Toronto is scheduled to start right-hander Kevin Gausman (9-8, 3.23 ERA) on Monday. In 11 career outings (10 starts) against Washington, Gausman is 6-3 with a 4.77 ERA. Gausman most recently allowed two runs on five hits in six innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. He took his second consecutive loss. Washington will turn to right-hander Josiah Gray (7-10, 3.85). He allowed two runs on five hits in six innings in his lone start against the Blue Jays back on Aug. 18, 2021. Gray took a no-decision in his last start, allowing one run on one hit in six innings against the New York Yankees last Tuesday. |

White Sox v. Orioles -1.5 | Top | 0-9 |
Win | 100 | 10 h 37 m | Show |
The White Sox list right-hander Michael Kopech (5-11, 4.95 ERA) as their starting pitcher for Monday night. He's coming off drastically different outings. On Aug. 18, he surrendered nine runs in four innings in a loss at Colorado. Then Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners, he threw four shutout innings while allowing one hit, though he walked four before departing with leg cramps. He has walked at least four batters in each of his last five outings, with 22 walks and 15 strikeouts during that stretch. Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (3-3, 5.38) will be Baltimore's starter. The rookie has lasted at least five innings in each of his seven starts since returning from Triple-A Norfolk in mid-July, exceeding the 90-pitch mark in all of those games. |

Cardinals left-hander Drew Rom (0-1, 14.73 ERA) is set to make his second career start in the series finale. Rom yielded eight runs (six earned) over 3 2/3 innings in an 11-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates last Monday. The 23-year-old struggled to recover from a rough first inning that included a costly error by second baseman Jose Fermin. Philadelphia will counter with right-hander Aaron Nola (11-8, 4.49), who allowed two runs over seven innings in a 10-4 win over the San Francisco Giants last Monday. Nola, 30, owns a 3.49 ERA in 11 home starts this season compared to a 5.26 mark in 15 outings away from Citizens Bank Park. |

Loss | -140 | 8 h 52 m | Show |
On Saturday, Clarke Schmidt (8-7, 4.68 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 6.38 ERA in four starts this month, having allowed 13 runs in 18 1/3 innings. He had won six consecutive decisions before logging a loss and a no-decision in his past two outings, respectively. In seven career appearances, three starts, against Tampa Bay, Schmidt is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. The Rays beat him on May 14 in New York, when he yielded seven runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Tampa Bay's Saturday starter, Tyler Glasnow (6-4, 3.35), will look to rebound from a rough outing last Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the host Angels. The 6-foot-8 right-hander surrendered seven runs (five earned) and eight hits in six innings during a 7-6 defeat. In eight career starts against the Yankees, Glasnow is 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA. He posted a victory at New York on July 31 after giving up a run on three hits in seven innings as the Rays prevailed 5-1. |

Royals +1.5 v. Mariners | | 5-7 |
Loss | -130 | 10 h 28 m | Show |
Friday's series opener is scheduled to feature two right-handers in Kansas City's Brady Singer (8-9, 5.04 ERA) and Seattle's Bryce Miller (8-4, 3.78). Singer is coming off a 6-4 loss to the host Chicago Cubs on Saturday, in which he allowed six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. In his previous start, Aug. 14 against Seattle, he allowed just two runs on two hits in 7 1/3 innings, with one walk and eight strikeouts, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. He's 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four career appearances against the Mariners, with three starts. Miller, a rookie who will be facing the Royals for the first time, pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball last Friday in a 2-0 victory at Houston. |

Chargers +7.5 v. 49ers | Top | 23-12 |
Win | 100 | 35 h 30 m | Show |
The 49ers are planning to play all of their starters in the preseason finale versus the Chargers. Typically, the third game of the preseason throughout the history of the NFL has always been viewed as the "dress rehearsal" game. It acts as a light warmup to the regular season as opposed to just throwing the starters into the deep end from the jump. But a team that is as established as the 49ers arguably doesn't need that. Playing all of the starters is a real gamble due to potential injuries, but that is something Kyle Shanahan isn't overthinking. In fact, he views this as a great benefit to his starters to play in the final preseason game. Still too many points for me |

Patriots v. Titans +2.5 | | 7-23 |
Win | 100 | 33 h 48 m | Show |
The Tennessee Titans are set to close out their preseason on Friday night against the New England Patriots, but how they’re going to approach the game remains up in the air. We know we’ll see the usual suspects, meaning the players who are battling for roster spots. But as far as the starters go, including quarterback Ryan Tannehill, that remains to be seen. When asked about Tannehill, head coach Mike Vrabel said the team had yet to make a decision on if he will play. And he had the same response when asked about quarterback Will Levis, who was unable to suit up in preseason Week 2 due to a lower-body injury. |

Rockies v. Rays -1.5 | Top | 3-5 |
Win | 100 | 4 h 29 m | Show |
The Rays did not announce a Thursday starter, but multiple reports stated right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 1.00 ERA) would serve as the opener of a bullpen game. He has made four starts among his 24 appearances this season and seven in his 227 career outings. Three of his four starts in 2023 consisted of two scoreless innings. In the other start, Armstrong went a season-high three innings and didn't yield a run against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. He pitched one shutout inning in the series opener on Tuesday. Colorado's Peter Lambert will make the start in Florida before the club stays in the AL East and heads to Baltimore for a series beginning Friday. The right-handed Lambert (3-4, 5.02) will be seeking to follow up his last start, an outstanding seven-inning stint in a 14-1 win over the White Sox. |

Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly has looked good this month in a relief role, but he will try to get back on track as a starter on Tuesday when Chicago faces the host Detroit Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game series. Smyly has tossed an inning of scoreless relief in each of his last three appearances. He'll be making his first start since Aug. 7, when he allowed seven runs in five innings against the New York Mets. Smyly (9-8, 4.92 ERA) began his career with Detroit. In three career starts against the Tigers, he is 0-2 with a 5.50 ERA. Smyly will be opposed by rookie right-hander Reese Olson (2-5, 4.83) on Tuesday. In his most recent outing last Wednesday, Olson lasted just 2 2/3 innings while giving up four runs and eight hits to Minnesota. |

Ravens -1 v. Commanders | Top | 28-29 |
Loss | -110 | 30 h 27 m | Show |
The Baltimore Ravens play the Washington Commanders on Monday night in the second of their three preseason games. The Ravens have a chance to extend their 24-game winning streak in the preseason dating back to 2016. After a couple of lively joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday this week, this matchup is highlighted a deeper look at preseason standouts and the offense under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Quarterback Tyler Huntley looks to continue his brilliance in preseason Week 1. The fourth-year quarterback was 8-of-11 for 88 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tylan Wallace in the Ravens' win. Baltimore first-round receiver Zay Flowers has been tormenting his teammates in training camp and against the Commanders in joint practices. Keep an eye on the rookie on Monday night as he is slated to have a large role in Baltimore's new offense. Flowers' debut in Week 1 did not jump off the page, playing only eight snaps without a catch ... However, he impressed off the ball. |

Cardinals v. Pirates +1.5 | Top | 1-11 |
Win | 100 | 7 h 16 m | Show |
The Pirates will look to get their offense going on Monday against left-hander Drew Rom, who is expected to be summoned from Triple-A Memphis to make his major league debut. Rom was the primary pitching prospect acquired from Baltimore in an Aug. 1 trade deadline deal that sent right-hander Jack Flaherty to the Orioles. In two starts at Memphis, Rom recorded a pair of victories, allowing just two runs (one earned) in 11 innings -- good for an 0.82 ERA. He also made 19 appearances (18 starts) for Triple-A Norfolk this season while in the Orioles' organization. During his time there, Rom went 7-6 with a 5.34 ERA. |

Cubs -1.5 v. Tigers | Top | 7-6 |
Loss | -100 | 7 h 59 m | Show |
Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo (2-4, 5.16 ERA) will start the series opener. His WHIP (0.99) is a lot more impressive than his ERA, thanks to his last three outings. He has had a pair of scoreless, one-hit performances, first against San Diego over six innings on July 23 and most recently in a five-inning stint against the Twins on Tuesday. Former reliever Javier Assad (2-2, 3.11), Faedo's mound opponent, has posted two quality starts this month. He held Toronto to one run and four hits in seven innings on Aug. 11. In his last outing on Wednesday, the Cubs right-hander gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox. |

Saints -3.5 v. Chargers | Top | 22-17 |
Win | 100 | 29 h 8 m | Show |
On Friday in a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, the Chargers’ ground game looked improved. This was the positive on a day when Justin Herbert and the passing attack struggled to make any bold statements. Only two teams — Tampa Bay and Houston — rushed for fewer yards last season than the Chargers. They averaged 89.6 yards per game, which was fewer than Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry. In their first preseason game, the Chargers amassed 214 rushing yards against the Rams but that was behind mostly reserves along the offensive line and without Ekeler suiting up. I think the Chargers will take a step back this week with this being a somewhat dress rehearsal if the game is played at all. |

Browns +4 v. Eagles | Top | 18-18 |
Win | 100 | 7 h 58 m | Show |
Dorian Thompson-Robinson has put in two strong performances so far. While no amount of preseason heroics will displace Deshaun Watson, the rookie's trajectory is worth watching on two levels. First, backup quarterbacks do matter; it's easy to write them off, but you don't want to be without a reliable No. 2 option when the starter goes down. If Thompson-Robinson can continue to prove himself, he might enter the season as the Browns' secondary signal-caller. Beyond that, preseason can be an opportunity for a player to put himself in the shop window. Even if he doesn't show enough to secure the Browns' backup job, DTR could show enough to earn a job with another organization. You never know who's watching a performance, and when that scout or executive will come calling. |

Rays v. Giants +1.5 | | 0-7 |
Win | 100 | 9 h 55 m | Show |
Expect a plethora of Giants relievers for the second straight game in another bullpen night, led by right-hander Jakob Junis, Meckler figures to get his initial cracks at a pitcher with whom many other Giants are very familiar -- right-hander Zack Littell (2-3, 4.10 ERA). The 27-year-old went 7-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 102 games, including two starts, for the Giants over the previous two seasons. He signed as a free agent with the Texas Rangers in February, was purchased by the Boston Red Sox in May, and then was claimed off waivers by the Rays a week later. He has made 50 appearances at Oracle Park in his six-year career, but never as a Giants opponent. After coming out of the bullpen in 11 of his first 14 appearances for the Rays, Littell has made three straight starts, going 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA over that stretch. The loss came in his most recent start, a 5-2 defeat against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, when he allowed three runs in a season-high-tying six innings. That Giants announced late Monday night that Junis (3-3, 4.36 ERA) would make the start on Tuesday. It will be just his second start in 32 appearances this season. In the first one, on July 31, he pitched three shutout innings against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks in a game the Giants eventually lost 4-3 in 11 innings. Junis has made seven appearances, including five starts, against the Rays, all while he was with the Kansas City Royals. He is 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA against Tampa Bay. |

On offense, the progress of the Chiefs' young wide receivers is far and away the most intriguing element. With Kadarius Toney out, it remains to be seen how much starters such as Skyy Moore and potentially Marquez Valdes-Scantling will play. There's a clear drop-off after that, though, which could lead to the likes of rookie Rashee Rice, second-year wideout Justyn Ross, and veteran Richie James getting plenty of snaps. Kansas City's receiver room is loaded with youth, and the preseason presents an opportunity for everyone to shine. |

Lopez was effective in his most recent start, against the Tigers on Monday, as he gave up five hits and no runs in seven innings. The Mets will counter with rookie right-hander Denyi Reyes (0-1, 6.14) in the opener and veteran left-hander Jose Quintana (0-3, 3.42) in the nightcap. Loss | -165 | 7 h 16 m | Show |
In the opener, Cincinnati left-hander Andrew Abbott (6-3, 2.93 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Johan Oviedo (6-11, 4.18). Abbott, who has not faced the Pirates, will be making his 12th major-league start in a strong rookie season. On Saturday against Washington, Abbott had one of his biggest hiccups. He took his first loss since July 15, allowing six runs, nine hits and a career-high five walks in 5 2/3 innings. Oviedo is on a roll. He is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA over his past three games, all quality starts. He also has been a boon to the bullpen - he has reached seven innings six times. That includes his last time out when he pitched seven shutout innings Sunday in a win at Milwaukee. |

Vikings +4.5 v. Seahawks | | 13-24 |
Loss | -110 | 33 h 10 m | Show |
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made his stance on playing starters in preseason known right away when he didn’t let guys like Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson see a single snap of action last year. The same should be expected when the Vikings head to Seattle for their first preseason matchup of 2023. That should give rookies and young guys on the bubble plenty of opportunity to showcase their talents. Even without starters playing, there should still be plenty of storylines to pay attention to in the Vikings' preseason opener, including an intriguing rookie quarterback Jaren Hall's debut. |

Cardinals v. Rays -1.5 | Top | 2-4 |
Win | 125 | 15 h 1 m | Show |
Both teams were off on Monday, and on Tuesday, St. Louis sends Miles Mikolas (6-7, 4.29 ERA) to the mound, while Tampa Bay counters with Zach Eflin (12-6, 3.46). Mikolas was lined up to start on Sunday, but instead opted to drop his appeal on a five-game suspension levied by MLB after the right-hander intentionally plunked Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ with a pitch. With Mikolas not getting the starting nod against Colorado, the Cardinals used left-hander Zack Thompson (2-4) as an opener. Four relievers were used to close out the one-run loss, which made Monday's day off more beneficial to rest some arms. Mikolas is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in two career starts against Tampa Bay. In 14 innings, the veteran has yielded four home runs. Eflin is 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA in three starts (18 1/3 innings) against the Cardinals. At home, Eflin has been especially effective this season, posting a 10-2 record with a 2.60 ERA. However, in his last outing at Tropicana Field, the 29-year-old gave up five runs in four innings in a loss to the Miami Marlins on July 26. But in Eflin's last start, on the road at the New York Yankees, the right-hander tossed six shutout innings in a win. |

Like the Jets, the Browns went 7-10 last year and are hoping to be a player in the AFC playoff race this season. This will be the first full season in Cleveland for Deshaun Watson, who split his six starts last season while completing just 58.2 percent of his throws in those games. Watson will again lean on the running of Nick Chubb, a Pro Bowler each of the last four years. Last year, Chubb ran for a career-high 1,525 yards that included 12 touchdown runs and a 5 yards-per-carry average. Thursday night will be Browns fans' first look at rookie Cedric Tillman, a third-round pick who caught 64 passes for 1,081 yards and 12 touchdowns during his final season at Tennessee. Also making his NFL debut for Cleveland is quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick who threw for 3,154 yards and 27 touchdowns last fall while guiding UCLA to a 9-4 record. |

Right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his first start for the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon as they try to clinch their four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Baltimore obtained Flaherty before the trade deadline Tuesday from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for three prospects. The Orioles wanted his experience and innings-eating capability down the stretch to bolster a young staff as they try to hold on to first place in the American League East. Toronto's starter on Thursday will be right-hander Kevin Gausman (8-5, 3.10 ERA). Gausman pitched the first five-plus seasons of his 11-year career for the Orioles. In three career starts against them, he is 1-1 with a 4.76. Gausman threw eight innings of two-run ball against Baltimore in a no-decision on May 21. |

Ryan (9-7, 4.06 ERA) hopes to start that process Wednesday night when the Twins face the Cardinals in the middle contest of a three-game series in St. Louis. The Twins recorded a 3-2 win in the series opener on Tuesday night. In his last four starts, Ryan has allowed 16 runs on 24 hits and eight walks in 19 1/3 innings. He didn't make it out of the fourth inning in his last start on Wednesday, an 8-7 loss at home to the Seattle Mariners. Ryan threw 95 pitches to get 11 outs in that game. He struck out seven but allowed seven hits (including two homers) and walked two batters. |

Right-hander Lucas Giolito is set to make his Los Angeles Angels debut on Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the host Toronto Blue Jays. The Angels acquired Giolito and right-handed reliever Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for two prospects. Giolito is 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 21 starts this season. His 131 strikeouts rank 10th in the American League, and he has limited opponents to a .211 average in his past nine starts. Giolito spent 6 1/2 seasons in Chicago's rotation, winning 59 games. He was an All-Star selection in 2019, and threw a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 25, 2020. He is 2-2 with a 5.45 ERA in seven career starts against Toronto. Kevin Gausman (7-5, 3.18 ERA) is slated to start for the Blue Jays on Friday.
