Loss | -110 | 9 h 22 m | Show |
Syracuse must've been happy to have a week off, while Virginia Tech hopes its bye didn't slow the team's positive momentum. The Hokies aim for their third win in four games Thursday when they welcome the skidding Orange to Blacksburg, Va. Virginia Tech (3-4, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) has recovered from a three-game slide to defeat Pitt and Wake Forest over its last three outings, with a loss at No. 4 Florida State in between. In their most recent contest, the Hokies handled the Demon Deacons 30-13 as Kyron Drones threw two touchdown passes as part of a career-high 321-yard performance. Drones also ran for 59 yards and is just 16 yards behind Bhayshul Tuten (360) for the team lead. As a 6-foot-2 signal-caller with speed, Drones was compared to Syracuse's 6-foot-4 Garrett Shrader this week by Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry. |

76ers v. Bucks -6 | | 117-118 |
Loss | -110 | 7 h 23 m | Show |
The buzz surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks circles around the player they added in the offseason, while the noise coming out of Philadelphia centers on the player who just returned to the 76ers after a 10-day absence. Seven-time All-Star Damian Lillard will make his Bucks debut on Thursday when they open the season against the visiting 76ers, who reportedly will be without disgruntled 10-time All-Star James Harden. Milwaukee acquired Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers on Sept. 27 as part of a three-team trade. Lillard, 33, averaged a franchise-record 32.2 points per game in 2022-23, the third-highest clip in the league. Named one of the NBA's 75 greatest players of all-time in 2021, Lillard won Rookie of the Year honors in 2012-13 and is Portland's career leader in points (19,376) and 3-point field goals (2,387). |

The Boston Bruins are 6-0-0 for only the second time in franchise history. Blazers +9.5 v. Clippers | | 111-123 |
Loss | -115 | 13 h 28 m | Show |
While the Portland Trail Blazers will begin a new era Wednesday, the Los Angeles Clippers will look to get more out of a tenure that has not quite delivered as expected when the teams tip off their seasons in Los Angeles. For the first time in 12 seasons, Damian Lillard will not be on the Trail Blazers' roster after he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in September. And while the star power of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George remains in place for the Clippers, better health combined with elite play will be vital. A run to the NBA Finals has eluded Los Angeles in the four seasons the dynamic duo has been together on the West Coast. Leonard has played just 52 games over the past two seasons because of knee issues -- and never played more than 57 in any season since joining the Clippers in 2019 -- but the club is hopeful that problem can be mitigated. George has not exactly been the picture of health either, playing in 87 of a potential 164 regular-season games over the previous two seasons. |

Win | 100 | 10 h 44 m | Show |
A team that has scored 10 goals over its past two games squares off against one struggling to find the net when the New Jersey Devils face the Washington Capitals on Wednesday in Newark, N.J. Both teams will be playing the second of back-to-back nights after the visiting Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 on Tuesday while the host Capitals dropped a 4-1 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tyler Toffoli had a hat trick for the Devils, Jack Hughes continued his torrid start with four assists and Vitek Vanecek made 27 saves for New Jersey, which will look for its third straight win. The Devils edged the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime on Friday. Hughes has four goals and 10 assists in five games, including back-to-back four-point contests. |

Celtics v. Knicks +4 | Top | 108-104 |
Push | 0 | 10 h 4 m | Show |
The New York Knicks mostly stood pat this summer following their most successful season in a decade. Meanwhile, after coming within one win of a second straight trip to the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics made a series of splashy trades and signings. Neither team will have to wait long for the first referendum on their respective approaches, as host New York will face the Celtics on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams. The Knicks finished fifth in the Eastern Conference last season at 47-35 and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs before falling to the eventual conference champion Miami Heat in a six-game semifinal series. Getting past the Cavaliers gave New York its first postseason series victory since the spring of 2013. The Knicks employed six coaches while missing the playoffs in the subsequent seven seasons before Tom Thibodeau arrived and steered New York to a 41-31 record and a first-round exit in the spring of 2021. |

The Arizona Coyotes are standing tall through a challenging early schedule and are out to extend their success with a visit to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Despite playing four of their first five games on the road, the Coyotes are 3-2-0 to open the season. It is the first time since the 2015-16 season Arizona delivered three victories in its first five games. The Coyotes finally played their first home game Saturday and put together a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks when Clayton Keller and Jason Zucker scored goals. It was also the first time they won their home opener since October 2016. The Ducks tried to lean into the Coyotes with a tough, physical style of play and the Coyotes matched it and then some. |

Suns v. Warriors -3 | Top | 108-104 |
Loss | -110 | 10 h 8 m | Show |
Kevin Durant begins his 17th season by experiencing a first when the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors tip off their 2023-24 campaigns at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Tuesday night. Immediately following the NBA opener between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, with the Nuggets to receive their 2023 championship rings, the TNT spotlight will shine on the Suns and Warriors, both of whom will be beginning a quest to dethrone the defending champions. Seeded fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Western playoffs last year, the Suns and Warriors saw their championship bids end in the conference semifinals, the Suns falling in six games to the Nuggets, the Warriors likewise losing four of six to the Lakers. The opening matchup also gives the 35-year-old Durant a chance to perform in front of the fans he thrilled for three seasons while leading Golden State to championships in 2017 and 2018. He eventually left the Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal with the Brooklyn Nets, and has made just one return to the San Francisco Bay Area, that coming in February 2021 while fans were not allowed to attend games at the Chase Center due to COVID-19 precautions. He has never faced the Warriors anywhere since joining the Suns in February in a blockbuster four-team deal. Durant won't see Golden State defensive ace Draymond Green on the floor. Green missed the entire preseason with a sprained his left ankle and was ruled out of the opener on Monday. |

Lakers v. Nuggets -4.5 | Top | 107-119 |
Win | 100 | 7 h 29 m | Show |
The Denver Nuggets spent the offseason celebrating while the Los Angeles Lakers were simmering. Denver is in unchartered territory as the reigning NBA champions after an impressive 16-4 run through the postseason last spring. One of the teams in the Nuggets' path was Los Angeles, whom they swept in the Western Conference finals. The Lakers don't have to wait for another shot at the Nuggets, but they will have to witness them raise their championship banner when the teams open the NBA season Tuesday night in Denver. The Nuggets had never beaten Los Angeles in the playoffs before last season, and while it was a sweep, the games were close. That didn't stop Denver from relishing the series win, and head coach Michael Malone lit the fuse in the immediate aftermath of the victory. |

49ers v. Vikings +7 | Top | 17-22 |
Win | 100 | 31 h 17 m | Show |
Brock Purdy's fast rise with the San Francisco 49ers has had the quality of a feel-good movie, the rare quarterback drafted in the seventh round to run the offense for a Super Bowl contender by the end of his rookie year and pick up in his second season where he left off. Even following the worst start of his young career, a 19-17 loss at Cleveland that included his first interception of 2023 and stripped the 49ers (5-1) of their undefeated status, Purdy is sitting pretty. He just probably won't be able to stand still in his attempt to get back on track. San Francisco plays at Minnesota on Monday night, and Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is sure to empty the playbook with as many different pressures as he can find. “You can never just relax and just call a play or run a play, because there’s always a thousand things that can go wrong just because of the threat of what they do in any situation,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “They’re on you a lot with that. They get you to make mistakes in that way.” The Vikings have sent five or more rushers on 60.5% percent of passing plays they've faced this season, the most by any NFL team since Sportradar began tracking blitzes in 2007. The next most frequent blitzing team was Arizona (51.1%) in 2013. The league average for 2023, according to Sportradar, is 29%. The ultra-aggressive strategy, in an era when extra rushers are being used less often in favor of thicker and safer zone coverage, has yielded mixed results for the Vikings (2-4). |

Win | 100 | 26 h 48 m | Show |
Kenny Pickett was an early-enrollee freshman at Pitt when he first met Aaron Donald, who still spends every offseason training at his alma mater. Although the teenage quarterback understandably didn't become fast friends with the All-Pro defensive lineman, Pickett credits the Los Angeles Rams star with more help in his football career than even Donald realizes. The Steelers have made it a point to bring left tackle Broderick Jones and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. - their top two picks in the draft - along slowly. It may be nearing time to take the training wheels off. Jones played well in his first NFL start two weeks ago against Baltimore, making his first career interception off Lamar Jackson in the end zone to set up Pittsburgh's game-winning drive. Jones could return to the bench against Los Angeles with Dan Moore likely returning from a knee injury, but Porter could see more playing time. He played a season-high 40% of the defensive snaps against Baltimore and has the size at 6-foot-2 to match up with Rams rookie sensation Puka Nacua. |

Win | 100 | 23 h 56 m | Show |
ndrafted rookie Tyson Bagent will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears when they host Las Vegas on Sunday with Justin Fields recovering from a dislocated right thumb. The Raiders will also be going with a backup quarterback, with all signs pointing to veteran Brian Hoyer replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo. Las Vegas' other option is rookie Aidan O'Connell. Both starters left games last week. Fields got hurt when he was sacked early in the third quarter against Minnesota. Chicago (1-5) lost for the 15th time in 16 games, falling 19-13 to the Vikings. Garoppolo missed the second half of a 21-17 win over New England with a back injury. Bagent, who went undrafted last spring after a record-setting career at Division II Shepherd University in West Virginia, is ready for his opportunity. He said he and his dad, Travis, had a feeling early on that he would play in the NFL. But he wasn't sure he would get a chance to start again after his final college game. |

Islanders v. Sabres -1.5 | Top | 1-3 |
Win | 203 | 8 h 14 m | Show |
The Buffalo Sabres are accustomed to lamenting their performance on defense. For the defensively oriented New York Islanders, their Friday loss was a jarring and unusual experience. A pair of teams looking to bounce back from porous efforts are slated to meet Saturday night when the Sabres host the Islanders in a battle of Eastern Conference rivals. The Sabres, in the midst of a four-game homestand, were off Friday after falling to the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Thursday. The Islanders will be completing their first back-to-back set of the season after losing to the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in overtime on Friday in Elmont, N.Y. The Thursday defeat cost the Sabres -- who beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday -- a chance to build their first winning streak of the season. Buffalo overcame a trio of one-goal deficits on Thursday but never took the lead against the Flames, whose four go-ahead goals tied for second most in franchise history. Adam Ruzicka scored the game-winner for the Flames at the 4:35 mark of the third, just 81 seconds after JJ Peterka collected the tying goal for the Sabres. Buffalo, which is in the midst of an NHL-record 12-year playoff drought, has allowed 14 goals through four games this season. The Sabres gave up 1,277 goals the previous five seasons, third most in the NHL, ahead of only the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. |

Temple’s defense isn’t stopping a thing. It hasn’t allowed fewer than 41 points in any of the last four games, it’s bad against the run, worse against the pass, and it’s not helping itself with takeaways - there haven’t been any since taking the ball away once in each of the first two games. Loss | -110 | 15 h 16 m | Show |
The Jacksonville Jaguars have looked like one of the hottest teams in the NFL during the past three weeks. But that was with a healthy franchise quarterback. Now Trevor Lawrence aims to play through a sprained left knee as the Jaguars (4-2) visit the New Orleans Saints (3-3) on Thursday night. Lawrence's injury occurred in the final minutes of a 37-20 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday, leaving him little more than three full days to recover before Jacksonville's offense goes up against one of the top-performing defenses in the NFL. The Saints rank fifth in the NFL in total defense and fifth against the pass. Their eight interceptions puts them in a six-way tie for second most in the NFL (a group that also includes the Jaguars). |

The Phillies took the series lead Monday night, when they held off a series of late rallies by the Diamondbacks to record a 5-3 win. Kyle Schwarber homered on the first pitch of the home half of the first and Bryce Harper -- celebrating his 31st birthday -- went deep two batters later for Philadelphia. Brock Nelson enjoyed a breakout year last season when he followed a career-high 37 goals by scoring 36 times and producing a career-best 75 points to help the New York Islanders reach the playoffs. Nelson started the new campaign strong, recording a multi-point game in the season opener, and he will attempt to help the Islanders win their second straight contest on Tuesday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes in Elmont, N.Y. The Islanders are seeking their first 2-0-0 start since opening the 2014-15 season with a four-game winning streak. They began this season by earning a 3-2 victory in their home opener, beating the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Nelson scored New York's first goal of the season 5:57 into the contest and then collected the primary assist on Kyle Palmieri's tally late in the opening period. Casey Cizikas scored on a redirection of Adam Pelech's shot in the third after the Islanders squandered a two-goal lead. Nelson started the season on a line with Pierre Engvall and Palmieri, and that trio combined for four points and eight of New York's 29 shots on goal. It was a game that seemed to mirror many from last season, when the Islanders won 15 games decided by one goal. |

Stamkos could miss a second consecutive contest as the Lightning again try for their initial road victory Tuesday night. Tampa Bay opened the season by rallying with four third-period goals to win 5-3 over Nashville at home. Since then, however, the Lightning fell 6-4 at Detroit and yielded the final three goals during Sunday's 5-2 loss at Ottawa. |

After opening the season by beating the New Jersey Devils, the Coyotes will attempt to win their first two games of a season for the first time since 2015-16 when they visit the Rangers, who'll hope to improve defensively in their home opener on Monday night. Arizona is opening the season with a four-game road trip before hosting Anaheim in its home opener Saturday. The Coyotes began the trip by scoring the first two goals and giving up three straight before getting a 4-3 victory in a shootout over the Devils on Friday. Nick Schmaltz scored the tying goal on a power play for 3-3 in the third after Matt Dumba and Sean Durzi scored. Schmaltz also scored in the shootout along with Nick Bjugstad, while goalie Karel Vejmelka made 33 saves and two more in the shootout. |

While Colorado ended an eight-game Pac-12 losing streak with last Saturday's 27-24 win at Arizona State, the Cardinal (1-4, 0-3 Pac-12) have dropped 17 of their past 18 conference games, including seven straight. Stanford is coming off a bye after losing its previous four contests. Colorado (4-2, 1-2) lost to then-No. 10 Oregon and then-No. 8 Southern California in back-to-back weeks before escaping with a victory against the Sun Devils thanks to Alejandro Mata's 43-yard field goal with 12 seconds left. The Broncos head to Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night for the first of two games against Kansas City this season toting one of the most incredible skids in a league that prides itself on its parity. Denver has not beaten the Chiefs since Week 2 of the 2015 season when Gary Kubiak - and Peyton Manning - proceeded to lead the Broncos to a victory in the Super Bowl. The hype around "Red October" in Philadelphia is back after the Phillies overcame a difficult loss in Game 2. Atlanta rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning before ending the game on an 8-5-3 double play, in which Bryce Harper was caught too far from first base to double back in time. Turns out, that was just what the Phillies needed as the series shifted home. |

New Jersey acquired 34-goal scorer Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames but otherwise will ride with the group that produced the third-most points in the league last season. The Devils are led by Jack Hughes, who had team-leading totals in goals (43), assists (56) and points (99) in 78 games last season. He added 11 more points (six goals, five assists) in 12 postseason contests. The top overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft should be even more dangerous after his breakout season. |

Leaning on home crowd, Aces eager to get past Liberty in Game 2 As if the best team in the WNBA needed any more advantages, the Las Vegas Aces have been able to capitalize on the comforts of home. Now the top-seeded Aces will set out to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the WNBA Finals over the second-seeded New York Liberty on Wednesday night in Las Vegas. The Aces opened the best-of-five series with a 99-82 home victory over the Liberty, outscoring them by 20 in the second half to pull away. In addition to improving to 6-0 this postseason -- with four wins coming by 14 points or better -- they also won their eighth straight home playoff game dating back to the 2022 semifinal round. Kelsey Plum pointed out that the Aces, who have had to play only two road games (regular season or playoffs) since Aug. 31, have benefited from using the wellness resources at their team facility for this extended stretch. |

Now, the focus shifts to Houston right-hander Jose Urquidy. He went 3-3 with a 5.29 ERA in 16 appearances (10 starts) for the Astros during the regular season but has not yet pitched during the playoffs this year. The 28-year-old has appeared in 12 career postseason games, making six starts. He is 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA in his playoff career, and he earned wins in both of his appearances in the 2021 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. In three career regular-season starts against Minnesota, Urquidy is 0-0 with a 2.93 ERA. He has walked two and struck out 17 in 15 1/3 innings. He also tossed 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball vs. the Twins in a 2020 AL wild-card series. Urquidy is eager to take the ball on for Game 4. The Twins will counter with Joe Ryan (11-10, 4.51 ERA in regular season). The 27-year-old right-hander will be making his postseason debut. His most recent outing came on Sept. 29 against the Colorado Rockies, when he gave up six runs on eight hits in five innings. Ryan spent several games ready in the bullpen but was not called upon in the AL wild-card series against the Toronto Blue Jays nor the ALDS up until now. |

Packers +2.5 v. Raiders | Top | 13-17 |
Loss | -115 | 10 h 8 m | Show |
Green Bay has had extra time to think about its 34-20 loss to Detroit, a Thursday night game that gave the Packers last weekend off. The Packers, who are 2-2, certainly don't want to spend extra time stewing over another defeat should they lose Monday night at Las Vegas. But that's exactly what will happen if the Raiders properly defend their home field. This is the Packers' only game in a 23-day span. |

Zach Wilson silenced his naysayers - including Hall of Famer Joe Namath - for at least one week when he had perhaps the best performance of his career against K.C. With fans clamoring for newly signed backup Trevor Siemian, Wilson completed a career-best 28 passes, threw for two TDs and ran for a 2-point conversion to go with a career-high 105.2 passer rating. Next he’ll face a struggling Broncos defense with a chance to show last week was no fluke. I think it was. |

They're the first team to blow a lead of 23+ points and still win since the Bills blew a 28-3 lead against the Rams in Week 3, 2020, but still won 35-32.The Eagles defense has been hearing whispers that they may not be as good as their record indicates. Kentucky v. Georgia -14 | | 13-51 |
Win | 100 | 15 h 12 m | Show |
Top-ranked Georgia seeks to extend its national-best winning streak to 23 consecutive games when it battles No. 20 Kentucky on Saturday in Southeastern Conference play at Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0 SEC) have beaten the Wildcats (5-0, 2-0) 13 consecutive times since losing 34-27 at home in 2009. Two-time defending national champion Georgia hasn't looked as formidable as the past few seasons but is once again the class of the SEC as the regular season nears the midway point. However, the Bulldogs trailed by 10 points early last weekend before rallying for a 27-20 road win over Auburn. Carson Beck tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Brock Bowers with 2:52 remaining to win it. While Bowers (30 receptions, 413 yards) is an accomplished star, Beck is quickly making a name for himself as the quarterback who follows two-time national champion Stetson Bennett. Beck has passed for 1,497 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He has completed 72.1 percent of his throws. |

The Badgers (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) had a bye last week after opening their conference schedule with a 38-17 victory at Purdue. Rutgers (4-1, 1-1) is coming off a 52-3 nonconference rout of Wagner, bouncing back from a 31-7 loss at Michigan. Wisconsin's victory at Purdue was costly, however, as running back Chez Mellusi was lost for the season with a leg injury. With Mellusi out, the bulk of the ground game falls on Braelon Allen, who has a team-high 371 rushing yards at 7.1 yards per carry with six touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore Jackson Acker, who has 31 yards on eight carries, moves into the No. 2 spot. |

Win | 100 | 16 h 1 m | Show |
The Fighting Illini allowed a season-low 406 yards to Purdue but gave up 31 points on five red-zone possessions. For the season Illinois has yielded 23 scores on 26 trips inside its 20-yard line, compared to 23 on 31 all of 2022. Nebraska came up scoreless in its two red-zone possessions against Michigan and has been inside the opposing 20 on only 12 occasions this season. The Cornhuskers will continue to go with sophomore Heinrich Haarberg at quarterback, even with Jeff Sims getting closer to 100 percent following a high ankle sprain. Haarberg is Nebraska's leading rusher (270 yards), but had minus-2 against Michigan, so there could be a splitting of snaps. |

Oklahoma State has historically handled Kansas State at home in football. That history will be put to the test Friday night as the Wildcats visit the Cowboys in Stillwater, Okla. The Cowboys have won seven of the past eight home meetings since 2003, when they broke a nine-game overall losing streak to the Wildcats. Oklahoma State (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) is on a two-game skid, losing 33-7 at home to South Alabama on Sept. 16 and 34-27 at Iowa State in its most recent game on Sept. 23. |

The Tampa Bay Rays will need to locate their offense -- and their defense, for that matter -- if they wish to avert a second sweep in as many years in the American League wild-card series. Tampa Bay mustered just one run in 24 innings during last year's wild-card series against the Cleveland Guardians. After being shut out in the series opener on Tuesday, the fourth-seeded Rays will host the fifth-seeded Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon for Game 2 of their best-of-three series in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay produced just six hits and committed a franchise playoff-record four errors in a 4-0 setback to Texas in the series opener on Tuesday. |

The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to ace right-hander Corbin Burnes when the National League Central champions host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday in the opener of the best-of-three wild-card series. Burnes (10-8, 3.39 ERA) will be opposed by rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (3-9, 5.72 ERA), facing the Brewers for the first time. Arizona (84-78) won four of the six regular-season meetings with Milwaukee (92-70). The Brewers received devastating news Monday when they learned that right-hander Brandon Woodruff, scheduled to pitch the second game, would miss the entire series with a right shoulder injury, with the remainder of the postseason in doubt. |

The New York Giants are searching for answers and they face the task of playing Seattle on a day of the week the Seahawks own and in a stadium where they have never lost. The puzzling Giants (1-2), who were overmatched by both Dallas and San Francisco, will host the Seahawks (2-1) on Monday night. The Seahawks won 27-13 last year when the teams played at Seattle. Having the game at the Meadowlands is not going to make things any easier for the Giants. The Seahawks are 5-0 at MetLife Stadium, including the only Super Bowl title in franchise history. Three of the five wins have come against the Giants. And they are 28-12 all-time on Monday night, a .700 win percentage that is the best of any team. This also can be viewed as a must-win for New York, with games at Miami and Buffalo to follow. |
