the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Thursday. The Islanders will be completing their first back-to-back set of the season after losing to the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in overtime on Friday in Elmont, N.Y. The Thursday defeat cost the Sabres -- who beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday -- a chance to build their first winning streak of the season. Buffalo overcame a trio of one-goal deficits on Thursday but never took the lead against the Flames, whose four go-ahead goals tied for second most in franchise history. Adam Ruzicka scored the game-winner for the Flames at the 4:35 mark of the third, just 81 seconds after JJ Peterka collected the tying goal for the Sabres. Buffalo, which is in the midst of an NHL-record 12-year playoff drought, has allowed 14 goals through four games this season. The Sabres gave up 1,277 goals the previous five seasons, third most in the NHL, ahead of only the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. |

The Jacksonville Jaguars have looked like one of the hottest teams in the NFL during the past three weeks. But that was with a healthy franchise quarterback. Now Trevor Lawrence aims to play through a sprained left knee as the Jaguars (4-2) visit the New Orleans Saints (3-3) on Thursday night. Lawrence's injury occurred in the final minutes of a 37-20 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday, leaving him little more than three full days to recover before Jacksonville's offense goes up against one of the top-performing defenses in the NFL. The Saints rank fifth in the NFL in total defense and fifth against the pass. Brock Nelson enjoyed a breakout year last season when he followed a career-high 37 goals by scoring 36 times and producing a career-best 75 points to help the New York Islanders reach the playoffs. Nelson started the new campaign strong, recording a multi-point game in the season opener, and he will attempt to help the Islanders win their second straight contest on Tuesday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes in Elmont, N.Y. The Islanders are seeking their first 2-0-0 start since opening the 2014-15 season with a four-game winning streak. They began this season by earning a 3-2 victory in their home opener, beating the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Nelson scored New York's first goal of the season 5:57 into the contest and then collected the primary assist on Kyle Palmieri's tally late in the opening period. Casey Cizikas scored on a redirection of Adam Pelech's shot in the third after the Islanders squandered a two-goal lead. Nelson started the season on a line with Pierre Engvall and Palmieri, and that trio combined for four points and eight of New York's 29 shots on goal. It was a game that seemed to mirror many from last season, when the Islanders won 15 games decided by one goal. |

Tampa Bay opened the season by rallying with four third-period goals to win 5-3 over Nashville at home. Since then, however, the Lightning fell 6-4 at Detroit and yielded the final three goals during Sunday's 5-2 loss at Ottawa. |

After opening the season by beating the New Jersey Devils, the Coyotes will attempt to win their first two games of a season for the first time since 2015-16 when they visit the Rangers, who'll hope to improve defensively in their home opener on Monday night. Arizona is opening the season with a four-game road trip before hosting Anaheim in its home opener Saturday. The Coyotes began the trip by scoring the first two goals and giving up three straight before getting a 4-3 victory in a shootout over the Devils on Friday. Nick Schmaltz scored the tying goal on a power play for 3-3 in the third after Matt Dumba and Sean Durzi scored. Schmaltz also scored in the shootout along with Nick Bjugstad, while goalie Karel Vejmelka made 33 saves and two more in the shootout. |

Rangers +1.5 v. Astros | Top | 2-0 |
Win | 100 | 31 h 48 m | Show |
Texas has outscored their opponents by 20 runs through their first five games in the postseason, which is the second-biggest differential through a team's first five games in a playoff. That trails only the 2019 Yankees, who began with a +22 differential. The Rangers have 23 extra-base hits through five games. That is the most through a team's first five games of a postseason since the 1999 Red Sox had 28 through five games. |

Win | 100 | 13 h 51 m | Show |
Colorado has recently taken a dip after a magical 3-0 start, but the Buffaloes have a chance to rediscover their prowess when they face hapless Stanford in Pac-12 play on Friday night in Boulder, Colo. While Colorado ended an eight-game Pac-12 losing streak with last Saturday's 27-24 win at Arizona State, the Cardinal (1-4, 0-3 Pac-12) have dropped 17 of their past 18 conference games, including seven straight. Stanford is coming off a bye after losing its previous four contests. Colorado (4-2, 1-2) lost to then-No. 10 Oregon and then-No. 8 Southern California in back-to-back weeks before escaping with a victory against the Sun Devils thanks to Alejandro Mata's 43-yard field goal with 12 seconds left. Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders was highly irritated with his team's performance. |

Loss | -110 | 12 h 34 m | Show |
The Denver Broncos are on their sixth head or interim coach since their most recent win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Perhaps Sean Payton will be the one to finally end the losing streak. The Broncos head to Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night for the first of two games against Kansas City this season toting one of the most incredible skids in a league that prides itself on its parity. Denver has not beaten the Chiefs since Week 2 of the 2015 season when Gary Kubiak - and Peyton Manning - proceeded to lead the Broncos to a victory in the Super Bowl. I don't think they win here either, but it will be closer than most think. |

Braves v. Phillies +1.5 | Top | 1-3 |
Win | 100 | 4 h 41 m | Show |
The Phillies hammered six home runs on Wednesday night, including two apiece from Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos, to win Game 3 in a blowout 10-2 and take a 2-1 series lead. The hype around "Red October" in Philadelphia is back after the Phillies overcame a difficult loss in Game 2. Atlanta rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning before ending the game on an 8-5-3 double play, in which Bryce Harper was caught too far from first base to double back in time. Turns out, that was just what the Phillies needed as the series shifted home. |

Red Wings v. Devils -1.5 | Top | 3-4 |
Loss | -100 | 3 h 22 m | Show |
The Devils racked up 52 wins and 112 points last season after failing to qualify for the postseason the previous four campaigns. They lost to Carolina in the second round of the playoffs. New Jersey acquired 34-goal scorer Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames but otherwise will ride with the group that produced the third-most points in the league last season. The Devils are led by Jack Hughes, who had team-leading totals in goals (43), assists (56) and points (99) in 78 games last season. He added 11 more points (six goals, five assists) in 12 postseason contests. The top overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft should be even more dangerous after his breakout season. |

Leaning on home crowd, Aces eager to get past Liberty in Game 2 As if the best team in the WNBA needed any more advantages, the Las Vegas Aces have been able to capitalize on the comforts of home. Now the top-seeded Aces will set out to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the WNBA Finals over the second-seeded New York Liberty on Wednesday night in Las Vegas. The Aces opened the best-of-five series with a 99-82 home victory over the Liberty, outscoring them by 20 in the second half to pull away. In addition to improving to 6-0 this postseason -- with four wins coming by 14 points or better -- they also won their eighth straight home playoff game dating back to the 2022 semifinal round. Kelsey Plum pointed out that the Aces, who have had to play only two road games (regular season or playoffs) since Aug. 31, have benefited from using the wellness resources at their team facility for this extended stretch. |

Green Bay has had extra time to think about its 34-20 loss to Detroit, a Thursday night game that gave the Packers last weekend off. The Packers, who are 2-2, certainly don't want to spend extra time stewing over another defeat should they lose Monday night at Las Vegas. But that's exactly what will happen if the Raiders properly defend their home field. This is the Packers' only game in a 23-day span. |

Rutgers (4-1, 1-1) is coming off a 52-3 nonconference rout of Wagner, bouncing back from a 31-7 loss at Michigan. Wisconsin's victory at Purdue was costly, however, as running back Chez Mellusi was lost for the season with a leg injury. With Mellusi out, the bulk of the ground game falls on Braelon Allen, who has a team-high 371 rushing yards at 7.1 yards per carry with six touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore Jackson Acker, who has 31 yards on eight carries, moves into the No. 2 spot. |

Oklahoma State has historically handled Kansas State at home in football. That history will be put to the test Friday night as the Wildcats visit the Cowboys in Stillwater, Okla. The Cowboys have won seven of the past eight home meetings since 2003, when they broke a nine-game overall losing streak to the Wildcats. Oklahoma State (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) is on a two-game skid, losing 33-7 at home to South Alabama on Sept. 16 and 34-27 at Iowa State in its most recent game on Sept. 23. |

The Tampa Bay Rays will need to locate their offense -- and their defense, for that matter -- if they wish to avert a second sweep in as many years in the American League wild-card series. Tampa Bay mustered just one run in 24 innings during last year's wild-card series against the Cleveland Guardians. After being shut out in the series opener on Tuesday, the fourth-seeded Rays will host the fifth-seeded Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon for Game 2 of their best-of-three series in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay produced just six hits and committed a franchise playoff-record four errors in a 4-0 setback to Texas in the series opener on Tuesday. |

Win | 100 | 34 h 46 m | Show |
The New York Giants are searching for answers and they face the task of playing Seattle on a day of the week the Seahawks own and in a stadium where they have never lost. The puzzling Giants (1-2), who were overmatched by both Dallas and San Francisco, will host the Seahawks (2-1) on Monday night. The Seahawks won 27-13 last year when the teams played at Seattle. Having the game at the Meadowlands is not going to make things any easier for the Giants. The Seahawks are 5-0 at MetLife Stadium, including the only Super Bowl title in franchise history. Three of the five wins have come against the Giants. And they are 28-12 all-time on Monday night, a .700 win percentage that is the best of any team. This also can be viewed as a must-win for New York, with games at Miami and Buffalo to follow. |

Utah (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) strives to remain unbeaten while increasing its offensive production when it battles No. 19 Oregon State (3-1, 0-1) in a Friday night Pac-12 clash at Corvallis, Ore. Star quarterback Cam Rising hasn't played since tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament during the Utes' Jan. 2 Rose Bowl loss to Penn State. Rising has been sharing time with Johnson in practice but has yet to be cleared for game duty. Bryson Barnes and Johnson split time the first two games before Johnson became the starter for the past two. However, Johnson wasn't the least bit happy with the meager 219 yards of total offense the Utes compiled during a 14-7 home victory over then-No. 22 UCLA last week. That won't be good enough tonight |

The Marlins' game vs. the Mets on Thursday night was suspended due to rain. Miami owns the tiebreaker over the Cubs. |
